  1. Beer? Wine? I tried to check the website, but our "Smartfilter" here at work flags it as pornographic.
  2. I saw his (or her) posts there (CWG) too, and was feeling bad for him (or her). Now I'm quite less inclined to be sympathetic to his (or her) plight.
  3. New Yorkers wanna foist more regulation on themselves (thus begetting excessive bureaucracy, taxation, ad infinitum...) they can knock themselves the fuck out. Something tells me this kind of thing won't be happening here in Virginia any time soon, thank God.
  4. The website makes no mention of any location other than Arlington. I've been there, and it seems like more of a Mom & Pop operation (although the Web site is pretty slick).
  5. Noncomprehensive report from The Village at Shrlington (data current as of my walk through the area at about 3:15 PM): Carlyle - closed at 2 PM today, sign on the door says they will re-open for brunch at 9:30 AM tomorrow. Capitol City Brew Pub - will open for dinner this evening at 6 PM Guapo's - open Bungalow - closed today, according to sign posted on front door Aroma - appeared to be closed PING - sidewalks were being cleared as if in preparation for opening, but don't know if it was restaurant employees or property management personnel doing the clearing. Luna Grill - appeared to be closed Extra Virgin - appeared to be open Bonus Entry - I called Ramparts on Fern Street, guy who answered said they were open.
  6. Judging by that picture, whatever brown bag, potato-like substance, or test tube those may or may not have come from, they look pretty damn good.
  7. Asado Borracho at Llajtaymanta on Arlington Blvd. in Falls Church.
  8. Who "voted"? Isn't the Dining Guide based solely on Don's personal experiences?
  9. Had a nice dinner at the bar a couple of nights ago. You simply can't beat $3.00 pints of Dogfish Head 60 Minute on tap during happy hour (which lasts until 8). Having caught the aroma of goat cheese when I walked in the door, I zeroed in on the fried green tomato appetizer, and it did not disappoint. Two large tomato slices, delicately breaded and fried, topped with goat cheese crumbles, green tomato relish, and a (slightly too mayonnaisey) remoulade. When trying to decide on an entree, the bartender (who I think might have been one of the owners) suggested his favorites, and brought out a small metal ramekin of the pulled duck for me to taste. Good as it was, I settled on the crab-crusted grouper. The highlight of this dish was the okra, corn, pea, and tomato succotash, which I thought was perfectly cooked to an al dente crunch. The grouper itself was a disappointment, however. I thought the strong and somewhat fishy aroma and flavor of the crab overwhelmed the grouper; they just didn't play nicely together. The crust had a hard texture which made it seem like it had spent too much time under a heat lamp. The friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient service and bright, airy atmosphere (not to mention the awesome deal on the beer prices) mitigated the slight disappointment with my entree and made for a very pleasant experience overall. Next time, I think I'll go ahead and try that pulled duck sandwich...
  10. The good: The cheese quesadilla was actually pretty good. The tomato tortilla adds at least a little bit of interest (if not much tomato flavor) to the otherwise standard preparation of this signature sports bar dish. They don't skimp on the size of the quesadilla or the amount of fillings, either - plenty of Cheddar and Monterrey Jack cheese, tomato, and onion chunks. Served with a scoop of sour cream and jarred (and not at all spicy) salsa, and served at just the right temperature and doneness. Crisp, but not burned; cheese melted, but not gloppy or congealed. The Sierra Nevada in a large glass (at least 20 oz., possibly 24; I'm not good at judging things like this by sight) was $1.00 off for happy hour. The indifferent: Service at the bar was OK, but it took a good 25 minutes to get my food, which would have been acceptable had it been crowded. Which brings me to: The bad: The atmosphere was morgue-like. This was a disappointment. I know it's not the World Cup and it was a taped replay (I say taped because, judging by the poor picture quality, I think they really are using a VCR to record these matches), but I really expected to see at least a few Brazil fans there to watch their team - nope, just me and about 10 other patrons in the place. It was kind of depressing; absolutely no buzz at all. I ended up leaving after finishing my food and beer, about 10 minutes into the match. Sounds like I didn't miss much.
  11. In fairness, they do have Sierra Nevada on tap, and they offer a larger size glass in additional to the regular pint, which can be a decent deal. Looks like there is no cover charge for this evening's replay of Brazil/S. Africa, just their usual $10.00 minimum. Since I managed to avoid hearing the score (DON"T TELL ME!), and I didn't DVR the match, I'll be there tonight watching to see who we play in the final. I fully intend to post a review. Brace yourselves...
  12. Not when the Red Sox are in town and you show up 10 minutes before game time, they're not. I forgot to mention that they had Dogfish Head 60 Minute at the Red Porch bar. But they ran out around the 5th inning.
  13. I tried it last night; had the pulled pork sandwich ($10.00, including a side of cole slaw which I dumped on top of the sandwich). It was OK - nice chunks of relatively tender pulled pork, but a little too vinegary for me, as I prefer my barbeque to be more smoky/sweet. In my estimation, the pit beef sandwich from The Pit at the Red Loft > the pulled pork from Teddy's BBQ. Service was quick, friendly and efficient. By the way, did you know that they sell standing room tickets for $10.00? I showed up around 6:50 and got one of these at the ticket booth outside the center field gate. Along with the ticket, they give you a piece of paper listing about five or six designated standing areas throughout the park. Who knew?
  14. Going... going... I know you're at down a least two orders after tonight, Dean. That pig is an awesome thing. I sliced into it and met enough resistance to make me think for a minute that I might be cutting into bone - until I realized it was the crispy skin, and proceeded to continually slice off shards of skin-fat-meat 'til there weren't no more left. Thank you, as well, for your behind-the-scenes Riesling recommendation to go with my cheese plate. Dino's ongoing Restaurant Week special gets you this sublime pig plus an appetizer (I chose the Burrata), dessert or cheese plate, and aperitif (Grappa!) for $39.09. My bill also included the nice surprise of a $8.00 happy hour discount (and no, neither Dean nor the uber-friendly bartender knows me from Adam). Where else you gonna get a deal like that?
  15. I only wear mine when my Dashiki is at the cleaners.
  16. According to the press release, Teddy Folkman has by now taken over as Executive Chef. The new menu is on their Web site, so I assume that means it has officially been rolled out - has anyone sampled it yet? I've never been to Granville Moore's, so I don't know how similar it is, but I'm thinking this would improve the pre-game dining options for DC United fans.
  17. Maybe trying to convince people he's eating it without actually having to do so. Although, you know, it actually doesn't look that bad. Plump, nice golden-brown color...
  18. Oh, for the good old days when they used to be fried in beef tallow!
  19. In the guilty pleasure category, I nominate the garlic fries at Gordon Biersch.
  20. Meanwhile, the Secretary of Education takes one for the team.
