  1. I think the idea of "3" might be the way to go. I've always found it to be laid back and the food offerings to be solid with an excellent selection of suds.
  2. My feeling is that this comes across as just that, a conceit. Logic (to me) would seem to dictate that you would want to open a restaurant in as close to a perfect environment as possible, knowing there are going to be hiccups regardless,...a pop-up restaurant in NYC hardly seems to be that. I really like RJ's food and I look forward to trying R24 when it opens, but this all seems a bit much (both the "test" in a place where things were more than likely to not run smoothly and the hubbub around it)
  3. Noticed on the way home that there was a "Jetties Express" sign in the window. Stopped in and they have what looked like the majority of Jetties sandwich / salad menu available there in addition to all the ice cream / cakes / cupcakes. Had an "Altar Rock" salad - roast turkey, bacon, blue cheese, chick peas, and cherry tomatoes over greens with a side of ranch that hit the spot.
  4. Stopped in for brunch (didn't realize they served both Saturday and Sunday brunch) this morning with the +1. At 1130 we were two of the first customers in the place and were immediately greeted and seated, even though we were 30 min early for our reservation. She started off with some elderflower / champagne cocktail and I had an Antigoon, both of which were good...I tend to get the Antigoon whenever I'm there b/c while a bit pricey at 10 bucks, its a terrific beer. To kick off the eating we split an order of mussels with mushrooms and truffle cream. This was tremendous and I would highly recommend it. The plump mussels were perfectly cooked and worked very well with the earthy flavors of the mushrooms. I followed that with an order of scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and creme fraiche which were fine although I had ordered a side of pork belly bacon that was out of this world, so maybe they were overshadowed by that. The +1 had their version of eggs benedict which she enjoyed (enough so that I didn't get to steal a bite). All in all, a great (if pricey) spot for a Saturday brunch. Today I used the LivingSocial ($30 for $60) which blunted the tab nicely.
  5. Maybe try Bruce at Westover Market ?
  6. Looks like they are starting brunch service this Sunday (10:30 - 2:30) according to their Facebook and Twitter feeds (additionally, I was talking to the host(s) on Saturday for lunch and they mentioned it).
  7. Tickets sold out in about 20 minutes I believe (sadly, I was stuck in a meeting and missed the opportunity).
  8. From the "Flip Burger" website, it looks like he's the "Creative Director", working for whomever actually owns the small group of burger joints (it appears they have 4 locations so I'd guess that is what Tom referred to). I would assume he would look to open his own more upscale dining place with the funds.
  9. I stopped by Boccato in Clarendon (right across from the Whole Foods) and picked up some Stumptown Bolivia Buenavista beans. It was my first stop in there and while the space is pretty crowded (between the gelatto and coffee bar) it appeared the beans had been roasted pretty recently and they produced an excellent cup of coffee out of the french press this am. At 13 bucks a lb maybe its a big of an indulgence, but I'm thinking a return visit to sample some of the other Stumptown beans is probably in order. Instead of lb I meant 12oz bag
  10. Dave, welcome to Cleveland Park! Very happy to have you in the 'hood and will be stopping by soon to check out the new digs (I've been truant in seeing the new space).
  11. If you'd be willing to hold another I would 100% be interested.
  12. What recipe did you use for this (as I salivate on my keyboard)...I have some greek friends who love pastitsio and would love to upstage them
  13. I had booked a reservation for New Heights last night, not thinking about restaurant week. I would highly recommend heading there as around 745 pm our table of 4 was one of about 5 in the dining room. Service was excellent, the environment low key, and the food was excellent. Taking a quick look at opentable it appears they have a good amount of availability this Friday.
  14. While I agree that the behavior of the chef you pointed out via the link is poor, its poor to the restaurants other staff. I don't know if I'd include that in a comparison on childish behavior directed towards patrons. While both are certainly negatives, I think they probably merit discussion separately.
  15. The Oarsman Ale was at Cleveland Park Liquors as of yesterday...
  16. Stopped by the bar for a quick lunch. Sampled the Oliver's E.S.B. and the Victory Yakima Glory to go with one of the pizzas (topped with Gorgonzola/bacon/onions). The beers were excellent but the pizza was just average. Very little taste in the crust, it served as only a vessel for the tiny bit of gorgonzola, bacon that could've been a tad more crisp, and onions drizzled with a balsamic reduction. The bartenders were very pleasant and there were only about 3 others at the bar when I stopped in at 2:30. It's not a place I'd make my plans around going to, but for a late lunch it served the purpose today as I was in courthouse running errands.
  17. There are many different reasons I enjoy this site, but I must admit across the last year I have always looked forward to these semi-monthly posts...they will be missed next year. Thank you Jeff (and a Happy Holidays to you and yours) for providing such an interesting look into your vineyard/life.
  18. I couldn't access the site from the office all day, but obviously can access it now.
  19. I took my gf to Palena last night to celebrate her birthday. It was my both of our first visits (I had previously eaten in the cafe) and I have to say, this was probably the best meal I've had in DC (I have yet to dine at Komi or some of the other places that routinely are mentioned as the best restaurants in the city...but if they're better than I guess I'd better start saving...) and up there in the "best meals I've had period" discussion. We each had the 5 course tasting menu and every course from start to finish was knee knockingly good. I won't go course by course simply b/c I don't know if I can do them justice and I didn't take a picture of the menu or anything, but the highlights were the chestnut soup with scallop and the shoat with apple jus. Also worth mentioning were the cocktails we started the meal off with. She had their fall sparkler (pumpkin juice, sparking wine) and I their Manhatten. My Manhatten was perfect in every way (I could eat a bucket of their soaked cherries) and I was left to assume the fall sparkler was good as well as it disappeared before I had a chance to request a sip. I found the service to be excellent, although the staff apologized numerous times that they were "just getting their legs with the new setup"...kudos to them b/c if this is them in an adjustment stage, I can't imagine what service is like once they hit their stride. This back room experience will probably remain reserved for special occasions (as much as I wish I was flush enough to drop 300+ on a regular weeknight or weekend), however as someone who lives a block away I look forward to returning and spending time in the expanded cafe.
  20. Heading to NYC the weekend of December 10th (the SO has never been to NYC during the holidays and I finally gave in). I know the city will be a made house, particularly b/c we will be hitting the tourist traps that are the Rockefellar tree and all of the surrounding holiday trappings. That said, I'm driving in early in the morning and will be heading out of the city around 9 or 10. As is normally my MO, (travelling in from eastern PA / NJ) I will probably hop on the ferry in Weehawken and jump off in midtown. Any recommendations for lunch / dinner options that aren't a 40 dollar cab right away from everything would be very much appreciated. Would love a spot with decent beer for lunch and anything is fair game (from casual to fancy) for dinner...but I legitimately have no clue what my options are since its been awhile since I've done the midtown (or anything out of the Bronx for that matter) thing.
  21. Excellent time as usual last night. Possibly the largest group of folks I've ever seen for the co-op shift (including the 12 Rockwellians). A special thank you to Sparkycom both for the delicious break time treats and the sharp knives! A great way to start off the holiday week.
