  1. I'm fond of the Savoy...upscale dining and damn fine foie gras.
  2. Actually, it's two steps forward, one step back...but who's counting? Or is that one step forward, two steps back?
  3. If you read the original message that the quote came from, you'll see that the OP was talking about Mainland China. You don't get fired in Mainland China (especially if you belong to the party).
  4. When you know that you get paid whether the service is good or bad, why bother with good?
  5. These are from Bruce Buschel's rules for workers at the seafood restaurant he's building. Taken from today's New York Times Small Business section. A small selection from the article. Which ones (if any) do you disagree with? "1. Do not let anyone enter the restaurant without a warm greeting." "5. Tables should be level without anyone asking. Fix it before guests are seated." This is one of my pet peeves. Nothing like having a table rocking and rolling your wine all over the tablecloth. One through fifty today, fifty-one through one hundred next week.
  6. Being a beginner to Korean food myself , I'd suggest that you check your spicy tolerance before you order Soon Doo Boo (spicy Tofu soup). It comes in three heat ranges, spicy, spicier and nuclear. You might also want to try Duk Mandu Guk (soup with mandu and thinly sliced rice cakes and rice noodles). You had Mandu Guk which in the Duk Mandu Guk form is one of my favorites. You should try Duk Mandu Guk at Yechon if you'd like the definitive version. You might also try the soolantang at Gamasot for another soup that is extremely satisfying. Most Korean places don't serve sushi (with a couple of exceptions) as they generally specialize in one or maybe two specific foods. A food crawl through Annandale with someone who's familiar with Korean food is the best way to learn. I'd suggest Grover, but she's out of town until November (only one more week to go 'til she's home..hooray!) but Dean can do a pretty good job for a mee-guk.
  7. Three of us went last year and it was pretty pedestrian. Nothing stood out as anything other than thanksgiving dinner. The year prior, Grover and I went to Vidalia and that was a Thanksgiving dinner. Maybe it was because of the move, maybe the number of people being served or maybe just the menu (let's face it, how inspiring can turkey be?), but not one of the more memorable Corduroy dinners.
  8. I don't know. I don't seem to have a "Fast Reply" box at all...I must have the cheap version...
  9. It's a good thing that Peter Chang is a male...about 90% of the people here would be guilty of stalking. No wonder the guy keeps leaving and running off to some anonymous place ...
  10. This is very easy to find. Straight down Rt 29 south to Charlottesville. The shopping center is on your left as you approach Rio Road (that's RY-o, not Ree-o). About 2 hours from Alexandria and a easy trip.
  11. I believe the "test run" for staff and management was last night. If so, it shouldn't be long now.
  12. There's some truth to that statement. Mandu food while good is somewhat pedestrian when compared to the Annandale restaurants which specialize in one food or another. If you try to be all things to all people, you end up disappointing everyone. If you stick to Mandu's strengths, you're fine. If you go there looking for good Japchae, you might be disappointed. Surprisingly the mandoo isn't bad at Mandu, it's just not as good (or complex if you will) as the mandoo at Gom Ba Woo (or the kimchi either for that matter). This is turning into a discussion more of Mandu the restaurant then mandoo the Korean food and there's already a Mandu forum. Perhaps you might want some information on some of the restaurants that were highlighted in the program.
  13. That shouldn't be much of a surprise. The owner's mother (who is the chef) was born and raised in Seoul. She cooks Seoul style (I'm avoiding the impulse to say Seoul food). At the first bite of the kimchi, Grover said "Seoul" which is why he would like Mandu if he was born and raised in Seoul.
  14. If you need help with Korean food, cuisine, customs, cooking, you can always get in touch with Grover. She's introduced a large number of people on DR to Annandale and Korean food. She's led many Korean food tastings (including food for people who "can't eat spicy food"), so I'm sure she can help you. After reading the Washingtonian article on Korean food, a number of places listed in the article are either owned by different people or changed food specialties or are no longer in business. If you plan on going to any of the listed restaurants, I'd suggest you call ahead first. For starters, you might want to try: Yechon Gom Ba Woo Gamasot To Sok Jip All of these are in Annandale and all will help the novice Korean food eater without compromising true Korean cooking.
  15. Having only eaten in the second floor dining room, my experiences might be somewhat limited, but every time we've eaten there, the food and atmosphere have been great.
  16. Which category would Zeffirelli's fall in this categorization? (oh no, not another new topic)
  17. Better? Nope. Equal...eh...maybe. (and the best kosher food I've ever eaten is on Mount Royal on the hill in Montreal...)
  18. I just returned from 10 days in India...think I can wait a while for more Indian anything...
  19. To say nothing of cigarette smoke, gimme hats and good ole boys...
  20. Thank you, that makes a lot more sense then spending 2 hours typing out all those restaurant names (not like this information isn't put out twice every year)...and just to make it even easier to find a restaurant, here's the web page with all the restaurants listed.
  21. Wait a minute...as a member of the cheap, unflavored masses, I resent that remark...
  22. And now with Village Chicken open at the southern end of the shopping center (4 doors down from Delia's) it's becoming a chicken's worst nightmare .
  23. 90% of the people who post anything on WTOP are either blithering idiots or wingnuts who see a conspiracy in anything and everything. Why should this "poll" be any different?
  24. You should have slipped out for a hot dog.
