  1. I just want to point out that Gawker piece was written by Drew Magary, who usually writes on Deadspin. Over there he ain't bad at what he does, but he's out of his element on this one (and Gawker in general - he should stick to the dick jokes on the sports site). Bloggers ranting against print journalists is the new journalists telling bloggers to get out of their parent's basement - short sighted and completely missing the ways both groups can raise each other up.
  2. Thank you Sheldman. Great post. For as much as I said before that this wasn't worth the time discussing, I'm glad I took the time to do so.
  3. To be fair, it appears the F&W article has been (properly?) edited to reflect it being a list of "Best New BBQ". If I'm a betting man I'd place this one in the lap of the editor, who thought it would make a bigger splash with a more booming title. Where is Standard's press release Also: not including Podnahs in PDX makes this a joke even after the goalposts were moved.
  4. Frankly it is responses like yours right here that made me ask the question in the first place. Is there something in your opinion that the Fojol Brothers could do to make this particular situation right, or is your ideal endgame to just rant at anyone that doesn't share your view on this? You're doing a lot of the latter, and little of the former.
  5. People that are up in arms about this: what IS your ideal endgame here? Just an apology? No more costumes? Do you want them to completely rebrand? Change the cuisine served? Close up shop and leave town?
  6. So does this mean we're at the backlash to the backlash at this point? Or the backlash to the backlash to the backlash, because while this is interesting to read I can no longer keep up. Apparently the blame can now be placed at the feet of (1) my generation, (2) white people in general, (3) American culture, (4) television, (5) Matt Groening in particular, (6) Obama. (ok maybe not the last one. at least not yet. BUT WHAT IS HE HIDING EATING A SUB AT TAYLOR YOU GUYS) Adding to the pile of 'well are you offended by _________' questions that this thread has turned into - if people have such an issue with these 'Gen-Y kids playing dress up' are you similarly offended by the women at Little Serow telling the press how they will be wearing the dresses they purchased in Thailand? Or are the Fojols just an easier target because their product isn't taken seriously and come on guys it's just a food truck. I am with Dan on this one. Those who aren't afraid to take the lead of being outraged at random things are wasting a lot of capital on this one... I sincerely hope the next race-related issue that pops up in our media cycle is similarly trivial because it's not hard to imagine the media sweeping it away faster because we've now had 2 weeks of think pieces on The Impact of Fake Moustaches On Our Post-Racial Mobile Quick-Serve Society.
  7. I really wasn't trying to be flip what I typed this before, but putting a microscope on Fojol is news-worthy now because the media decided "Hipster Racism" is a story two weeks ago and it is turning out to have some legs. It is a story that in damn near any incarnation is guaranteed for massive online discussion and page clicks right now... because people don't like 'hipsters', people don't like racism, and people bristle at any suggestion that they might support either thing.
  8. Personally I always thought the Fojols were trying to portray themselves as UK-style gypsies more than anything else, but I never thought too hard about it. It doesn't sound like much of anyone was thinking too hard about it until all the think pieces criticizing the HBO show "Girls" started being churned out. That's fine, I guess, but for the fact that the Fojol's have been on the streets for like three years now, right? Where was the deep offense from this American U student before? Or anyone else? Or did everyone just need the argument spelled out for them. The blogosphere wants to create a new 'hipster racism' meme and it didn't take too long for someone (who, tellingly, is directly in the wheelhouse demographic of that original discussion) to turn it on something local. So... great? Now there are follow up pieces? Is it equally offensive that they sell Thai and Ethiopian food from trucks with costumes and fake moustaches too - or just the Indian food because that fits the argument better? I'm not saying there can't be value in discussing the racial implications of fake moustaches on a food truck (and hell, my post history shows I'm not above trite discussion). I'm just saying there are probably better ways for one to spend their time than going down this rabbit hole.
  9. Are they updating what is for sale/in stock anywhere online? The Brand website and Facebook page don't seem to be doing it. If I'm going to brave Georgetown while they're still finding their footing I'd kind of like to know what's in the cooler case. OK I just want to know if he's selling the boudin daily.
  10. Wow - looks like we all hit up Urban Taco last weekend. I was there earlier though so I got breakfast tacos, which were really quite good for quick service. It almost made being in Terminal C ok. Even better was the meal I had in Terminal B of San Antonio on my way home when my flight was delayed. There is an outpost of Rosario's, a downtown spot that has cracked the Texas Monthly list of best tacos in Texas. This airport branch served me a plate of tacos and side of salsa that whoops on anything I've had in the district by a mile. If you're there and hungry, don't hesitate - what I tasted on my plate and my friends was as good as what I've sampled at the actual restaurant. DFW SAT
  11. I'd say it depends on where you're staying and how flexible you are with weather/distance. It's not a huge city but things are as spread out in pockets more than DC - plus public transport is limited to buses. If you're cool with walking a decent bit and build a plan around staying put for a spell at one of Downtown/Pike-Pine/Fremont/Ballard you'll be ok with a few cabs. Otherwise a car is pretty much a necessity. No kidding on Paseo - just re-reading that comment got a Pavlovian reaction from me and I haven't had one in a few years.
  12. Don't miss Pike Place Market. It's uniquely Seattle, is a great stroll, and you'll find plenty of things to eat just walking and nibbling (or you can grab lunch at the awesome Steelhead Diner - Matt's in the Market has always been uneven for me but a great spot for a drink). Of the places you listed if you're looking to spend I'd go with Poppy or Crush - Elemental can be hit/miss, and while Rover's is great this area isn't exactly lacking for splashy French cooking. Honestly, if you're not hung up on that list I'd honestly look into a few other options. Canlis is doing amazing work lately with their new chef, Sitka and Spruce is still about as Seattle-post-dotcom-boom a dining experience as it gets, Revel has the kind of modern Korean plates and hip location that would absolutely murder in DC. Same with Staple/Fancy and Walrus/Carpenter, which are what I tried to lie/convince myself Pearl Dive would be like. Quinn's though - Quinn's is great for a pint and a sandwich. What the northwest has that DC doesn't are those mid-range priced places that still leave you feeling like you ate like a king. You really don't need the Rover's/Canlis price - you'll eat super well at those places, but it ain't necessary. Get to Paseo and eat a roast pork sandwich. Thank me later.
  13. I don't see where this point of press hounding is going for Andres. Is he trying to hint that he wants to open up branded kiosks selling healthy food at stadiums? Awesome, and a great example of putting money behind your beliefs. If not, then how many more healthy options would he like to see? DC stadiums have a smattering of healthy options. Just like at his restaurants. Actually I'd wager that Nationals Park is above the curve in that regard. I go to a few games a year and it's with friends and to have a good time - just like when I go to a restaurant. I can cook the healthy stuff at home.
  14. Heard some disturbing news about the in-house cheese program that was launched with significant fanfare several months back. Word is they might have had to scrap the entire project. Anyone able to officially confirm?
  15. I am jealous of every aspect of this except what a visit to the Benton's Smokehouse does to your clothes. If you have dogs they are going to love the shirt you were wearing.
  16. Homemade tagliatelle. Sauce made from rendering some Benton's prosciutto and then sauteeing some chopped fresh asparagus in the prosciutto fat, some added smoked bacon fat, and a pat of butter. Added the pasta to that mix along with a ladle of pasta water and parm to bring it together. Laughing Dog Devil Dog IPA.
  17. Aweome story today by WaPo on this phenomenon. Everyone caught up in the buzz/hype on this story should check this out for another perspective.
  18. Don, have you been hitting up the London KFC knockoffs again?
  19. No word on this place? It was on Kliman's short list a month or so ago but feedback/reviews other than that have been few and far between. What I've heard from friends has been very good but I know the bar isn't exactly high when it comes to Mexican food in DC. Anyone been?
  20. I am in full on cold-brew mode now, probably until the fall. If anyone has recommendations on beans for this I'd love to hear. This week I've been using Intelligensia La Union, which is pretty damn good but also seems kind of like overkill.
  21. I'd like there to be a Part 3, where they try to calmy explain to people that even if their $40 Kobe Burger came from the most impeccably marbled beef on the freaking planet, once you grind it up it's irrelevant.
  22. Risotto with ramps and staichowski hot italian sausage Arugula salad with balsamic dijon and crispy shallots Fresca
