  1. I had a bunch of issue getting high res picture down to 2 Meg. Here are some pics, ask me any questions and hope to share a magazine article soon with pro picture of the kitchen.
  2. I think the Misen knife compares very well with the big deal German knives. Too soon to talk about durability but it feels great in the hand and seems well balanced.
  3. It is all personal preference. I lean towards an 8" knife over a 10". Recently bought several Misen knives on Kickstarter and am just starting to use them. I tend to have many knives as I have a large kitchen and have room for several folks to be working at once. And I would not hand a guest a 10" knife. When I was assisting at L'Academie de Cuisine, students were given 8" knives for the non-professional classes.
  4. Heading to NY in November with my wife to see Kinky Boots. I am pretty sure we want to eat in the 530 time frame for an 8pm show as opposed to eating later then 10pm. Esca comes to mind as close by to both the show and our hotel. Any other recommendations would be appreciated before I jump on reservation next week (30 days in advance). I've ruled out Craft and Grammercy Tavern as we really want to be in walking distance and close by show if possible. Recs for Sunday Brunch would be great as well. We'll probably walk the Highline and willing to go fairly far for a good brunch.
  5. Not sure why O'learys does not have a thread here and shame on me as I have been here a few times. Had the pleasure of a Wine Maker dinner here last night arranged by the owner Wil Peterson and Dawn Carpenter from Wines Cellars of Annapolis. Suffice it to say that we were blown away by the food the chef put out. Pork Belly with a Mle Sauce put me close to a food coma. O'learys is a pretty space, close to the water and specializing in seafood. Dinner started with a Scallop with pesto done perfectly. Every dish was paired with wine and it was a perfect evening. Wil Peterson took ownership of O'Learys last year and he has just hired a great chef to raise the bar even higher. Annapolis hits it's stride once all the tourists have left and is really back to the locals once the boat shows in October have passed. Should be raised to Italic, highly recommended
  6. We just joined SAMs after having been Costco members for the past 15 years. Our biggest reason for joining is distance. Sams is in Annapolis and Costco isn't. Stuff for the most part is comparable or even the same, Stacey's pita chips as an example. Costco service is much better.
  7. Barry You should check out the Easport Kitchen for your research. Small joint as you describe with great food and vibe. Mark
  8. This blog is very positive. Now to decide which model. Or is it which Model Amazon can deliver by Friday!!
  9. Anyone taken the plunge and purchased a Coravin. I'm on the fence but real close to pulling the trigger. From a splash of dessert wine where there is no way we would consume the bottle to the ability to take some pours from bottles I have without having to consume the entire bottle. Seems like a great solution.
  10. Take out Crab Cakes from Wild Country in Eastport has been excellent the past two weekends. They are large, and mostly if not all lump. Very tasty both baked as well as pan fried.
  11. Adams Ribs in Eastport surprised me with a very good crab cake last night. I was told they make them on premise every day and it tasted like what they said. Paired very well with a half rack of ribs. Didn't hurt that we sailed from 5-9 and were famished when we got there.
  12. I have docked overnight several times at Watermans. One time was planned and the other was avoiding a nasty storm. Great place.
  13. Like the difference between solid white and chunk tuna. The last time I had backfin crabcakes was the last time I will, close to cat food. I suspect backfin will be good in soup, maybe tacos where it can be hidden.
  14. I just spoke to a friend who has a sailboat down there. He recommended the Solomons Victorian Inn as a Top notch B&B with a great location and view.
  15. For sailing in that area Sail Solomon's is a sailing school where you can take a 2 day intro to sailing class. Nothing says Maryland like summer sailing on the bay. I know Herrington Harbor has an Inn, reasonable nature walking and the Orange Crush at their bar, Mangos, rate highly.

    Crab Cakes

Living in Annapolis now I can say that ambiance can make a crab cake taste better. Pirate's cove in Gailsville has great cakes, especially if you come via boat. Hoping to go up to Mike's this weekend, heard they have good crabcakes and crabs. Hemmingways on Kent Island is good as well and the sunset is spectacular.
  17. I have seen several folks crabbing in our creek which is off the south river. They seems to be using a long chicken line and are successful as getting a few dozen after an hour or so.
  18. Ate at FF Tysons. Menu is all over the place and uninspired. I had the crab cakes, no lump crab in there though advertised as lump with no filler.
  19. I eat at Founding Farmers on occasion when someone else arranges to buy me a meal there. In fact I'll be there next Monday night and try to eat sensibly and well. Sort of like Chef Geoff's same food different location.
  20. Pictures coming soon but finally using kitchen. Learning where to put everything and how to find it again is a chore. Same with refrigerator as we chose a 36 subzero but split refrig into an upper door and two lower drawers. I doubt my mother in law, 87 years old, who is visiting in two weeks will be able to open the door. So far have only used the cooktop a few times but will say that these are huge hot burners. Anyone who claims 18K or 20K isn't enough is nuts. That high and you'll burn food quickly unless you are boiling water. Cooked Paella for 8 using what I believe was an 18" pan and it was great. Really liked having a low simmer so I could walk away from stove and great guests.
  21. Hoping to post pictures as soon as Paint and floor are done. Very happy with design and installation. Cooking on big gas burners is great so far(tried once) but I am still learning how to organize drawers and refrigerator. Our Refrigerator has two refrigerator drawers below the door as a full size stainless door would have been too heavy. Biggest problem so far is that the island is about 16' long and it is like running track to go from stove to eating end.
  22. living in Annapolis Thursday thru Monday and most recently without a kitchen has given me a chance to try a lot of places. I owe a write up of Eastport Kitchen which was really good, Soul which was soul less, as well as a few others. And the Ebbtide, a local dive with great burgers, which is like Cheers.
  23. Been to Level in Annapolis 3 times in the past two weekends and my wife and I are convinced this is the best small plates restaurant in the Annapolis area. Large and crowded but we have been able to snag reservations on consecutive Friday nights. Place isn't quiet and adult oriented. I.E. I didn't see any children or really children friendly food. Small but great list of curated cocktails. My wife had a pair of Gimlets with Lime Foam and shaved Lime Rind and I have Moscow Mules with handmade Ginger Beer. Seemed like a good selection of Beer and Wines. We had Finca La Mata on Saturday night, a good wine which I have bought by the case. Annapolis is a drinking town and it doesn't disappoint in this regard. We have had salads, Fried Cuban Rolls, Lamb, Sea Bass, Pork Loin, frites and they were all great. They have 4-5 entrees in groupings such as sea, land, veggie, pasta and appetizers. On West street about a mile away from city dock, which makes for easier parking.
  24. Well somehow we are a week behind so maybe next week it will be close enough for pictures. Murphy's law dictated that the vent showed up without blower and that the project manager didn't like the way the countertops turned out. The project manager has an exceptional eye for detail and is always thinking of what needs to be done. When he saw where the seams in the Island were going, he has the carpenter notch the cabinets frames so reinforcing steel could be inserted. Plumber also caught that the stove and outdoor grill needed a larger gas regulator. Also now realize that since our pantry is all drawers we will need to get drawer dividers to keep items from rolling around. Very happy though it would have nice to be done.
