Honestly, I had GREAT Korean food in New York on Thursday in Little Korea. I hope the restaurant you choose next is 100% better than the last one which was subpar at best.

Hmmm, that's going to be a great shock to the Koreans in the neighborhood who eat there. :) ..where in Little Korea did you happen to eat? I've spent some time there (obviously) and I'd really like to know...if there's a place I've been missing, I want to go.

I went with a Korean. I'll find out the name & address... The servers all wore green aprons. What I loved about the food was the fresheness and quality. It was some of the best, if not best, bim bim bop I have had. Plus the Kim Chee was extremely fresh and tasty.

The last place we went for Korean with DR.com was a great Korean steak place... the other dishes were not that great (in my opinion) and I was reminded of the experience last week in New York.

While I find bibimbap to be a very nice dish, it's a long way from the pinnacle of Korean food. I can take you to Super H and introduce you to a bibim bap that will make you forget about any other...Kimchi on the other hand, is one of those things like Sazerac, bleu cheeses and brie, is an acquired taste. I prefer my kimchi somewhat young and crunchy, others like more mature, saltier, more limp etc...some of the best kimchi you will ever eat comes from a tiny snackbar in Annandale (and I've eaten kimchi from here to NY to Seoul)...again, YMMV. Korean food is like any other food, you like most what you're most familiar with. (oops, ending my sentence with a preposition?) Anyway, I hope you will come along for the next Korean dinner. This one is going to be smaller in scope than the first one. This time everyone knows that the dishes will be spicy, the only non-spicy food will be the panchan and there will be no holds barred.

Hmm, not sure what you mean by steak place. Koreans really don't eat steak, they do eat bulgogi. The great thing about Korean (and a lot of other nationalities) is that there is always something that you will find tasty and memorable and other things that you can definitely put on the do not eat list (for me, I can pass on sea cucumber, my better half disagrees)...

I'm in for a bit of spice
Welcome Scott...

I think for the next cheap Tuesday night pig-out, Grover and I would like to have no more than about 5 to 10 people total. That way we can explore the spicy side of Korean cooking, Grover can talk about the dish, give a bit of history, and then we can compare Scoville ratings and go to the next dish. I don't want anyone to feel left out but large groups make it extremely difficult to have lots of interaction, see reactions and discover likes and dislikes. If there are enough people, we'll just divide into two or three groups and go on different Tuesday nights. Sound reasonable?

Okay, here is the list:

Scott J.

Dean Gold

StephenB

Cucas87

Grover and Escoffier

Shogun

Legant

AlDente

PerriK

You have some time to decide which Tuesday night you'd like to go to dinner. Grover and I will be in Watkins Glen this weekend but next Tuesday or any Tuesday that the majority can attend is fine with us. If you want to go and your name isn't on the list, PM me and I'll add you to the next Tuesday we do this.

We have theater tickets the next 2 Tuesdays so the 27th is the first Tuesday we are available.

We are going to see Assassins twice at the Signature! No, I'm not Sondheim obsessed.... I only saw Assassins twice on Broadway and we are going to see Sweeney Todd for the third time with Michael Cervaris (which will be our 9th overall time seeing it!).

Next Tuesday (13 June) won't work for me, but thereafter my schedule is clear at the moment. (although after reading Sarah Vowell's Assasination Vacation, I'm pretty tempted to get tickets for Assassins too!)

Which Korean place are we spiceheads invading?

Starting to sound like Dean may have picked the correct date (June 27). Not sure exactly where we are going yet...Grover is gathering menus to get the best representative food...

June 27 is fine with me.
That's 2 for June 27...everyone else good with that date? If this fit's everybody's plans, we'll start doing serious restaurant research...we're looking for food on the upper ranges of the Scoville range...beware!!

No allergies here, but I do want to put in a special request - or grovel, if you prefer - for a really good squid (or cuttlefish or octopus) dish somewhere in the final mix.
It goes without saying that there will be nakji bokum somewhere in the mix and it will be spicy I promise...(it also happens to be one of my favorites)...

Oh gawd! What trouble did I get myself into this time??!! I'm going to Costco to replenish my supply of Pepto Bismol. Should I get enough for the whole group?

You might want to consider buying the 55 gallon family size...

Only for wimps.... Last time I was at Joe's Noodle House I asked for the Dry Spicy Beef "really hot" and it was so Ma La tht I could not feel the carbonation in the last few sips of my beer! Now that's hot!!

On second thought, buy several of those 55-gallon drums of Pepto. You can lay down a pink trail from the Beltway to the chosen restaurant so Dean doesn't get lost in the NoVa wilderness again. I am so craving kimchee and pork soup right now...

Hey Dean, when are you organizing the $20 Tuesday at Joe's Noodle House?

Our new Canon PowerShot has macro mode, so I should be able to get some good food porn shots at the dinner. Escoffier, do you think any of the places would have a problem with a little bit of photography?

I don't think you'll have any problem at all...they may even pose for you...along with the food.

Okay, here's the scoop:

In honor of Korea's Red Devils tie with France today in the Coupe Mondial, we have selected Gom Ba Woo to hold this Korean Red Devil Dinner on June 27. The theme is going to be devilishly spicy Korean food. The cost will be slightly over $20 each (covers all food but not tax and tip). Of course for $20 you won't be getting alcohol but you will get all the bori-cha and ice water you can hold. (You may need a lot). This dinner will not be for the faint of heart. It is going to start spicy and advance to SPICY.

Please PM me and confirm your vaunted presence. Again the location:

Gom Ba Woo

7133-C Columbia Pike

Annandale, VA 22003

June 27, 2006 at 7:00pm (or 1900 if you use the 24 hour clock)

Korean soccer shirts are optional but, if you have 'em wear 'em...

Gom Ba Woo, how cool is that? Click

Have you booked the entire restaurant? If not, then maybe you consider it (i.e., strongly consider it).

This is a great place dudes - worth the trek to Annandale, and I mean that if Koreatown is ground-zero for Korean food, then Gom Ba Woo is ground-zero of Koreantown. It's only two blocks off of Little River Turnpike, but this is about as far removed from Washington, DC in spirit as Oz is from Kansas.

Cheers,

Rocks.

Are you suggesting that we open this to around 40 people, Mr Rocks? If there is enough interest (and it has to be quick, the 27th is rapidly approaching) I suppose we could entertain 38 of our closest friends. It's located here: Gom Ba Woo

The problem I see is this: If any restaurant merits 40 people, it's Gom Ba Woo, but 40 people would overwhelm the place, don't you think? I'm certain there's only one cook in the kitchen. Maybe you could call and see how many they can comfortably serve at one sitting? I fear the quality will decline if too many descend on it at once, and that the homestyle aspect of the cooking (this is basically one seriously talented person stir-frying with a wok) will be compromised.

Oh the wonders and joys of having a wife who not only is a great cook but also speaks fluent Korean. After a hurried phone call, we were informed that 30 could be handled with no problem. (She said that they have handled up to 50 at one time but I think that is a tactical nightmare and should be avoided at all cost). So, here's the proposition. If thirty people express serious interest in dinner at Gom Ba Woo, we will call and reserve 99% of the restaurant for Tuesday the 27th. if only 29 express interest, we'll do our original plan and only take groups of 10-12 at a time. Therefore, if you're interested in getting together with a lot of fellow masochists and seeing if you can eat food that might be a bit spicy, let me know via PM.

Escoffier & Grover accept no responsibility for your heartburn, indigestion or numbed tastebuds for this. This is a celebration of the Korean Red Devils tie with France and the World Cup (which will probably be on the TV if there's a game that night)...bring your Korean/English dictionary.

You can count me in of course. I hope people don't think the object of the meal is a high scoville rating. As Escoffier and Grover know well, spiciness is best when it enhances the taste of food. Some might think this is a test of their machismo. If that is the case, they might as well stay home and swig tabasco. I know that is not the way you planned the meal, but if you look over some of the posts, it's possible to get that impression. What we are going to have is excellent Korean food with the flavors skillfully brought out by spiciness. That is exactly what I am looking forward to.

Mr B, I couldn't have said it better myself. Naturally, spiciness happens to be a very important part of Korean cooking/cuisine. The spiciness is used to both enhance the taste of the dishes as well as serve the important function of making you cool in the hot Korean summer. Therefore, in honor of the weather of the last couple of days, the great play of the Korean footballers and the fact that someone once made the dubious claim that the food that was served at Han Sung Oak wasn't spicy we have designed this dinner to explore the more spicy side of the cuisine. HOWEVER, the food CAN BE SPICY. Please don't overlook that fact. We're not going to serve habaneros as appetizers I promise but it's not going to be brain frying either (well, maybe just a bit). Gom Ba Woo is a very small, homey place, there are 4 or 5 people who cook, clean, wash dishes, prep food, serve and in general, take care of their customers. They go out of their way to make sure that the mee-guk who show up are well taken care of...and I can guarantee you, we will be well fed and aglow with that special spicy warmth after this dinner...

If you are on this list and cannot attend, please PM me and let me know. If you aren't on the list and want to come, please PM me as well. Gom Ba Woo can take care of around 30 of us at one time so that's the limit. See my earlier message about costs. The food will be spicy, that I guarantee but it's not a test. If you enjoy spicy food, you will definitely enjoy this dinner.

Thanks in advance!

What time is dinner tonight and how do we get to this place, specifically from DC...oh, and do we have a menu yet
Dinner is at 7:00 at Gom Ba Woo and Grover got caught in one of those work things and hasn't had time to post the menu. Trust me, you should like the food. There will be enough variety for almost anyone.

Here is the location: Gom Ba Woo . The address is 7133 Columbia Pike in Annandale 22003 in case you have any problems with the map.

As a quickie synopsis: to get to Gom Ba Woo you can either travel 495 towards Richmond, get off at Little River Turnpike east. Go 4 stoplights (or until you see Fuddruckers on your left. After the 4th light, you will see a Giant on your left. Turn left at the Giant and go to the end of the strip mall. Gom Ba Woo is on your right at the end of the mall.

or

From DC, take 395 South. Get off at Little River Turnpike (Rt 236 West - Duke Street). Go west on Little River Turnpike to John Marr Drive (should be the 5th stoplight). Turn right on John Marr Drive. Take the first left. You will pass the Post Office on your left. Just past the PO on your left is the strip mall where Gom Ba Woo is located. It will be the first restaurant you come to on the Columbia Pike side of the strip mall.
