  1. This was going to be about Evening Star until I walked into the bar and found all the seats taken, so I walked back out. I drove back up Mt. Vernon Ave. to Del Merei Grille, where I found plenty of open seats at the bar. No more Dogfish Head on tap (at least not right now), so I had a Bell's Two-Hearted Ale. It had been a while since I had this beer, so I kind of forgot whether I liked it or not. Oh yeah, I remember, I do like this stuff - hoppy enough for this hop-head, but not overwhelmingly so. I began with the Deviled Eggs, which were sufficiently bacony (good), but a bit too mustardy (not so good). After carefully considering the Duck Breast and Pan Fried Grouper as entrees, I settled on the 12-oz. Kansas City Strip Steak. You get to choose from a variety of sauces and two sides. I chose the DMG Steak Sauce and Smashed Potatoes with Garlic for one side and Creamed Spinach for the other. I like my steaks THICK and this one was not, but it had a very nice flavor, not from any apparent seasoning, but from being a quality piece of meat. I ordered it medium rare, and it was more toward medium, but not outrageously so. The DMG Steak Sauce was a thinner consistency than I expected, and had a prominent tomato flavor. Overall, the sauce wasn't quite substantial enough to enhance the flavor of the steak. The Creamed Spinach was excellent, and the Smashed Potatoes were very good. Even though I now live in the neighborhood, I haven't visited often enough to be a regular, so I felt a little like an intruder, since it seemed like everyone sitting at the bar knew each other. This was a very enjoyable meal, like others I have had here, and good value for the money, especially considering the obvious quality of the ingredients and cooking. That said, I think my future visits will focus on other menu offerings, and I'll save my steak $ for that noisy place in Rosslyn.
  2. George: "You can't have people sticking their hands into a 600 degree oven!"Kramer: "It's all supervised!" Classic.
  3. I like that Australian something-or-other - the one that's around second or third on the by-the-glass list. Caveat: I don't know anything about wine, but I know what I like.
  4. That's only the double-triple. To get the triple-triple, you also have to get the triple bypass.
  5. The New York-style with sausage, onion, and green pepper I ordered for delivery a couple of weeks ago arrived late and cold. I understand delivery introduces an additional set of variables, but this was a very disappointing experience, especially given their price point.

  7. Remember, the first step toward recovery is admitting you have a problem...
  8. Depending on your definition of a crab cake, I think the Crab Royale might qualify. Regardless, I think she would like it. I had it as part of the Bistro Special a couple of weeks ago, and it was delicious.
  9. The book has been spoken for. Thanks!
  10. I'm sorry, but something has come up and I will not be able to make it. I hope someone else out there can take my place - sounds like it will be a wonderful dinner.
  11. It appears there is room for one more. If that's still the case, I would like to attend.
  12. I have found that the greatest motivation for both exercising and staying on a diet comes after you begin to see results. Stick with it for a couple of weeks; you'll notice that you feel better and your clothes are getting looser, and you'll really be motivated to keep exercising and stick to your diet to continue the process. The problem is sticking with it after you arrive at your target weight/size/marathon time/whatever your personal goal may be, but you can cross that bridge when you come to it. Don't sweat it if you miss some gym time or backslide on your diet a little bit. Think of fitness is a journey, not an event.
  13. I ended up at the Allentown Brew Works, located right smack in the middle of (what passes for) downtown*. Dissapointment right off the bat, when I found out they were out of the Hop Exlposion which I had taken note of on their web site prior to my trip, and which I was really interested in trying, as I come from the "the-hoppier-the-better" school of beer connosseurmanship. After a couple of generously-offered samples, I settled on the Amber Ale which was good, but not quite hoppy enough for my taste. Liked it better than the lager, though. More than a few menu items piqued my interest, including about 10 different sauces (coffee barbecue?) offered with the Buffalo Wings. I asked the very pleasant (but periodically inattentive) bartender to help me decide between the 2500-Degree Griller, (a Buffalo-style chicken sandwich) and the Symphony Hall Ribeye Steak Sandwich. She said it comes down to whether you want chicken or beef, but didn't steer me in either direction. I settled on the Griller, which is a grilled chicken breast brushed with a buffalo wing-style sauce, topped with pepper jack cheese and Jalapeno peppers, and drizzled with blue cheese dressing on a soft Kaiser roll. The sandwich was very tasty and sufficiently spicy, and the side order of coleslaw was outstanding, sweet and very creamy. If you're ever in Allentown (and what are the chances of THAT happening), you could do much worse than the Brew Works. I know, because I have. *Note to A-town city fathers and mothers: If you really want to gentrify this area, which you appear to be trying to do, don't make people feed the meters on Saturdays. You're not quite there yet.
  14. I will be taking a day trip to Allentown next weekend, and I'm looking for a place to eat a late lunch/early dinner. I have been to the area before and have eaten at Gregory's Steakhouse near the airport, and had a hot dog from Yocco's once upon a time. I was thinking of trying the Allentown Brewhouse, but was also hoping I could get some recommendations for some other options. My only constraint is that I don't have a whole lot of time (looking at someplace I can get in and out in about an hour). Thanks!
  15. Welcome, kneelconqueso! To clarify, did you let her know about the overcooked burger and the greasy mac and cheese when you were served, or only after you got the check and were ready to leave?
  16. Here's a lead for Bourdain stalkers: Travel Channel HQ (Discovery Communications) is in downtown Silver Spring... I think Tony should swing by Lot 8 at RFK tomorrow night and tailgate with La Barra Brava!
  17. Flying Dog pale ale, only $6.99 at the Giant in Alexandria Commons on Duke Street, just East of Quaker Lane. Go grab some before they realize its underpriced!

  19. Or, go the other route. I'm envisioning a recreation of the scene in the Chez Paul in The Blues Brothers - "Sell me your children!"
  20. Is it my imagination, or did Teddy's frites look a little bit too well-done on the Food Network show?
  21. Speaking of burgers, I had a tasty one at the game last night. Not 5 Guys, just the standard 1/2 lb. Gourmet Burger sold at the various non-specialty concession stands (I got mine at the one called "Grays Grill"). It was big, hot, juicy, with a fair amount of grease; just the way I like it. Not overcooked, and tasted pretty fresh. Served on a Kaiser roll with a slice of American cheese, slices of raw onion, and a lettuce leaf. $11.00 for the platter, which includes fries.
