  1. My take on Ardeo is that it's "fine" but unexciting. I prefer the more casual Bardeo, although I wish they'd refresh the food menu as frequently as the wine options. [PS I strongly disagree with that hooey about not ordering based on accoutrements. ]
  2. I'm having dinner with a client at Austin Grill in Silver Spring of all places tonight (loooong story), and we're looking for a nice spot at which to have dessert. Ice cream specifically, if possible. I know Del Ray has the Dreamery. Does SS have a similarly good - OK, I'll take decent - option? Thanks.
  3. Good Lord, give the guy a break. Dean has every reason to be enthusiastic - about the slicer and the restaurant in general. Dino is a great addition to the 'hood.
  4. I've only been to Belga once, but it was pretty much a perfect dinner. The space is, IMO, really attractive and I loved the food. Everything from poached asparagus with hard-cooked egg to the aforementioned hanger steak with potatoes (cooked with chunks of BACON!!! )...really delicious. On our way out the door, we met the previously-discussed Bart (see egullet) who is in that sorta dreamy club started by Derek.
  5. Feel better, Monica! [oops, duh. I just re-read the heading. I don't have any info re: Tysons. Sorry!]
  6. Be afraid, be very afraid. <in other words, skip this spot>
  7. I was just thinking "Coppi's Organic" should have it's own discussion." Thanks DR! Quickly (because I do need to do some work occasionally), I really like the atmosphere, the food and the wine. But every few visits, something seems to go horribly awry. Once it was the winter version of trenette coming out horribly gloppy and buried under some relative of fennel I couldn't identify. This past time, it was a sorrily underseasoned, soupy gnocchi served with a side of brain-dead service. I would paste the description of the gnocchi preparation below, however the web site is not updated. [maybe now is a good time to start a list of the worst offenders in the "restaurants that screw me over by posting old menus or no menus on their old-ass web sites"] Essentially it was gnocchi primavera with every vegetable found in the fridge. No discernable sauce except a puddle of...brownish olive oil at the bottom. Ugh. Fortunately, three servers noticed my largely untouched dish and after standing around me, scratching their heads and generally making this seem like a tragedy, they took it off the bill (I was not going to suggest that). That was typical of the service. Really trying to be helpful, but we seemed to have three men waiting on us, one of whom was absolutely gorgeous, but completely dim. At one point, I asked about an unfamiliar-to-me flavor (fiordilatte) of gelato on the dessert menu, sandwiched between coffee gelato with Belgian chocolate and bittersweet chocolate. I asked him about the flavor of "fiordilatte" but should have just guessed, I see now. With exaggerated patience, he bent over to get closer to my menu and me. Speaking very sloooooowwwly, he said "those are our gelato flavors. Would you like one or more of them to finish your meal?" It was funny...my friend and I were sitting there stifling laughter as the guy spoke to me as if I were six. I don't know...it was just weird to me. He never did tell me what it was so feel free to enlighten this country bumpkin - I got coffee with chocolate and it hit the spot.
  8. For what it's worth, my friend and I had GREAT cheeses at Sonoma tonight. Taleggio, gorgonzola cremificato and a Pipe Dreams (PA) goat. So great! I pretty much liked them in that order.
  9. [normally I would agree re: Coppi's, however I had an incredibly bad meal there last Friday - bland food and service that was truly brain dead.]
  10. Seems like that is the big question. I perceived the Kuna=>Opera transition as greed-motivated. Like "I'm packing 'em in and I can't justify simply raising prices, so I'll just reposition the whole place." If I'm off-base, feel free to correct me, but that was how I took the change and it upset me enough that I never crossed Opera's doorstep. I contemplated it, but knowing that 1. I'd need a reservation to do so and 2. it would be more $$ than the gem that was Kuna, I lacked motivation. And I really, really enjoyed my meals at Kuna, samples of wine and chats with the owner.
  11. I'll be having dinner with a friend at Sonoma tonight. Anyone else planning to be in the general vicinity?
  12. I have seen grilled cheese sandwiches served with tomato soup on at least two menus (Bar Pilar and the not-yet-open Town Hall). What is this, grade school cafeteria chic?
  13. Date? Your post says "typically" the first Monday of the month, but I thought it best to confirm.
  14. Since Indique opened, I have probably only been to Heritage India (the Glover Park location) once or twice. The food was always consistently good, however I had a few complaints about most visits. Note: I recognize that Indique to Heritage is not an apples to apples comparison I felt nickeled and dimed with charges being tacked on for small portions of daal and white rice. The service, which ranged from indifferent to downright rude, also deterred me from making return visits. I was also really sad when they removed lamb samosas from the menu. Today, though, I received their Restaurant Week menu via e-mail and it piqued my interest in giving the Glover Park location another try. I can post it here or in the RW discussion if anyone is interested, or feel free to PM me your e-mail address and I can forward the message. Has anyone been to Heritage India lately? I'm not so interested in the more fushiony menu offered by the Dupont location. I'd love to hear about hits, misses and of course, the service.
  15. A friend and I went to Palena last night, only partly interested in the food and wine (we recalled that the a/c there tends to be in the frigid zone - score!). I had been somewhat avoiding the place since the departure of Jeff and some other staffers I had liked. Although I love Palena's food, a big part of my frequent visits had been the friendly service. Overall, we had a good meal and a nice time, but I couldn't shake the "something's missing" feeling. The fact that the cafe was awfully crowded didn't help. About the food: Our cheese plate was delicious, but the portion was miniscule compared to that we have enjoyed on past visits. My favorite cheese was a blue from PA (not Pipe Dreams this time though and the name escapes me now). There was a nice robbiola (sp?) however it was the enjoyably pungent one we've had before. I found the blue-goat to be just ok (my friend loved it) and the last cheese, one from Wales, I found incredibly bland. I got ye olde favorite gnocchi for my entree and was underwhelmed. The preparation sounded much more exciting (IMO) than it tasted: guanciale, truffle, sweet corn. The portion was significantly smaller than ever before. For me, last night's food highlight was my dessert, a blueberry sour cream tart. Incredible! I wanted to lick the plate.
  16. In order to help you find the world's best caipirinha (no extra charge for hyperbole), here is a link to Rumba Cafe's web site.
  17. Thanks for your honesty. My friend and I have switched venues and will either be at Palena (good a/c!) or Dino (I've only been there once and can't speak to their cooling abilities). It's a shame 2 Amy's isn't metro-accessible. That fizzy red wine (chilled, of course) would hit the spot tonight.
  18. Is it a matter of style (chunky vs. smooth) or is Bar Pilar's just not good? I really hope they have strong a/c!!
  19. Oh, that's not cool. You really didn't point it out? I call foul.
