  1. THIS. A thousand times this. If I read one more review criticizing Hill Country for their pork, or Pork Barrel for their brisket, or either place for their sides, I'm going to finally have to secure the domain www.stuffwhiteyankeepeoplelike.com
  2. Think we're going to stick to McCrady's for the more elaborate meal (like what Brock did in his Capitol Grill days), but I think FIG needs to happen. Thanks!
  3. And the 'fiasco guy' is now moving on to turning the long dormant Hoagie House into some sort of cafe. A cafe that will surely never sniff a liqour license no doubt. [No separate thread for this, right? I can't bring myself to do it.]
  4. This was pretty much all you had to say on the state of hospital food.
  5. Going in late February for our anniversay - have a reservation to McCradys but nothing else set in stone. Thinking Sunday brunch at Husk but willing to alter that plan in search of the best fried chicken in the city. Anyone have any leads/ideas/secrets?
  6. Saturday night with a Saints game going on, and they were out of Abita jumbo bottles, crawfish (!), oysters (!!!), and steak (!!!!!!!!!) at 5pm. Service was indifferent to surly, and when the check for $50 was handed back with $40 cash and one credit card, the server took the initiative to not ask, run the card for the entire tab, and assume he was left a $40 tip. Sure we probably should have specified, but it was pretty presumptious on his part. Food wise, we had some awesome roasted (grilled?) wings. Honestly, some of the best I've had in DC. The shrimp po boys were laughable though. It was a dozen 31-40s on a foot long roll, which meant you ended up with multiple bites of Leidenheimer roll that had zero protein. Oh, and grilled shrimp, not fried - but that isn't specified on the menu. The deservedly lauded boudin is no longer on the menu. I don't know what is going on here, but it is not good.
  7. I had a shockingly good bbq brisket plate from Cousin's BBQ in DFW terminal B a few years ago. BBQ in the district has come a long way in the past few years, but if it's something you're into it was a really good plate of food, airport or not. DFW
  8. $10 for $20 at SUNdeVICH - link I'll keep buying these because I live right by them, but it really is pretty good.
  9. Easy potshot to take, but if the cooking at any of the JA joints was hitting the heights that the flagship Emeril's has had under David Slater the last few years this question wouldn't even be being brought up. As for Oyamel, when I think of it as a place to grab some (admittedly PQ priced) tacos and solid cocktails, it's still better than your average spot near Verizon. I truly do like that bar under those expectations, but I'd imagine the goal is for it to be something other than an upscale spot for a Caps pregame.
  10. Co-signing on this plate, especially the tongue. When I had it this weekend we were told it was 'tongue pastrami'. Damn near perfect with a little of the whole grain mustard.
  11. Went for lunch yesterday. Fried chicken is NOT available at lunch, sadly. However there are fried chicken sandwiches available in southern style and spicy varieties (Chick-fil-Ray's?). I audibled to the oyster po-boy and was very happy, especially since it was dressed with crawfish in a remoulade sauce... Did not expect that but was pleasantly surprised to see some massive crawfish tails in the sandwich. The girlfriend had a burger, and we were both discussing afterwards that the griddled patties were better than the grilled ones across the street. Both are great, but just a personal preference. If you haven't had the onion fries, get them. They're an unholy offspring of the Bloomin' Onion.
  12. While the archives might want it for something else down the road, the Archives exhibit is all about the government's influence and effect on American appetites. It concerns home cooking, not dining out. There isn't anything in there at this time that would be particularly appropriate for menus. They sound awesome though, and I bet you could roll out most of that old K-Pauls one now and still pack em in.
  13. If uniformity is what you're looking for, I'd probably go to Popeye's.
  14. Stopped in for a quick dinner Sunday night. I'll co-sign on the steak - very good flavor and tender for fast casual. GF had the meatballs and they had good flavor but were a little dry. Both the eggplant and red curry I had on my bowl were pretty tasty. We got two big bowls of food for $15. Someone in front of me got a banh mi and it looked... small for the price. Shophouse is difficult to properly judge because the shadow of Chipotle looms large and this concept is one that, in 2011, feels more traveled. In almost every city you can find good, quality food with these flavors for around the same price point. The food here is good, and they'll certainly be successful in this location and in DC in particular, which isn't exactly overflowing with great Asian-ish options. It grades high for a single location but if I'm supposed to be looking at it with a "will this conquer the world the same way Chipotle did" scale, it's hard to think that will be the end result in the current setup.
  15. No luck at the Potomac Ave, Constitution Square, and Columbia MD locations.
  16. Ranch Style Beans used to be available at Harris Teeter. In fact, the ConAgra store locator says they still are. After visiting three locatins and calling a few others, I can tell you they don't seem to be at any DC area Teeter. My phone call to a Sav A Lot brought a similar shrug. So if the ConAgra website is a bust, I'm throwing out a hail mary to the DR board - anyone seen Ranch Style Beans for sale in the area? I need them in a few days so I can't order online...
  17. $15 for 2 sandwiches, 2 drinks, and 1 side at SunDeVich
  18. Located on the edge of the food court in Seattle-Tacoma International, the Ivar's stand only does breakfast sandwiches until 10:30. If you're lucky enough to be flying early, don't think twice about stopping for the dungeness crab, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich. It is decadent. SEA
  19. This is great advice. Hot water and power look like they're going to be the primary issues here now. But the storm still looks nasty as hell. I'm torn on how well DC residents are prepping. On one hand I'm still slightly traumatized from my trip to the City Vista Safeway yesterday. On the other hand, Irene let my gf and I walk into Beck at 6:30 on a Friday night and have our choice of seats at the bar.
  20. I can't lie - I clicked on this event in hopes this was involved
  21. $15 for $30 (lunch) or $20 for $40 (dinner) at Thai Curry
  22. Don, just this week a large group of quasi-strangers had the opportunity to experience a $20 meal that turned into essentially a menu tasting and 'ask the chefs session'. It was proposed by the restaurant unprovoked on this site, and responses from across the DC area came in. Then we all got together. None of that would have happened without this site. The news, reviews, and inside information that comes through here is more than enough. But there is an added sense of community and respect across the industry that you've built here that is truly remarkable. So thank you.
