  1. We went on Friday, and let me just say, it’s a good thing I don’t have a Yelp account. This was one of the most miserable dining experiences I have ever been a part of. My parents visited this past weekend, and every time they come we always go to Guapo’s. I tried to change things up after hearing some positive reviews about Plaza Del Sol, but it couldn’t have been a worse decision. First of all, the place was crazy loud. Low ceilings, no sound insulation – parents were not happy from the start. My dad orders tamales as an appetizer, and just a minute later, our entrees arrived. None of us were thrilled about that, so then we asked them to take the food back so we could actually eat our first course. After we had enough time to actually enjoy our tamales (which were so-so), we then got our entrees. Rachel and I split the “fajitas for two”, but honestly, the portions were for one person at best. Our waitress would give us new dishes after wiping them down with a wet rag she was carrying around right in front of us. Felt like I was eating at a crappy diner. On top of that, they forgot to bring the rice with the fajitas (not sure how you forget that), so they gave us one small dish which was gone within minutes. She then brought us more rice, only by scraping the contents off the old dish into the new one right in front of me! Meanwhile my mom barely touched her depressing-looking salad. Tomatoes looked old, the lettuce was limp, and it just didn't look appetizing at all. The whole experience was a disaster, especially the service. They discounted our bill which was nice, but it left such a bad taste in my mouth that we’ll probably never go there again. Rarely have such negative reviews like this but felt this was worth the write-up.
  2. Finally got around to writing up our meal at Little Serow. I was a fan of the bold flavors sans the curry, just too strong for me. Everything else was great, though the ped grapao was my favorite dish of the evening. Excellent service and inviting atmosphere. Sorry about the lack of pics! 3. We split a small tomato with mozzarella as well as a white clam pie on opening day last week. Preferred the latter over the former. Thin, crispy crust that worked much better with the clam pizza, but the tomato/mozzarella was rather bland. Place is really loud and for a bar area that calls themselves "Bar Haven", the beer list is really disappointing. Will come back in a few weeks and see if it's improved any, but as of now, I still prefer Pete's.
  4. We went last week on a Wednesday. Got there around 6 and was able to get a table for four around 7:45. The ped grapao with fried duck egg was probably my favorite course, but I really enjoyed everything outside of the om gapi baan (shrimp curry soup). It was just too strong for my taste buds, but other than that, it was well worth the money spent. I love the minimalist atmosphere as well as the friendly, welcoming staff. It doesn't even feel like you're in DC when you step inside. Will hopefully write a post about it soon, but with no pics, it's not nearly as fun. Bottom line, I'd definitely go back.
  5. Bell's Hopslam. Yes, this brew is overhyped but it's certainly delicious, especially if you're a hophead. Already buzzed since it's a whopping 10%.
  6. Man, I would totally go to this but we already have plans that evening. Sounds like an incredible deal. Keep up the good work, Jeff. We're huge fans of your beer list. Btw, any plans to put Lagunitas Sucks on tap anytime soon?
  7. The wife went to Fiola a few weeks ago with a few of her girlfriends and she has been raving about it since. She can't stop talking about how amazing the lobster ravioli was, let alone the dates stuffed with fois gras wrapped in prosciutto. Now I really want to go, badly. We wrote up more about it here: http://www.dmvdining.com/2011/12/fiola-shines-in-penn-quarter/
  8. Congrats to Ferhat on making the Top 10 Restaurant Openings of 2011! http://www.washingtonian.com/blogarticles/restaurants/bestbites/22024.html
  9. Checked it out on Wednesday evening before heading over to the UMD bball game (which might become a ritual since I enjoyed my meal so much). Love the concept as well as the location. I ordered the grilled hake with spicy aioli and it was simply delicious. Very fresh ingredients, can't wait to try out some of the other menu items on our next visit. Can read more about it here - http://www.dmvdining.com/2011/12/fishnet-from-corduroy-to-college-park/
  10. We went a few weeks ago and loved it. We've done takeout with them twice in the past, but this was our first time dining in. I could eat three plates of the Chicken 65, it's such a great dish if you're a fan of spice. The Baingan Bharta was the favorite amongst the table, though I really enjoyed the flavors of the Sarson wali Gobhi as well. Wrote up more about it here - http://www.dmvdining.com/2011/12/masala-art-a-taste-of-india-in-uptown-dc/
  11. Has anyone been to their pop-up Italian nights yet? We were very impressed not only with the quality of the food, but with the very reasonable prices. My veal saltimbocca, which was delicious btw, was only $18. They've done it four times already, and I'd certainly go back. Here's more on our experience.
  12. Went back to Freddy's for happy hour tonight - it was the first time I've eaten there since they first opened (been a few times just for drinks). First off, the Clams and Can happy hour special is an exceptional deal. Loved the whole belly clams, and you certainly get your money's worth as my box was full to the brim. The wife and I also split the RW special for dinner. The lobster roll was excellent and was overflowing with meat. It was a vast improvement from when we first went, and it easily knocks Mussel Bar's out of the park. It had just a hint of lemon which was a nice touch while the bun was lightly toasted. $15 for this PLUS a clam chowder? Helluva deal. Also, I cannot overstate how great the beer selection is. It truly is the best in Bethesda and the prices are very, very fair. Then you throw in the dollar off bottles and cans during happy hour and it's an absolute steal. Sad to learn that Racer 5 was out of stock, but no matter, Boulder Beer's Hazed and Confused was more than adequate (and only four bucks!). Freddy's is easily becoming our favorite happy hour spot. Next time we'll have to get Gillian's fried chicken or the whole lobster. Keep up the great work!
  13. We went to their soft opening last night. "Wow" is one way to describe it. I have a feeling they will be doing very well in the neighborhood - prime location, huge space, expansive menu, etc. Staff was very accommodating - handing out complimentary beer and wine to guests waiting in the long lines. For a place that was stuffed to the brim with people, it didn't take us extraordinarily long for our food to arrive. Oh, and they have Natty Boh ON TAP. Our party of four was very happy with the food and service. i.e., I ordered a side of mashed potatoes, didn't show up. I tell the waiter, told me they ran out, then he comes back with a fresh order of french fries. Nice touch. You can read more about it in our post we just published over at the blog: http://www.dmvdining.com/2011/06/first-look-tackle-box-cleveland-park/
  14. Went to Freddy's on Saturday after we read it was open right here on DR. Love, love, love the beer selection. Reasonably priced for Montgomery County standards. It's not very often you find Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout on tap, and for $6, I couldn't have been happier. Here's hoping they start some sort of Happy Hour during the week. As for the food, I was pretty excited about the clam strips, but what I got were a handful of small strips overshadowed by a ton of onion rings. On top of that, some of the clams were lukewarm, and I told our waiter as well as the host about them and they said they would pass it onto the chef. Again, it was the first day they were open so I'll cut them some slack, but they definitely need to fix the proportion of clams to onion rings/fries - and make sure they're hot! This place has promise as it's in a great location and was getting busy just from all the people walking by Cordell Ave. Looking forward to coming back, especially at the bar.
