  1. Strolled in (for the first time since their remodel) last night and I have to say it's a crime that this place is empty during peak happy hour times on a Thursday. The tweaked space is low key and the staff were extremely accommodating (offering sample pours of any beer I had questions about). They have a solid lineup on draft (multiple Great Lakes offerings, wide range of seasonal beers from Harpoon, Anchor, etc) and EVERY DRAFT IS HALF PRICE FROM 430-7. I paid 4 bucks for an Ommegang Abbey ale, and 3 dollars apiece for an anchor christmas ale and Great Lakes Eliot Ness. I should also note that I was one of about 6 people in the entire bar at 6pm. I didn't have time to sample the food but their menu looks more than adequate. I will certainly be returning since it is down the street from my office, but if you're in the Glover Park/Upper Georgetown area I would say it is worth your consideration.
  2. I've had good success using the recipe from Cooks Illustrated.
  3. Thank you to Dan for organizing and to the fine folk at American Flatbread for being such gracious hosts. It was nice to meet a few new Rockwellians and as always, good food and good conversation made for an all around enjoyable evening. I, for one, will be returning, it is my hope that the members of the board (and by extension their friends/colleagues) who have yet to try give it a chance...I am certain you will leave impressed.
  4. Also, just realized that I still had the maybe +1, its a definite +1 now. Sorry about that. Looking forward to this evening!
  5. Clearly my brain doesn't switch on until coffee #2...thanks...
  6. I may be blind but I didn't see a start time above (I apologize if it's there). What time should I shoot to be there by?
  7. So I've been living in my condo (Cleveland Park) for over a year and I'm finally getting around to a bunch of small projects around the house, one of which is having a backsplash put in my galley kitchen. It's been redone (granite counters, new cabinets, etc) but for whatever reason they opted to leave the walls above the counters exposed. Does anyone have any recommendations for both the design (since to say I am not good at picking materials/designs is a gross understatement) and installation of a backsplash?
  8. It's my understanding that they're the festbier's. They are produced more quickly than the Marzen specifically to handle the volume required during Oktoberfest (at least that is my understanding). The Hofbrau version is actually my favorite.
  9. I believe (schedule permitting) I can do this. It'll probably be just me, but if work permits I will be bringing the +1 as well. I would be on board with the local ham and brie flatbread, it sounds delicious. Although I am a fan of their other offerings as well.
  10. Target, Walmart, Kmart or any such big box type store should have them as well.
  11. I actually left DCCK with blisters from the "knives" (using that term loosely as they were so dull) after that session
  12. As a last minute plea, it looks like I'm going to lose a battle to reschedule a proposed meeting that I can't miss today that will last until 6 . If there is anyone here that can pick up my spot, I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, I will do my best to get there, even if a bit late.
  13. I had missed the thread you reference (and upon a review, I can see where you are coming from). I am only arguing the point regarding something small/tangible to a potential donor vs. a large coordinated effort that visibly has many supporters and how that would elicit different reactions or support mechanisms.
  14. I'm curious to know where restaurant A was admonished? Maybe I missed it? If you think my point is that I'm chastising the restaurant b/c it is donating to a cause that is "gianormous", meaning the restaurant would profit off it, you are missing the mark. My point is that the Haiti cause (or any other large cause) is supported by a large portion of the population (not just restaurants) via many different means (cell phone donations, etc etc). DCCK, b/c it is much smaller and local has a much smaller base of support, which makes me more likely to go support it b/c I have a personal attachment to it and the community it serves. In all honesty (and I'm only speaking for myself), you can take restaurants completely out of the equation and my point would still apply.
  15. To me it has to do with scope. DCCK is something tangible that impacts my community. I volunteer there and can register the faces/names of people the vandalism has an impact on, which makes me much more inclined to go to a restaurant with the intention of donating to the cause (vs. going to the restaurant b/c I like it, which I often do at both Dino and Rays). I'm not saying by any means that the Haiti event was not legitimate, it was. However, I think comparing the two is flawed based on scale.
  16. My recommendation would be to hit up Carpool in Ballston. The weather on Sunday is supposed to be decent and I've certainly seen Eagles fans in there previously. While it won't be like Rhino, meaning packed wall to wall with Eagles fans, it's a pretty good experience for watching the game esp. if you can grab one of the outdoor tables (they swing a bunch of TV's out so they face the outside seating).
  17. DC Central Kitchen Vans Vandalized I hope karma pays whoever did this back in spades. Sign me up for the 4th.
  18. I also recently had the Weyerbacher (in the interest of full disclosure, I grew up in the town where it's brewed so I have an affinity for their product) Imperial Pumpkin and thought it was really good. I'd compare it to the Schlafly.
  19. I've been trying to find this around (albeit I haven't searched very hard). Where have you seen / bought it? ETA:Found it at Whole Foods in Glover Park today as well.
  20. Had my first pit beef experience this past Saturday for lunch. Ordered the beef sandwich which like above, was ordered rare but was closer to medium. Some raw onion, some tiger sauce, and a generous dollop of horseradish and this was quite a tasty sandwich. It was a beautiful day to sit outside in the shadow of the gold club next door and was very easily accessible from our Mt. Vernon hotel which is why we chose Chaps over the other pit beef staples. I will have to return to Bmore to check out the rest.
  21. Stopped in last night specifically for the fall pizza and just like last year, I feel like this pizza hits it out of the park. Had the house ground sausage on half and it was an excellent addition (although the pizza doesn't need it). The crust here reminds me of the deli style you'll find across the north east (philly burbs, etc). Nice crisp to the bottom with a nice chew at the end. It's not fair to compare this to 2 amy's or Orso's dough but I'd definitely put it a few steps above what is available at Paradiso. The peaches and cream desert looked awesome, but I was too stuffed after wolfing down half the large pizza and a hennepin.
  22. They're in Tenleytown (Wisconsin and River Rd) today so I had a chance to sample their wares (a coworker picked one up for me) and I have to admit, even after a 20 minute trek back to the office it was quite the treat. The role was still warm and crusty with buttery goodness and the filling offered the barest hint of mayo among the copious amount of claw/tail meat. It very much reminded me of lobster rolls I used to eat in Maine when I was a kid, and thats perhaps the best compliment I can give them. Hopefully they return to the area.
  23. In NW DC I'd go with: New Heights Dino The bar at Palena The above are all off the redline (Woodley Park for New Heights, Cleveland Park for Dino, Palena) If you're not constrained by the metro I'd also suggest: BlackSalt (although you're probably heading up towards the top of your price range if I remember correctly) SushiKo
  24. This perfectly sums up why I've stopped reading Tom's chats. At the end of the day, I don't care what the anonymous masses have to say, I'm there to get his opinion (it is what he's paid to do after all) on restaurants in and around DC. His chat has simply devolved into a forum for those with axes to grind to vent or for those who refuse to admit that a restaurant by its very nature needs to cater to more than just ME ME ME.
