  1. We built one, using plans downloaded from Forno Bravo. It was a big project. Actually I'll get my husband to chime in, because he's the one who built it. By the way, it turned out great and we have made some awesome pizza.
  2. It has been a year since we first checked this place out, so we went for lunch a few days ago and I think they are better than ever. We just had pho and crispy spring rolls. The broth in the pho was the best I've had anywhere recently - very flavorful and complex - and all the accompanying sprouts and basil were fresh and beautiful. The spring rolls were excellent.
  3. My husband and I were having dinner at Firefly quite a few years ago and were seated at a table next to the kitchen. John came and stood in the doorway and chatted with us off and on during most of our meal. We talked about this board, food of course and wine too. He really made that meal memorable. I've enjoyed noting John's progress through the DC restaurant scene since then and am sad to hear he's moving away. But, we wish him all the best in Pittsburgh.
  4. We went with friends today to the Museum of Visionary Art (incredibly unbelievable wonderful place) and then needed some place not too far away for lunch. Found our way here with some difficulty because it's tucked away in an alley. We all had different burgers. You choose your meat, condiments and sides. I had lamb with feta, spicy yogurt sauce, onions, tomatoes and lettuce, regular bun and house-made potato chips. The burger is delicious. You need lots of napkins for the juice running down your wrists. The atmosphere is friendly and very casual. Great place!
  5. We spent 9 days in Sicily last May. Started out in Taormina and had a memorable meal at Osteria Nero d'Avola. The owner is a gregarious and memorable guy who roams the dining room and will regale you with stories of the fish he caught that morning or the wild asparagus he picked yesterday with a pair of gorgeous Australian twins. The food is on the innovative side and quite delicious. Very nice wine selection. Watch the prices on specials. Another of our favorites was Le Vin de L'Assassin Bistrot on the island of Ortigia in Siracusa. The food is Sicilian with a bit of a French twist and very well prepared. We walked by the closed restaurant in the afternoon, peered in and thought "Oh my, it looks gloomy." But when we returned for dinner, we found it to be atmospheric and lovely. Can't remember what we ate, but it was all delicious. We continued on south and around the island, ending in Palermo. We found some nice places to stay and more good eating, if you need advice.
  6. My husband and I will be in Germany for 4 days in late October and plan to visit the Pfalz and Mosel wine regions. Any suggestions for nice towns, good eating, pleasant hotels?
  7. Had dinner at Thai Square last night with a Thai friend (who is an excellent cook and very particular about what she eats) and others and can report that most of the food was outstanding. All of us have lived in Thailand and felt the food tasted very authentic. Everything was fresh. We had crab fried rice and the crab was sweet and delicious. Had a crispy flounder that was great, good pad see yew (?), som tham, beef jerky and laap khai. The laap was the only disappointment. The seasoning was odd and too spicy. The restaurant was crowded but the service was wonderful and our food came out amazingly quickly. Best Thai restaurant experience we've had in a long time!
  8. We ate at Lia's about 4 years ago and found the food entirely forgettable. So I've been curious to try it again since Cesare became chef. Finally got there last night and really enjoyed the food. We tried the Crispy Calamari antipasto and it was very good - fresh, lightly crispy and with 3 nice sauces. I had the Pasta alla Chitarra - marinated cherry tomato, garlic, basil, evoo, pecorino romano and it was delicious. A friend had Lasagna which she liked a lot. My husband had one of the seafood mixtures and thought it was over-seasoned. Our server said that Cesare was there every day, but yesterday had left by the time we were there - after 8 pm. We ate outside which was very pleasant. It seemed to be very noisy inside.
  9. We took out-of-town visitors to Pizza CS this week and met another friend there the week before. We all loved our pizzas and noted that business has picked up a lot since the nice review in the Gazette. My husband loves the $2 Peroni on Tuesday night.
  10. There's a Living Social coupon deal for Indique Heights going on right now too.
  11. They have really put this place together amazingly quickly. Looks like they will be open to the public by next week!
  12. My husband and I stopped in for lunch a few days ago after reading the very nice review in the Gazette. We were pleasantly surprised by the freshness of the food and the attractiveness of the small dining room. I tried the medium pho (should have had small), and it was an excellent rendition. Broth was very tasty and the accompanying bean sprouts were gorgeous. My husband had a different soup with egg noodles and wontons and liked it too. We also tried both the fresh garden roll with shrimp and the crispy fried roll and they too were excellent. We plan to go again and sample more of the menu. When we arrived around 12:30 all the tables were full. We waited around 10 minutes for a table to open up and were glad we did!
  13. My husband and I decided to brave opening night crowds to try out the pizza at Haven last night. At 6:45, it was crowded but we found seats at the bar and ordered our pizzas and a bottle of wine from one of the relatively inexpensive options. The ovens were blazing away and service was swift and friendly. The space is attractive but very noisy because of all the hard surfaces (and the crowd, of course). I was disappointed in the pizza. Maybe I'm just not a true fan of the New Haven style, although I've liked it at the source. The crust was rather hard and crackly and without flavor. Toppings were fine. I had tomato with mozzarella and arugula. My husband had the same base but with Italian sausage. The flavors all melded together instead of standing out on their own. I missed any bright acidity in the tomato sauce. Guess I just prefer Neapolitan style like Pizza CS in Rockville or Pizzeria da Marco in Bethesda (although I haven't been to the latter since last spring). Still, I'll probably go back to Haven in a week or so and give it another try.
  14. We took advantage of this wine offer last night. We had already planned to meet friends there for dinner, so this was an unexpected nice bonus. Pizzas were great as always!
  15. From Haven's photo blog Dec. 21st. - "wssc just approved our final inspection." Maybe they will open soon!
  16. Check out Safeway -http://weeklyspecials.safeway.com/customer_Frame.jsp?drpStoreID=2848. They have filet mignon roasts at $11.99/lb and rib eye roast for as little as $3.99/lb. This sale is only through Dec. 20th.
  17. While searching for a place to eat with a small group before a show at Lisner Auditorium, I turned up District Commons near Washington Circle, but no mention of it on Don Rockwell. Sounds like it might be nice. Does anyone know anything?
  18. We went to Arena Sunday a week ago. Decided to try Cantina Marina, on the water just across from Arena Stage. We parked easily (and free) on the street in front of the theater and walked over to the Cantina. This is a very casual place, geared to summer drinking and snacking on the water, but the atmosphere was pleasant, service fine and food okay. There were 4 of us and I think we mostly had their tacos - can be fish, shrimp or beef. I had fish which was tasty if not exceptional. They serve food at Arena Stage, but i haven't tried it. You can check it out on their website.
  19. Five of us stopped by tonight and had a lovely time. I had my new favorite pizza - their Rocket; fresh mozzarella, grape tomato, arugula, grana, lemon juice, EVOO and basil. Wow, delicious! So we had a few draft Peroni's, a bottle of Orvieto, house salad, a few pizzas - just really pleasant, and what a great crust!
  20. We went to the Tackle Box on Connecticut Avenue last night to use a Groupon purchased last spring. My husband had fried scallops, cole slaw and hush puppies and could barely eat any of it. The scallops turned out to be bay scallops (tiny) accompanied by heaps of fried batter nuggets and were greasy and unappetizing, cole slaw was soggy and the hush puppies dense and tasteless. I had fried haddock which was good but the accompanying side salad was a mass of soggy lettuce and dressing. Sorry to be negative, but the meal was really pretty horrible. On another note, we were told that the Georgetown location should open next week.
  21. Walked by again yesterday, and while peering in the windows encountered one of the owners. He says it should be about 2 weeks until opening day. Here's hoping. And the space looks amazing!
  22. My husband and I stopped in Pizza CS around 8 last night. It was empty when we got there (several more customers came in later), but the beautiful wood-burning oven was fired up. We ordered 2 pizzas, a Caesar salad and a couple glasses of wine. I had the Margherita - tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil and my husband had the sausage variety, with buffalo mozzarella and peppers I think. We loved the crust. It seems very authentic Neapolitan - puffy edges, tasty and pliant with some nice char. The toppings while good, seemed a bit sparse, although I realize that's the way Neapolitan-style pizzas are. We enjoyed the salad and found the small selection of wines reasonably priced and good partners for pizza. Although there are plenty of tables, the restaurant has a casual, take-out feeling about it. We enjoyed chatting with the friendly owners, discussing dough-making, ovens and equipment. We plan to return. Try them out soon while they are discounting all pizzas by $3 and you can try several!
