  1. Welcome to this hour's installment of "Questions about packing and moving a kitchen" number six in a series. 1. Does preservative-free salad dressing go bad if it's still sealed (with a cork, though some has leaked out it seems). It's pretty old. There's a film of 'stuff' on top, but it doesn't look like mold. Tastes ok (In fact, it's good stuff...I really should have tried it by now! Chinablue-type dressing). Would botulism toxin or like...the hantavirus affect the taste? 2. How quickly does white truffle oil lose potency if it does? (None of this "I don't know, I've never had it last that long " business, thanks) Tune in later for another 'questions about packing and moving a kitchen'.
  2. Silly Athenians...the biscuits are superior McDonalds breakfast sandwich vehicles compared to the muffin.
  3. This is at least what it will run you most places normally. I'm not sure what your point is.
  4. Which of the other ones have been on TV lately? They aren't voting for the bakery, they're voting for that guy they saw on the Food Network.
  5. FINE, I'll turn on the Windows box. Something about public TV/radio using closed streaming formats bugs me.
  6. Just so we're clear, these were iterative additions, not seperate trials.
  7. Coke..............................................Good Coke with half and half.....................less good .....with maple syrup.........................better .....with strawberry maple syrup..........no change .....with coffee..................................bad
  8. Circle Bistro (Many Happy Hours, never sit-down dinner!) Firefly (Ditto!) Komi Restaurant Kolumbia (Don't they have a good lunch deal?) Taberna del Alabardero W. Domku Agraria and Blue Duck once they settle in a little Minibar
  9. This message has been sponsored by OPEC. Keep on drivin', America, and thanks!
  10. Zoramagorlis: The tacos al pastor have rotated around to pork. They're pretty good, I thought. Giant shrimp: Yeah, place has slow times like any other. I went at 5 pm on a Sunday to catch the beginning of happy hour with some friends who were about to fly out of town and the place was dead. It was almost depressingly quiet: empty and bright does not suit Oyamel. Still, it's tough as ever to get close to the bar on a Friday or Saturday night. For my part, I was there last week, and by pure happenstance caught my favorite bartender on his last night. Apparently wanting a change after having been with the company a few years, he's taken a position as bar manager/tender at The News Cafe. JP does really good work behind the bar. While there, I had this excellent ginger and rum drink, which was not as sweet as I expected, and thankfully, not as powerfully gingery as it very easily could have been. The previous week I had a variation on his "White Rose" (I forget what's in this one...know it uses Agavero) that instead of a rosepetal garnish had a maguey worm. Less of a girl drink. I also hear that Jose Andres is up to something. The move to Andale, if it happens, might not be just a simple relocation.
  11. Here's hoping not. We dont' need another 'what's on your rotation' thread....Here's where I'll be so far:
  12. I-95 rest stop McDonalds outside Mystic, CT!I don't think I can support the nomination of soft shell crabs. They have a limited season, so the instinct is to 'smoke them while you've got them' (I tried smoking soft-shell crabs once, but they're so hard to keep lit). I'm ok with that. It's like me and Cadbury Creme Eggs. They come but once a year.
  13. Any happy hour action going on? Last friday in town (not counting the next one where I'll be in NH of all damn places, and the following when I move)! Gah, it's already 6!
  14. Some Hangar One would be hot, but that's hardly bargain-bin stuff. I hear the Stoli flavored is pretty good.
  15. Request for Clarification: We talking GOOD flavored vodka? /Can make his own crappy flavoured vodka, thank you very much
  16. Moving is going to suck, but there's an upshot: I'm going to have a basement. It's going to be ON! Watch this space!
  17. If you want to completely eliminate the appearance of impropriety, save the intro and revelation until you've paid the check and are on the way out.
  18. A couple weeks (months?) ago, the Brickskeller guy posted this message to the DC beer mailing list saying that he had video proof that Thor and his girlfriend broke into (or at least, accessed in an unauthorized manner) the locked fridge at the Brick where he keeps and ages his really good stuff. It became this whole ugly thing, with people calling for boycotts of Birreria and even legal action......until it surfaced that what Mr. Brickskeller neglected to mention was that Thor and companion were accompanied by a Brick employee with the key to the fridge (Perhaps not permission for a tour, but acting as an agent of the establishment none-the-less. Needless to say, the person was fired). Little omission from his initial screed. Oops! --Matt Who Isn't Biased Against This Brick Blowhard Or His Comprehensively Outclassed Establishment
