  1. I had this about a month ago, and really enjoyed it, though I remember remarking at the time that it didn't really taste like ramen. It's a great soup, though.
  2. There was a lot of messaging about work-life balance, and family, so maybe there are more people, but not all of them drawing a full-time salary?
  3. You got it! I posted this one just as an illustration of how different WF locations are from one another in terms of quality and offerings, not really relevant to this thread I know but something that struck me when I saw this bar in a Tampa location (plus some amazing looking seafood a few feet away), house-made pasta in a Cherry Hill, NJ WF, etc...DC does not get the cream of the Whole Foods crop.
  4. Where did I dine? Hint: it was not in the Washington area, but it was at a chain that has places both in and around DC.
  5. The miles of rolling strip malls, box stores, and national restaurant chains that surround Tampa are the last place any if us would probably expect to find a little Austrian schnitzel house, but that's exactly what we stumbled across driving down Dale Mabry Highway near Raymond James Stadium today. Austrian Peppers (I don't get the name either) is five tables in front of an open kitchen, German-language radio playing from the speakers, an Austrian mountainscape photo plastered on one of the walls, and individual framed portraits of famous Austrians at each booth (we got Arnold Schwarzenegger, the couple across from us got Christoph Waltz). If the two dishes we got are any indication, this is a place of simple but very well executed food. Both of our schnitzels were lightly battered, expertly fried, tender pieces of pork, accompanied by delicious little sides--a mayonnaiseless potato salad, cucumber and yogurt, and spaetzle. We asked the extremely friendly waitress how this place came to be, but she didn't have much of an answer for us except that the owner used to vacation in Tampa, and liked the area enough to open a restaurant here. If for some reason you find yourself stuck in the dreary sameness that is the area around the Tampa airport, I strongly urge you to check this unique little place out.
  6. I had a chance to taste this year's Hopslam on draft last night. In my opinion, the trend of this getting more one-dimensional over time continues. I barely got any of the honey that used to make this so interesting.
  7. I thought they call them "bao". When you google "bao buns" quite a few recipes come up. (They're still selling there, by the way)
  8. When we went (early) last Saturday night, we noticed two children under four at two different tables. We noticed because we were thinking about whether we should try to bring our own for-year-old. No highchairs in evidence, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.
  9. We wound up at Huong Viet, and it was fine. Nothing spectacular, but everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. I got a noodle dish off the "chef's special" or equivalent portion of the menu with a variety of meats and grilled pieces of tofu and egg. It was tasty. The table loved the quail, which I'd enjoyed on earlier visits but didn't get a piece of this time. Our four year old enjoyed his spring rolls.
  10. Heading to Eden Center for lunch with friends Sunday, no particular destination in mind. What are folks liking these days?
  11. Thanks, that's great. I'd prefer DC proper but it's not terribly important.
  12. There's one accountant thread already in Help Needed, but the suggestions there are for firms, and I don't think I need a full-service firm...just someone good to start doing our (moderately complicated?) taxes and review some issues with us. Thanks for any suggestions! DC proper would be a plus but not necessary.
  13. Thought I would give a shout out to Batch 13, at 1724 14th St. NW between Logan Circle and U Street. I've always found them to have a really interesting selection of spirits. I'm no expert but I see lots of stuff here I've never seen anywhere else (single malt whisky from India, anyone?). Decent selection of craft beers as well. Customer service isn't great, though, and the staff don't seem to know much about the product, which is kind of odd because someone is bringing in some decent stuff. Those of you in the area may have also heard of the recent somewhat hyped opening of Gallagher and Graham, billed as a "high end liquor store" on 12th St. just south of U (next to Dukem). I took a look around a few days ago, and my two cents: not worth a visit unless you've been tasked with stocking up for your fraternity's next weekend party. I've never been so bored walking around a liquor store...
  14. Just happened to be walking by Batch 13 and not only do they stock Koval they're actually doing a tasting right now!
  15. I *think* I've seen Koval at Batch 13 on 14th St.
  16. I'm not sure where the quote "Can Yelp Reviews Doom a Restaurant" comes from, but it doesn't appear in the Washington Business Journal article, which doesn't imply that, and doesn't imply that the academic research implies that. As far as I can tell, it simply seems to be saying that the information in Yelp reviews and star ratings is indicative enough of factors affecting the restaurant's future success that it can reasonably predict that success. But it would be fascinating to know if they were also able to tease out the independent effect of the Yelp reviews themselves. I certainly wouldn't just assume there's no causation there.
  17. Et Voila's in the Palisades is good. You didn't specify lunch or dinner but they are open for both I believe.
  18. Simul Parikh, there's an app called Waygo that will do this for you. No physicist required. There's a thread somewhere about it.
