Al Dente Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 It always rains on days when I am able to go to the Grill. This understanding can be extended to all things.Anybody going? Wish I could, but it's just too damn far for me. Though I am considering occupying a barstool somewhere tonight.
Gastro888 Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 ...Han Sung in Ellicott City. (A 13-course Chinese banquet and a picnic this weekend required a couple of days of rest before another excursion...) We're thinking of gathering at 7pm. It's located at 3570 St. John's Lane, at Frederick Rd... You MUST try their hwae du bop - raw fish on rice dish. It's like chirashi on acid - oh my god, they make the best one in the area. Fantastic...
JLK Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 I'm having dinner with a friend I haven't seen in a bit and she suggested - what else - Palena. She is craving the chicken. Anyone know if it's open tonight? I read (re: Sorriso) that it was closed last night w/o explanation.
Jacques Gastreaux Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 This is an actual invitation I received by email this morning. I onlyl wish I could attend: Gentlemen—Please find the attached flyer announcing the first ever DU Piscataway Creek dinner. We are having a kick-off event at arguably the most redneck bar left in PG County on Saturday, June 25th. It is a great little watering hole nestled in between a trailer park….it’s perfect! Since this is a new chapter, the cost for a ticket is a modest $40.00. That includes Carolina barbeque, fried chicken, salad, and all the cold beer you can drink. The event will run from 7-10 pm, and then after we will resume the festivities at my place in Accokeek where everyone is welcome to stay over. As with all DU events, we will have alcohol, tobacco and firearms. PLEASE pass the invitation on to as many people as you can. Anyone who you hunt with, or rookies who are just getting into it. If you have any questions, please let me know. If you are going to come, please rsvp to me. I hope you can all make it as this will surely be a good time in an environment about as far away from DC as you can be, but only takes 30 minutes to get there!! Thanks. The question arises whether the bbq is Eastern or Western NC style.
FunnyJohn Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 UMMM! Booze, butts, bullets and barbecue -- I'm bettin' it's Eastern NC
mdt Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 Wish I could, but it's just too damn far for me.Though I am considering occupying a barstool somewhere tonight. Where are you thinking? I will need a drink after work today...
Al Dente Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 Where are you thinking? I will need a drink after work today... I haven't figured it out yet. Maybe Ceiba?
FunnyJohn Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 I haven't figured it out yet. Maybe Ceiba? If you go to Ceiba make sure you try the "Nirvana Nachos"
Jacques Gastreaux Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 Did you get a chance to read this? Or this? I saw the former, not the latter. Thanks
JLK Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 And pork quesadilla. And churros con chocolate. If you go to Ceiba make sure you try the "Nirvana Nachos"
FunnyJohn Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 (edited) So, where we going tomorrow? Don't know, but I'm open to suggestions. Anxious to renew acquaintances with my DR buds -- what's it been 2 or three weeks? Edited May 26, 2005 by FunnyJohn

Mark Slater Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 I hear some oysters calling me from Old Ebbitt Too late! I ate them all last night
Al Dente Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 What's the story? My ol' lady and I might wander around Dupont and grab a bite at a few places-- Komi, Hank's, Sette, Firefly, Royal Palace, etc.
shogun Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Anybody want to hit Circle Bistro or Firefly for HH tonight?
Al Dente Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Depending on which way the wind is blowing when I get to the top of the Dupont Circle escalator, I may head over to FF4HH.
alan7147 Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Went over to FF for happy hour last night. Couple glasses of the reisling, goat cheese salad & seared tuna. Made the rough day at the office better

Made the rough day at the office better I had this tuna dish tonight. A delicious start to my evening. Where is the Firefly thread? I have some notes on a couple of drinks I enjoyed there. And for that matter, where is the Komi thread? I had my first experience there tonight. And where's my corkscrew?
jparrott Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 It's another Wild Grape whoop-de-doo Saturday at Rick's in Alexandria. Come by and taste a few more wines and see why Rich (my biz partner) has been dubbed the "Tornado." And just maybe a beer afterwards?
Barbara Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Just wanted to bump this up. Anybody going to the Grill tomorrow? I have to stoke up because I have to be at a meeting downtown at 4 pm tomorrow and am need of people who care, and want to talk about, food. I may take my favorite fella (Craig) with me, but we would be very glad to say "HI" to any of you.

KeithA Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Anybody want to go to Sonoma for happy hour Friday? Speaking of happy hour - I need recs for some good happy hour eats tonight. I'm usually not available during happy hour but am looking to catch a bite with a friend before going to the Nats game. Any suggestions that are downtown near metro and pretty cheap?
Jacques Gastreaux Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 I plan to head over to the Firefly wine happy hour Thursday evening after work. Any else care to join me?

FunnyJohn Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 I think I'll swing by as well this evening -- so long as it doesn't rain. See y'all there.
JLK Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 I'll be at Old Ebbitt for a coworker's birthday starting around 6:30. If anyone else is there, definitely say hello.
FunnyJohn Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 (edited) Is there a whim du jour? I fed my whim last night at Firefly with a few other Rockwellians. Sampling the delicious white wine (what the hell do you call that grape -- petite Carbou??) that was on offer from Wabeck and also the South African reds that jparrott brought around to try + fried oysters . Tonight I may stop by Harry's in Clarendon or maybe I'll just go home and give my liver a rest Next week.... Edited June 3, 2005 by FunnyJohn

shogun Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 (edited) I suggested hitting Sonoma for today, but I might have to back out (But you guys still go if you want )...have too much to do around here. I might hit the paella festival at Jaleo in an hour or so, though. There is a distinct lack of anything to eat in the house. Edited for clarity: Crystal City Jaleo Edited June 3, 2005 by shogun

If this isn't a case of "a day late and a dollar short", I don't know what is. I was busy putting tonight's dinner together when you posted this. After last night's game (we got home from HH at Firefly and some more comestibles at Bistro du Coin--hey! it's on the way home and we were on foot) we arrived home in time to check into the eighth inning. Got to see the great comeback. WHAT A GAME!!! I would have risked the weather to go tonight. Oh, well. All I can say is, the next time somebody's got tickets they can't use, CALL ME (202-483-1792). Al Dente Posted June 6, 2005 Posted June 6, 2005 I may have up to 3 extra tickets for tomorrow (Tuesday) night's FIRST PLACE Nats game. If anyone is interested in meeting at Eastern Market metro at 6:30 and heading to the game with me, let me know. Price of ticket= 1 beer for me. I have decent seats looking up the 3rd base line from the 3rd row of the upper deck. They're playing Oakland at 7:05. I should know later today exactly what the leftover ticket situation is. I'm waiting to hear if my brother, Derrick Dente, can make it to the game. Apologies in advance should this offer have to be rescinded due to family priorities.
squidsdc Posted June 6, 2005 Posted June 6, 2005 supposed to be going to Palena tonite, if all goes according to plan...

I'm going on a bit of a bachelor party night out Saturday night and we might have to drop in on BdC for our last stop of the evening. What time are they open until?, When do the amateurs go home? Meaghan Posted June 6, 2005 Posted June 6, 2005 (edited) According to the official DR.com calendar, the festivities are this evening: click here. A 5,000 gallon tanker hit a donkey on I-66 this morning and flipped. The driver is reportedly okay, but authorities said most of the unspecified booze spilled onto the roadway and evaporated. What a tragedy! The truck was bound for a delivery on Connecticuit Avenue, but no one was able to confirm where. Edited June 6, 2005 by Meaghan

Al, they are open till 2 am or whenever, but fear not - the festivities thereafter typically migrate next door to Timberlakes where more naughtiness ensues until 3 am or so. And I don't think you get kicked out of BdC. Unless you insist on them cooking the rice you brought with you.

DonRocks Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 I would but I'm heading to Meriweather Post Pavilion tonight. Anyone have any recs near there for snacks and drinks? For future reference, Trattoria e Pizzeria da Enrico in Kings Contrivance Village Center (Guilford Road) is worth the 2-3-mile detour off of Route 29. A divey strip-mall southern Italian place with food better than you'd expect, rumor has it they opened a second location in Dorsey's Search Village Center, and if that's the case, I suspect it won't be as good as the first.
bookluvingbabe Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 Dithering between trying to find parking near Gailo and making my first Grill stop for lunch or sticking with 2 Amy's. Choices, choices... I'm also going to stop at the USDA Farmer's Market if it's not pouring around noon. I figure I need good provisions before I had up to WVA. Jennifer
Nadya Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 If you get takeout from the Grill, you can park illegally at the entrance and quickly nip in and out. That's what I usually do. I'd be all over the Grill today, but stayed up really late over sushi last night...have to detox. Sorry.
