  1. Ray's - but its not on the menu. (DR - feel free to delete this end run around the closed Ray's topic).Speaking for myself, I had lunch today at the Dogfish Head Ale House in 7 Corners. Cream of Crab soup was too corn starchy-thick, burger was serviceable (@ $2.00 off), 75-minute IPAs were great, and service from Jessica at the bar was outstanding. (Granted, I was one of about 10 patrons in the entire place, but still...)
  2. The only thing missing from this article is a link to the original FHM photo shoot. Maybe Dan Cole can help us out? cheesecake factory?
  3. I have a craving for Chicago-style deep dish pizza. Anyone know if a decent version exists in the Alexandria/Arlington area? Was thinking Armand's, but it's been ages since I've had one of their pies, and I can't remember if it was any good or not.
  4. Jut wanted to put in a plug for Buzz's brownies. Their Farmhouse Brownie currently comes in second to Balducci's in my own personal local brownie competition. Peanut butter is good, too, as is raspberry.
  5. I was under the impression that, not too long ago, Thai Square was comparable to Bangkok 54, which I have liked the two times I have eaten there (pork belly & larb ). I have been meaning to try Thai Square to judge for myself how the two compare. Should I not bother?
  6. Bobby Short, who also sang the theme song for the "Charlie" perfume commercials.
  7. Since I live a hop-skip-and-a-stagger over the 395 pedestrian footbridge from Shirlington, I figured it was high-time I gave Carlyle another go, after what I remember to be a satisfying meal here a good ten years ago or so. I sat at the bar and received generally good service from a couple of different bartenders. The crowd thinned out somewhat during the 7-9 PM window, but it was never wall-to-wall people; there always seemed to be at least one or two open seats at the bar. I tried both the Carlyle Lager and Carlyle Pale Ale on draft. These are brewed by Dominion, and both were quite bland, with no discernable hop aroma or hop flavor to the ale, and the lager tasting similar to various Anheuser-Busch products I've had over the years. The Deviled Egg appetizer was the highlight, served with strips of crisp maple-flavored bacon. The Miso-Glazed Black Cod entree was perfectly cooked, translucent-white and flaky, but seemed to get most of its flavor from the Miso glaze and not from the fish itself. It was accompanied by an ice cream scoop-sized ball of sticky rice and a small amount of fresh-tasting citrus slaw. The only service glitch to speak of was the lack of bread service. After I inquired, a breadbasket was promptly brought out with apologies. Overall, a good meal and friendly service at a reasonable price, but this place is sorely in need of a serious upgrade to their beer taps.
  8. I no longer live in that neighborhood but when I did, I found the dishes listed in the "Healthy" section of their takeout menu to be quite tasty (and somewhat less guilt-inducing than the more standard fare). It's basically a plate of steamed mixed vegetables to which you can add either chicken, shrimp, or beef. Served with a separate container of brown sauce on the side, so you can season the dish to your taste. The brown sauce itself has a nice consistency (not gloppy) and adds a fair amount of spiciness.
  9. Sorry, I'm just having a little trouble reconciling your criticism of Tim's support of a business whose owners are not the most savory of characters with your own support of a man who has had some questionable associations of his own. You seem to be holding others to a different standard than you do yourself.
  10. I believe that is a non-Winter thing, replaced by the demitasse cups of hot chocolate during the cold weather months. Did you get those?
  11. This certainly does nothing to harm Chef Greenwood's reputation of being consistently intolerant of those with whom she disagrees.
  12. Victory (Downington, PA) Hop Wallop is available (through February) at the Total Wine & More in Landmark Plaza in Alexandria. The bottom of the carton says: "...a silky malt base supports the profound hop character of melon, mint, and pine, adding complexity. 8.5% a.b.v." I'm drinking one right now, and I agree with the bottom of the carton. Clipper City (Baltimore, MD) Loose Cannon Hop3 Ale may also be found there, and will also fill the bill.
  13. It's a very scary time for a lot of folks, but the vast majority of them don't deal with it by shooting up their friends and loved ones. Obviously, this character had to be severely unbalanced to begin with.
  14. I remember calling in to Post-Haste to listen to samples of bands whose CDs were reviewed in the Weekend section. I am forever indebted to it for helping me decide to buy the Bill Holman Band's "Brilliant Corners" Monk tribute CD, which became one of my all-time faves.
  15. I have never had bad service at Ray's, but tonight it was superb. So many different people helped me with wine, dessert, etc. that I was made to feel like I was the only person in the place (which, believe me, was definitely NOT the case). Tonight, the place hummed like a particluarly well-oiled machine, with Michael watching over it all like a hawk. Or a mother hen. Or a mother hawk-hen. Now for the food: This was my first visit since the introduction of the "butcher cuts" menu supplement. As much as I'm in the tank for the House Special, I forced myself to branch out tonight and try the NY Strip "Bertolucci". The marrow adds a rich, decadent touch to an already superb cut of beef. I didn't think of this until after I ordered, but the fact that this was probably my "last tango" at Ray's until the iminent move to the new digs made this selection all the more appropriate. I look forward to the new digs, but tonight's experience will always leave me with a warm memory of the Ray's that was.
  16. Well, either I've got one person fooled or you haven't read any of my posts!
  17. Yeah... what restaurant is this thread about?
  18. Or, the opposite, such as I encountered at the Shirlington Capitol City Brew Pub last night. When I asked about the seriously truncated one-page dinner menu, I was told that it was their "inauguration menu", created to help streamline service. Obviously a corporate decision geared specifially toward the downtown DC locations; Shirlington was pretty dead last night. But that's what I get for going to Cap City, I guess (although the service was friendly and the IPA was good).
