First Ever DonRockwell.com Flea Market

With the kind permission of Rocks, who is graciously allowing me a one-time only exception in making a post like this...

My late mother (may she rest in peace) was a great cook and a fantastic baker but an eccentric collector of kitchen appliances and gadgets, and a stockpilier of oddities. As I go through her estate, I've found more kitchen stuff than I ever dreamed she had. After taking a few things for myself and giving a few more away to relatives, I am left with the following, which are for sale or in some cases, giveaway. Most of this would be perfect for a youngster heading off to college and just starting to collect cooking gear. Most of it is gently used. Some of it is brand-spanking new.

Please do not clutter dr.com with responses to this post - rather, pm me and make an offer if you're interested.

I may arrange for a weekend day where I'm at the house (in Darnestown, MD) for everyone to come by and pick up stuff.

ETA: I'm supposed to split all proceeds from the estate with my brother, but I think he'll understand: 100% of money from the sale of the items below will be donated to Share our Strength. I think Rocks and Hillvalley will confirm that I'm a sucker for charity.

Don, I'll let you know when interested has waned (if it even waxes) so you can remove this thread. And thank you.

If it has a strike-through, it's been claimed!

[Jeez, it isn't that gracious; just doing a favor for a friend. This was a very, very easy exception to make, a no-brainer.]

What about having an "estate" sale one day, so that people can stop by and see the stuff? You might have better luck selling a lot of the baking pans and small miscellany that way, than you will by asking for people to commit sight unseen.

We'll be doing that eventually. At any rate I won't ask anyone to buy before looking. I'll make whatever arrangements are needed.

On second thought... I may just propose a friday night happy hour. I'll bring my truck. I can lock everything in the back, then we can have a tailgate flea market after a few drinks. We just need to think of a reasonably central place, with good drinks and someplace near to park a Silverado 2500.

I think it's a great idea too. Since the money raised will go to charity, perhaps a Church or School would agree to let you use their parking lot?

Right. Know of any located next to a good bar?

Actually I was thinking of the parking lot on Water street, with drinks at Agraria. Assuming the parking lot people won't give me a hard time about selling stuff from my truck.

Any other ideas? Remember, it's a pretty big pickup truck.

There is a "loading zone" right in front of Firefly.

THIS JUST IN:

The First-ever DonRockwell.com (Charity) Flea Market

There is now interest in making this a donrockwell.com event. Seems a few of you would also like to have a kitchen cull, and I have Don's permission to do this. [scott, I'm taking you up on your offer to help organize.]

My idea: meet at a more-or-less central, Metro-accessible parking lot, preferably near a good bar, Friday June 30 late afternoon/early evening or Saturday, July 1. Exchange goods. Drink heavily after. Or maybe before and after.

If this comes to pass I will bring more low-priced stuff than you can imagine, as I didn't even address Mom's multiple sets of cutlery, plates, and glasses. Not to mention some of my own.

I will still donate 100% of my proceeds to Share our Strength. I'll ask other participants to consider donating a share of theirs as well.

Alternate date for me: Saturday July 8. That's the only other free Saturday I have in July.

Alternate location: my house in Potomac (long, treed driveway = perfect for setting up stuff). But it isn't near a Metro and my bar isn't that well-equipped.

Any other ideas on how to organize this, please post here. Thanks!

Brilliant idea!!!!

Call me a Luddite, but if anyone has a spare Mouli-Julienne with a rust-free blade (No. 2?) for fine, fine shredding, please contribute it. I got my first after watching Julia Child years ago and regret discarding the second one after buying a food processor. It was the BEST thing for making a carrot salad...

You're welcome to set it up in my backyard. We're metro accessible.

Heather, I'm sorry but I missed this post earlier! If we can't find a bar for Friday night I'll take you up on the offer for Saturday, okay? I take it you're near the Rockville Metro?

------------------------

One more thing - I will be away and nowhere near a computer from about mid-morning Friday til afternoon Sunday, so if I don't reply to posts or pm-s just hang tight.

For all of you who kept up with the Small Kitchen Appliances for Sale thread, here's the update:

The charity flea market will take place this coming Saturday from 3 to 5 pm in the parking lot at Ray's the Steaks. There will be plenty of room for several of us to set up as vendors out of the backs of our cars and trucks, plenty of parking for shoppers, reasonable Metro access, a nice farmer's market nearby, and Michael has promised to whip up some snacks and drinks. What more can you ask for?

To recap: I am clearing out my mother's kitchen (and mine, too), and in addition to a large number of small appliances not yet claimed, will have many, many dozens of pots, pans, bakeware, casseroles, plates, glasses, utensils, gadgets, gizmos, etc etc etc. I will donate 100% - every last penny - to Share our Strength. Several other people have expressed interest in participating as vendors; I have asked them, but am not requiring them, to consider donating a portion of their proceeds to charity as well. I will take cash or check.

Please consider coming by, either as buyer or vendor. If you've claimed stuff from the other list this would be the perfect time to come get it unless you've made arrangements otherwise.

Great big thanks and hugs and kisses to Danny Boylen of Notti Bianche and Brendan Cox of Circle Bistro, who offered space or services for this event. I truly appreciate your generosity. I'm accepting Michael's offer just because it's the easiest for me logistically.

And thanks to the donrockwell community for being such, well, nifty people. You all rock. I hope to see a lot of you Saturday!

Is there room for a small bake sale?

Why the heck not? Let's have fun with this!

I am hoping to set up a small table with miscellaneous fleas and kitchen wares. Nothing too big or fancy - mostly remainders of my parents' estate. All proceeds (if any there should be) will be donated to the Food Bank of the Whitman Walker Clinic and/or Share our Strength.

Whoo-hoo! Thanks, Crackers.

We will be serving meat treats and thirst-quenching wines. Also, Ray's The Steaks will match any funds raised at the event, 1 for 1.

However, proceeds from the sale of tea cozies shaped like Don Rockwell's head will be used to fund a weekend getaway to a New England B and per se and B for Don and me, where hopefully they will have a nice fire going, lots of wandering paths through the woods, and extra thick comforters.

This sounds like fun. Wish I could attend. I definitely could use the discounted appliances.

If someone is willing to come by the Arlington Courthouse farmers market on Saturday, ShoeBox Oven has baked some champagne chocolate, prussians and a few other pastries for this soiree. Please PM me and let me know if anyone can swing by and pick them up.

For everyone who contacted me to claim particular appliances: please pm me if you will not be able to pick up your stuff Saturday so that I don't lug it along and sell it by mistake. The truck is going to be full to the brim and if I can get your goods to you another time I'd like to know. Thanks!

Are you guys for real doing this in Ray's parking lot? When I walked by this morning there was a hole in the asphalt almost the width of two spaces and seeingmly 6-8 feet deep...right in front of Ray's. Don't worry, Ray's et al (businesses in that shopping center) are apparently open and unharmed.

Yeah, for real in Ray's parking lot. If we aren't right in front of Ray's look for a gray Chevy Silverado 2500 pickup - if the tailgate is up you'll see the Porcupine Racing sticker on it [ref. avatar].

In addition to ShoeBoxOven's donation, an anonymous member is donating 6 (six) stems of Eisch breathable crystal Bordeaux glasses, brand new and in a box. These retail for $40-45 a stem. I will sell them in pairs (though if someone wants two or three pairs, that's fine) to the highest bidder in person, not on-line. Probably with a reserve, though.

My one and only experience with an estate sale, the customers were very sniffy at kitchenware, the early ones were looking for pricey treasures that the sellers didn't recognize the value of, and the later ones looking to furnish a house or apartment.

After deducting the expenses of advertising and signs and so forth -- we made money but didn't sell anything for anywhere close to what it was worth, even used.

I interviewed four different estate sales specialists who informed me that they wouldn't touch one of these sales if they were going to clear less than $5,000 or so for the effort.

I think it's because of the area -- so many of the people around here have so much money, and many of the ones that don't also don't have access to newspaper advertising or cars.

It was a learning experience.

If you donate to the Salvation Army or similar, you get a nice tax break, but I gather that the purpose here is to try to ensure that this stuff goes to a good home.

As one might expect, this is/was a fun and friendly DR.com gathering with lots of culinary goodies, gadgets, and gizmos being 'relocated' for a good cause. Michael's generous donation of space, adult beverages, and meat refreshments made it that much better - thanks! And from the small bite of ShoeBox Oven's unbelievably rich and delicious brownies, I think a trip to the Courthouse Farmers Market is in my future next weekend.

Thank you, Porcupine, for making all these wonderful items available to us - and hopefully we helped make a generous donation to Share Our Strength possible.

Five years I lived a block from the Courthouse Farmers' Market! Why why WHY was I not informed about these amazing brownies?

Thank you, Porcupine, for organizing this great for-a-good-cause event!

Michael, thank you for the libations and comestibles. Those three NY strips are sitting in my fridge mocking me - "Hahaha! We're delicious and you can't have us until you've digested your pizza! Muauhahah!"

Too much food, beer, and heat.

It was great to meet everyone, even if I didn't catch/remember all your names (Ferhat knows what I'm talking about). Jacques, you look exactly like I imagined.

I apologize if I came off as a LITTLE shy and reserved, because normally I'm not like that at all. Normally I'm MONSTROUSLY shy and reserved. Next time I'll have to drink more.

See you all at an upcoming event!

I'm so overwhelmed I don't know where to begin.

The donrockwell.com community is amazing. Thank you so much to everybody who made today's event happen:

To LydiaR for shopping the most, and for bringing all the extra boxes and bags.

To Goldenticket for running a close second.

To a certain anonymous donor for the glasses - we got a good price, buddy.

To Rissa and a whole bunch of others for showing up early to help set up (I'm sorry, I forgot who else!)

To Michael for the tables and the space in front of his restaurant.

To Michael again for cold water, beer, wine, steak and gorgonzola pizza, then pesto pizza - wow!

To the staff of Guajillo, who could have given us a hard time about encroaching on their space, but didn't (and we really tried not to).

To ShoeBoxOven for the rich and delicious brownies.

To Scott Johnston and Crackers for bringing more stuff to sell.

...And everyone else who showed, for your good humor and kind company on a beautiful day, as well as the donations, of course.

And to Mr. Porcupine, of course, who did an awful lot of work beforehand.

Yeah yeah yeah, I know, cut to the chase.

You ready....?

We raised $1357 for Share Our Strength. Michael stood there with his checkbook as we totaled all the bills and checks, then matched the donation with a check for $1357!

And then a few more people bought things as we were packing up, so the grand total is $2,760.00.

I will contact Share Our Strength Monday to get them the money. The donation will say something along the lines of "in loving memory of Phyllis Rouse, from her family and the DonRockwell.com community".

Thank you. We Rock!

ETA - and several people have yet to pick up what they reserved, so the number is will increase.

(If you're one of those people, please contact me to make arrangements. Thanks)

The generosity of Michael Landrum is quite breath-taking at times, like today. Really, if he didn't exist could any of us possibly invent him?

Nah. Not even Rocks.

Michael rocks! No kidding. He really is a remarkably talented, big-hearted dude, who has found a home here with us in the DR.com community. And aren't we lucky! It's no wonder that he has a lot of fans here. And here's to Phyllis, who must have been a very good and discerning cook, to judge by the quality of her kitchen accoutrements. Those who cook and who didn't show up early or at all, missed a real opportunity. This was a fun event. Thanks to Elizabeth and Steve for figuring out a great way to pay tribute to Phyllis' love of the culinary arts, and to assure that her tools will continue to create.

It's easy to echo others about the kindness and generosity of Porcupine and Michael Landrum (and all those who made purchases today, as part of it) and I do, but here's what I'm thinking. I've been to picnics, happy hours, random whimming, planned events where maybe or not my lottery number would come up to attend.......

But there was something seriously special and pleasant about today that was totally different from other DR events. As if it was more community than "dining group." And as porcupine said.....Rock!

When I packed my van yesterday, I vowed not to return with more than I’d brought. I came out about even. Thank you Porcupine and Mr. Porcupine, Michael Landrum, ShoeBoxOven (yum!) and everyone who helped set up and break down. So many things found good homes.

Here are some of the photos of our afternoon.

The goods:

s71067fi.jpg

Michael Landrum made focaccia pizzas – one with chunks of grilled steak, gorgonzola, tomatoes, and green sauce on top, one with pesto, that I can only hope will make occasional appearances during happy hours at the bar of Ray’s Classics when it opens.

s71060080ha.jpg

He also made an very generous matching charitable donation at the end of the afternoon.

It was very nice to meet some of you yesterday, and I hope to participate in more events in the future. The group has a friendly and easygoing vibe!

Mr. Landrum's generosity knows no limits, and the gorgonzola foccacia was terrific.

I took home several items and they will be used gently and well.....the ravioli cutter and crimper are already making fast friends in my drawer!

Well-said CrescentFresh! This is exactly why I enjoy trying to make it to some of the events! There is definitely a sense of community amongst the DonRockwell members. Just gather us all together and who knows what we could do next...
