  1. There are just about as many good restaurants in Southern Maryland as there are in Alexandria. The Westlawn Inn and Chef John Kozic have the finest offerings in Sothn Md (North Beach) and easily hold their own against many restaurants that are considered to be exceptional in Washington DC. There are other holes in the wall that are often hit or miss. Many locals like the Dry Dock in Solomon"s. Try Chapelier's for oyster stew and The Half Way house for fried chicken. The people there are very nice though and it should be fun popping around trying to find something you like. There is a nice artists studio called Dragon Flies in Lexington Park that carries American Art from around the country and just a few local artists. The St mary's Stuffed Ham is punishing. Often available during the holidays, check McKays. Have fun.
  2. I was back again; the tuna was delicious and preppared to perfection, the lamb was also wonderful with beautiful raviolini. The main courses were paired elegantly with all the right "go withs" to make for a very well thought out menu. It is painfully close to Alexandria too.
  3. WELCOME TO DC. I HAD A GREAT DINNER AT CORDUROY TUES NIGHT BEFORE GOING TO SEE PORGY AND BESS. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR QUEST. CV
  4. touche, smalll plates and tasting menus are so over played especially here in washington
  5. via veneto is a hole in the wall and you have to be careful but the pastas are light and very good,
  6. I love fresh past and really enjoy The paparadelle at Tosca, they typaically do it with wild boar. Dario leo used to do a fabulous chocolate tagliatelle with rabbit raguat Goldoni's but it slipped off the menuwhen he left for Georgia. Another hole in the wall favorite of mine is the fresh past at the Via Veneto in Hooin Hall area of Mt Vernon, their fresh pastas are light as a feather! I am interested in other peoples experiences with frersh pasta and great authentic italian sauces. Thanks
  7. la bergerie i hear has a new chef and new owner as of about a year ago. the locals i know still enjoy it as they do le refuge which is really very good and very cramped. le gaulois is not a favorite of mine. jean claude at le refuge is an excellent chef and it is fun there when someone has a birthday and they play the old edith piaf tape singing happy birthday! now the citty council has allowed cafe seating on the sidewalks which has made it more delightful to dine in old town. there is a current controversy brewing regarding clients bringing their doggies to relax at the outdoor cafes. welcome to the peoples republic of old town.
  8. this rest had it's up and down (just one) was apparently tied to sous chef stevie fela who left for 8-10 months and then returned. i have not been there in 10 mos or so but understand it is still excellent
  9. the ghosts of the old wayfarers restaurant can finally rest. restaurant eeve is the best thing that has happened to old town since the fishmarket closed. the most warming and wonderful thing is the family type relationships that the staff radiates with regard to the owners and their offerings. the food is prepared with pride and seems effortless to the diligent chefs. one cant help but catch them stepping back to apraise their creations. the bouliabase is unbelievable and the careful attention to detail is charming particularly in old town. the bar staff should not be ignored either, they make the very best old fashion in the north east and take drink making seriously. they are not missing a trick and look like they are enjoying it. i love it for lunch too.
  10. the burger a fireflies in del ray, alexandria rocks! i will try palena's burger soon and report back
  11. The very very best and authentic Crab Cake in Baltimore is at Faidley's in Lexinton Market. It is still family owned and the reciepe has not changed in 90 years. Don't miss meeting the family there when you go, the whole market is an experience!
  12. Being from Calvert County I had a chance to return and sample John Kozic's delicacies. John is Cordon Blue Trained and he prepared an excellent fare for us that rivaled any of Washington's finer restaurants. I was curious if anyone else had ventuered that way and what hteir experience was?
  13. THe Blue and White on Wythe and Henry in "Old Town" is over 60 years old and still owned by the same family. THey serve soul food and have a line out the door that rivals the Cheesecake Factory
  14. try PHO SO 1 on Spring Mountain past the Vegas version of China Town, order the barbeque beef and shrimp at the table. you will not be disappointed and it sure beats the usual Vegas Hype on copies.
  15. The Blue and White on Wythe and Henry in "Old Town" has been there for over 60 years and has been in the same family, as has Hovermales in Oxon Hill. The blue and White is likely the best soul food shack in the area and boast lines longer than the Cheesecake factory-with far superior food and service. Hovermales soft serve ice cream reciepe changed about 20 years ago when the children took over from the parents, it's no longer worth the trip.
