  1. Nice review of gnatharobed's brother's spot East by Northeast - Cambridge
  2. Anything new in Fairfax? gnatharobed and I are heading to the Muse/Silversun Pickups show tomorrow night.
  3. Thanks, all! Don, I'll probably need one of those once the client gets sick of the closest steakhouse. Daniel, I don't know the geography well at all. I just know that I'm right on the beach smack dab in the middle of Fort Lauderdale.
  4. I am headed to Fort Lauderdale on a rather long business trip, and hoping to find some good, cheap eats. My expense report after nine (nine!) days will be big enough without eating room service once a day. Oh, and my waistline too. If you have suggestions, I'm all ears. Thanks!
  5. If Mozelle's were located in DC, I would go there all too often. My first dinner there was so good that I went back for lunch a day later. Unlike a lot of Winston-Salem establishments that try to be all things to all people (American-Southern-Asian fusion-howboutataco?), Mozelle's sticks to what it does well: Southern inspired cooking. My dinner (w/ two colleagues) started off with a happy surprise: it was Monday which meant it was half-price wine night. Our lovely wine (2007 St. Supery Sauvignon Blanc) would be just $15. [The menu has been updated since my visit ~3 weeks ago, a good sign, so I'm working from memory.] We shared two appetizers. Artichoke dip was the hit - seriously the best iteration of this calorie-fest that I have ever had. What turned out to be a mish-mash of spreads instead of a sampler was the miss. Not sure why they blended tapenade with sun dried tomato puree with...something else I'm forgetting. We scraped off most of the spreads and used the bread with the remnants of the artichoke dip. From that point forward, straight success. Loved my peppery buttermilk fried chicken (it was the breast - boneless but skin on). I can't resist buttery cheese grits so I had a side of those and we shared a side of the evening's special vegetable, haricot verts. My lunch two days later didn't disappoint. The menu for lunch is streamlined, as you'd expect. I went with tomato bisque and a grilled pimento cheese sandwich with bacon. It was all pretty perfect. The topper? All three of us had Mozelle's incredible homemade banana pudding. Can't wait to get back.
  6. Lordy, were we neglected at Nage today. I selected Nage for brunch with my parents today as it lies at the midway point between my apartment and the hotel where they stayed. I had wanted to check it out for awhile. While the food was, uh, fine (which is to say not bad, but nothing special), the service was unacceptably bad. Bad like no server attention within fifteen minutes of being seated. The restaurant was not even half full at the time, so I can't imagine what the service would be like with a larger crowd. At each step of the meal, he would disappear for long stretches of time. Our server wasn't unfriendly, just spacey and overwhelmed although we couldn't tell by what. I have had better French toast, better lattes, better bacon, etc. elsewhere so I'm not all that motivated to return to Nage.
  7. A quick report from Cashion's: This was my first trip to Cashion's in at least a year. I have had lots of great meals there, however this one was a mix of hits and misses. I cobbled together a no-entree meal of butternut squash soup, an arugula salad with goat cheese and appetizer portion of tagliatelle with lamb ragu. The soup was described as spicy, and it was. Too spicy with chiles unfortunately, and I like spicy. A friend also had the soup and agreed. Adding salt helped balance the flavor a little, but neither of us finished the bowls of soup. The arugula salad was nicely dressed and served with a large disc of Pipe Dreams goat cheese, however the greens were rather tough. YMMV. I prefer baby arugula. The tagliatelle was terrific. I'd gladly order it again. For dessert (yeah, I pigged out), I had the miniature fried apple pies with ice cream and apple puree. Good, but not swoon-worthy. I'd probably try something else if the pies were offered again. Among my dining party, they agreed with the hits/misses observation. Popular items included the mushrooms with liver sauce served over polenta and a prawn appetizer. The fig and goat cheese tartlet went back to the kitchen minus only a few bites.
  8. I have been to Bar Pilar twice in the last week. The food continues to be great, sometimes even amazing, but damn, if the service doesn't tend to suck. This is true whether it's a quiet Sunday night or early on a Saturday night. Some of the staff members just don't seem to care. Food highlights: crispy potatoes, country sausage with gravy, spiced pickled carrots, corn soup with cilantro and a nice kick from chiles (I forget what kind) and raspberry streusel pie with the best vanilla ice cream I have tasted in a long time. Bar Pilar's value is also a huge selling point for me.
  9. My second visit to CCC. I like it with two exceptions: It's expensive. My iced latte (large which is about 12 oz here - I'm guessing though) and muffin were $7.60. I'm willing to pay a little more to support a local business, but the prices will probably keep me from a daily drop in. It's loud as hell. All hard surfaces, no apparent soundproofing. If there aren't many people present, no problem, but I'm presently trying to drown out two loud laughers and one ridiculous shout-talker with my ipod.
  10. Has anyone tried the shuttle from Chinatown to H Street? If so, how regularly does it run?
  11. The food isn't anything special, but the menu covers a lot of ground and the outdoor deck at the Mazza location is pretty nice.
  12. Hello from CCC. Nice to have it as an option in the 'hood. The iced latte I'm sipping on right now tastes just right. More detailed commentary after more visits.
  13. I like the lattes, and I don't mind the music (both stylistically and with respect to volume), however it's all hard surfaces here, producing an environment in which it's tough to think, much less concentrate. Clank, thunk, names shouted when drinks are ready, clank again... I'd visit again, but not when I'm trying to write or get any work done.
  14. Another restaurant has closed for renovations (at least that is what the sign says): Szechuan Gallery on H between 6th and 7th Streets NW.
  15. My friend and I found our way to Cava in SE last week when, as suggested above, Matchbox was full. We only ordered a few dishes - enough to leave with a bill of $52 (pre tip) divided by two with one glass of wine each, and yet left with full bellies. We started with hummus in the interest of time because both of us were really hungry. It was...you know, hummus with pita. We got what we expected. As hillvalley noted, the lamb sliders are a hit: juicy and full of flavor, although a bit sloppy thanks to said juice plus chopped tomatoes, red onions and feta. As she also noted, the roasted red peppers we received alongside olive oil and olives are beyond spicy. We also enjoyed meatballs marinated in a lemon sauce and souvlaki (isn't chicken great when it's not overcooked?). Nice atmosphere and eager to please service in my friend's new neighborhood so I expect to return.
  16. Great to hear from you! 120 pounds lost is a terrific accomplishment. Best wishes on your birthday too.
  17. Good for you! Keep it up. I am thinking of keeping a food journal. There are some things I know I do right (breakfast is usually raisin bran with skim milk and whatever fruit I have on-hand) and others I do wrong (too much pasta, too much butter, not enough vegetables, not enough cardio).
  18. Does anyone know how bilrus is doing?
  19. If you surveyed every athlete in the four major professional sports, I suspect you'd have at least 20% say that CF is their favorite restaurant. At least. Another 5-10% would say The Olive Garden and a similar quantity would proffer P.F. Chang's (for me, that's the least offensive of the bunch - I get dumplings and short ribs with pineapple and brown rice. Every time.). A smattering would name a fast food restaurant such as McDonald's, Popeye's or Chipotle. You'd find correlations between age and these choices too. Some open their minds to new things over time, some don't. But you can pretty much guess that you'd get 40 rookies in a room and hear 5 non-chain favorites in the bunch max.
