  1. Of the buckets and buckets of mussels I've had at Beck, there was one time I had a similarly off bowl at the bar. I didn't mention it that evening due to similar late night/busy bar concerns but I did send an email to the address on the website. Never heard anything back. It hasn't stopped me from continuing to eat there - every restaurant can have off nights.
  2. I heard that this was the original promo ad for Good Stuff.
  3. To be fair, he's tried pairing backhanded compliments with the 'up and coming' moniker before as well.
  4. I read the comments here and was getting ready to draft some kind of response about how he was at least raising the (admittedly low) bar on the hill, and that without Good Stuff and We The Pizza there might not be places like Ba Bay opening, and then I read this: Fuck. You. No they don't. They look like H Street and U Street. They don't want to look like Brooklyn, We don't want them to look like Brooklyn. And they're not going to look like Brooklyn. Nothing annoys me more than an expat New Yorker who can't look at anything without comparing it to something in the bouroughs, which must be superior because... hey, look where it is on the map! Spike, if I want to see things that look like cheap knock-offs of NYC, I'll look at both your menus, which are directly cribbed from superior establishements such as Shake Shack, Artichoke, and Stand. In the meantime, you'd do well to tuck your stupid hat a little lower and keep your mouth shut for a while.
  5. Really fun event and if they make it an annual thing they have another space they could probably double the size of attendees next year. People seemed to be having a very good time, all you can eat plus a cocktail or giant beer for $20 will do that (honestly they could probably double the entrance fee). My favorites were Lyon Hall/Liberty Tavern and PS7. I thought Red Apron's stack was a way to get product out quickly, but I didn't think the three sausages really came together. It was interesting to see how some places like Red Apron and BLT Steak served what was essentially a small bite, while places like Lyon Hall/Liberty Tavern, PS7, and Urbana served essentially an entire sandwich. I don't know how the judges could really consider all of those on the same playing field, but whatever. Pics here - and probably half the food blogs in the area.
  6. Sadly had a similar experience with the IPA. Wanted to love it but found it a little funky smelling, too bitter, and not hoppy enough. Looking forward to trying the other beers when I see them around but I don't think I'll be going back to the IPA.
  7. I'll third the XO edamame This is almost worthy of its own thread - the "If You Must" list of dishes for when you get dragged someplace
  8. Yes, it's pricy. Yes, the ticket thing is silly. But considering the options before Hill Country opened were to (a) bitch about the lack of bbq in the district or ( eat mediocre (and often just as overpriced) pulled pork sandwiches, I'm of the opinion that we're better off having them here. At $22/lb I won't be a regular, but there's brisket to be had in DC that wouldn't be laughed out of Texas now. That saves me money simply by putting off a plane ticket.
  9. I give them credit for admitting the beer selection needs improvement. The chips I tried were good, but I'm going to wait to come back until the taps have been upgraded to do a proper meal there.
  10. The fact that DC proper doesn't have a classic shop option kills me. Sorry, but I don't want table service and The Brunch Experience to get my hands on a good apple fritter or chocolate covered cream filled (aka Bismarcks aka Berliners). I want to eat my massive box of fried dough in my car in shame like a normal human being. Krispy Kreme is pretty mediocre besides the plain glazed and Dunkin, in my experiences, has even worse (you call that an apple fritter???). Maybe we should all start a 'donuts are the new cupcakes' meme and a shop will open up on H?
  11. Just to clarify - they were only $1 yesterday as part of a media blitz to bring attention to the service (and it would appear they did a damn good job at it). That being said, as I understand it all the businesses that took part yesterday agreed to deals with LS to continue offering Instant Deals over a period of time. The idea is that you check the website or phone ap when you're about to grab a bite or a drink, see that a place is offering you $5-10 off, and steer yourself in that direction. Will these deals steer me to places I'd otherwise never go to? Of course not - sorry McFaddens. But seeing how they've brought in places like Ba Bay, Cajun Experience, Blacksalt, and Vinoteca, I can see being swayed to go back to places I already like and have neglected, or places I have heard good things about but haven't gotten around to visiting. And yesterday I was pretty much their ideal user - I got a $1 lunch at Merzi and was pleasantly surprised with the lamb rice bowl. I'd been curious to check out the place and will now definitely go back if I need a bite during the lunch hour or for a quick bite before something at Verizon. So thank you Merzi.
  12. Funny, my impromptu date night last week saw us getting a small charcuterie plate that had an awesome pot of rabbit rillettes but no white bean spread. The group next to us had the Flintstonian large plate, which looked to have at least one other type of meat and an additional pot of... something? Maybe they gave us the wrong pot and we lucked out. Regardless, we were both full before the mussels even showed up. That thing is a steal.
  13. Sounds like fun - I just didn't know American Ice was actually serving something close enough to be called BBQ now. Good pickles there, but the meat I've been served has been mediocre at best. And frankly, serving misc shredded and pulled meats is great for a bar menu, but unless you're knocking everything out of the park it's pretty tough to seriously compare with what's going on at a place like Hill Country. Even in the BBQ wasteland of DC.
  14. So some friends and I went in on the chicken bucket for lunch - and it is essentially 3 takeout orders of the fried chicken entree. Boneless breast, bone-in thigh, pile of mash, and mustard sauce. For $30, it's a steal and the only thing you don't get from takeout is a seat and a plate. That being said, we all agreed that some sort of bread item would have been a nice inclusion. Since there's no biscuits to be had, next time it'll have to be chicken-and-gougères.
  15. I'm sure removal of alternative bbq options was part of the deal to bring in Blue Smoke. As for the "Xtreme Dawgs", from the always awesome Let Teddy Win: Yay? I just hope for items that Xtreme they have a tap fountain that only pours Mountain Dew, Surge, and Red Bull.
  16. I thought I would love this but found it to be too... seawatery? My date found it tolerable but I found it just on the good side of inedible. Now, if they have the poppy seed ice cream when you visit - good lord. That one blew my mind. Love the variety of dessert selection there though.
  17. I'm pretty sure his MO is to do come on in the capacity of 'consultant' or 'culinary director' and then depart after a year or so. EDIT: Wow. This makes him look like Peter Chang on liquid nitrogen. While I agree there might be better burgers in Atlanta (I haven't tried the famed ones at Holman and Finch or Ann's Snack Bar) and I agree it's a bit of a scene, I absolutely think Flip would make a valuable addition to DC. The meals I've had at the Atlanta location have been inventive and delicious - more of a high end sandwich shop really with kick ass fryer and shake stations. Generally when I want a burger I'm going to this little-known spot over in Arlington, but you better believe I'd go to Flip three times before spending the same price point on the daily quality crapshoot at BGR or the consistent mediocrity at Good Stuff.
  18. I really hope the planned DC Flip is still happening. My two visits there left me really impressed and I think with a good location they could survive the DC Burger Apocalypse that will inevitably happen with all the high end burger shops opening around the city. And yes, there is a foie gras milkshake on the menu.
  19. I've found that their in-house roast turkey and roast beef to be consistently dry - and the turkey has been on the dry side since they opened up shop. I've found the best way to deal with that is to smother it with fresh mozz, proscuitto, and pesto . That being said, I have to (sadly) agree with the chorus that there has been a slippage in consistency and quality. The little things that come with proper sandwich construction such as consistent application of toppings and bread/filling ratio have been off the last few times I've been there. However, while I've cut back on my visits they've hinted on Twitter that an eggplant parm hoagie is in development. If that actually happens I'll come crawling back because eggplant parm is my sandwich kryptonite.
  20. I think this is the biggest, easiest, and most accurate critique of MG - something that is supposed to be a showcase for a chef's creativity and playfulness is often overshadowed by pretentiousness and long-windedness. I'm a fan of MG because I like being challenged as a diner. That being said, if your crazy techniques and 12 hour cooking processes result in something that doesn't actually taste good, I could give a damn. Fact is most of the MG techniques are best eaten but not seen, but many of their biggest advocates can't get over their need to screw with things just to screw with them - and it ends up bringing down the dish as a whole. The steak still needs to match the sizzle, and often that doesn't happen. Too many Marcels, not enough Blaises. (and I'm going to Minibar this week too - maybe this will renew my hope in the concept?)
  21. FWIW, if the pizza quality is similar to Via Tribunali when it first opened this place could be a real contender. VT is fantastic and has branched out into its own little empire in Seattle.
  22. If anyone is looking for an investment opportunity I was just contacted by a friendly Nigerian with ties to the Royal Family. PM me.
  23. While I agree 100% with the critique of Yelpers, it's not hard to look at the Columbia Room page and something that might have inspired this article. To be fair, if my spot was bashed in a lengthy screed on a highly trafficked site by a 24 year old who doles out fawning praise to H Street bars like candy to trick-or-treaters, I'd want to respond too.
  24. Golf clap. Countdown to 1 star reviews of The Passenger in 3... 2... 1...
