  1. Ted I'll be back and yes it could have been a bad night. The lamb chops were great but when the other 5 dishes we ordered came at the same time we were overwhelmed. Mark
  2. It is not beef on weck with a brioche. I went to school in Buffalo for 4 years. It has to be a kummelweck roll. From Wikipedia A kummelweck, or sometimes kimmelweck or even kümmelweck, is a salty roll that is popular in Western New York. It is similar to a Kaiser roll, but topped with pretzel salt and caraway seeds. Kummelweck is commonly shortened to “weck" (pronounced "wick"), and often served in the Buffalo metropolitan area with roast beef and horseradish to form a sandwich known colloquially as "beef on weck." Along with wings, beef on weck is one of the two most distinct dishes of the region. A typical style of beef on weck sandwich is made from slow-roasted rare roast beef hand carved to provide about 1/2 inch (2 cm) of meat on the bottom half of the roll. The cut face of the top half of the roll may be dipped in the juices from the roast. Prepared horseradish is usually provided for the diner to spread on the top half of the roll to taste. In the Buffalo area, it is common to see jars of horseradish on eatery tables that serve the sandwich, much as you might see ketchup bottles available in other restaurants.
  3. Last night was crazy at Cava. The owners need to expand or rethink their policies. My wife and I arrived at 7pm and were told 45 minute wait. No problems, since the bar was jammed we walked over to another place(name escpares me La Vinque) for a glass of wine. Came back at 7:45 and did not get seated for another 45 minutes. Then the place was so loud and dark that it was hard to read menu of talk to waitress. Food at this point was thrown at us faster then once could imagine how it is really cooked to order. My predicition is that Cava is soon to be a victim of its sucess. What started out as pleasant, tastly and popular is now crazy and obnoxious.
  4. Guiseppes is Rockville has the best NY pizza. I gre up in Brooklyn and Scott at Guiseppes does a great job.
  5. Don Cava is in walking distance to where I live. Its value raises when I can get there in 5 minutes as opposed to 30 minutes to Bethesda. Mark
  6. Now if only it was in Rockville/Potomac/Bethesda. Ashburn is far.
  7. I highly recomend Chef Allen in North Miami beach. He is a James Beard Winner who has redefined miami cuisine. www.chefallens.com Google Chef Allen to find out for yourself.
  8. I agree with bread and water. But make sure yo have good stemware so one can swirl the wine and smell it before tasting.
  9. This was a great event. We should do this regularly. Seriously I am glad my son and I had spent the time cutting potatos and helping a good cause.
  10. Why grind a great cut of meat!! Season and thrown on grill.
  11. I have always thought the wine business is interesting. Whether working for a distributor or a retail operation, it would combine my love of wine with something that is always changing. I know some people in wine retail who have given up what seemed to be lucarative jobs to work in a wine store. And of course the trips to Burgundy help a lot.
  12. The best thing at the Capitol Grille is the "stoli Dolli" which is a martini made with the Stoli has Dole Pinapples submerged in it for a week. After two of those one seems less worried about the prices. The steaks are great and so is the wine list. But $$$$
  13. Another great dinner at Dino Saturday night. My two teenage boys had the Burrata and I had the Antipasto.. The antipasto could have fed the table and it was amazing. Each vegetable had it's own flavor from sweet, to tangy to pickled. Of course I had brought a 2000 Barolo which was great. I also brought a Brunello but didn't open it as I had an early morning the next day. I had the pig. Again this was amazing. My Wife had the veal. Clean plate there. My two sons each had paste with Meatballs. Thanks to Dino for obliging as they really are orderig off the kids menu but wanted and recieved an adult portion. Teenage boys eat a lot. Desert was heaven. I need to return on Tuesday/Thursday when there is no corkage. Either way. Dino is amazing.
  14. Rockwood Manor is available as an option in Cabin John. It is a Montgomery Parks space http://mcparkandplanning.org/parks/wehavet...wood/index.shtm When I had a party there I used Ridgewells and had a blast!!
  15. Ate there last night with my 2 teenage sons. My 1st impression was expensive, 55 for three of us and we only had one fries. Each son ordered a double burger which they deemed very good and filling. But at 12.99 it should be. They shared a fries because they thought for those proces they would get a real portion. Not I had the AHI Tuna which was good and a summerfest. Did not know if they refilled the sodas, so my sons sipped their sodas carefully. We left satisified but still hungry. Another fries and a 2nd summerfest would have made me happier. My son who is about to leave to college said this was above the price range of a college student. BTW-These are growing, athletic kids who do eat a bunch. They felt that 5 guys was 1/3 of the price, I felt better here as the Ahi burger did not kill me.
  16. Congrats We hosted my son's high school graduation dinner at Dino and it was amazing. We must have scared Dean off as he did not come try the amazing Brunello I brought, but the food was perfect. Anytime you can have three generations all happy and satisfied, it is not an easy task. My wife and I need to come back..Soon..Maybe celebrate after dropping my son off at college(far away)
  17. Has anyone eaten at this persian place on Rockville Pike. Yes, the same place that has Gelato. The owner said he has been in business for 10 years, the buffet sounded good. Anyone?
  18. Ate at Amsterdam Falafel this weekend. I am at a loss as to why this doesn't get as many mentions as a burger joint. This is amazing stuff. Falafel is made to order and there is an infinite variety of toping you can apply, limited only by the space on top of your falafel. Toppings including some very spicy garlic dip, to grilled eggplant, to roasted cauliflower. Fries were very good as well. This reminded me of Falafel I have had in Europe. Note..This is messy and can be extremly spicy. No plate is provided and neither are utensils. But they are not necessary, just be careful to eat over the table. If you have never been here, go at earliest oppurtunity. Yes, skip the burger or flatbread and live on the edge.
