  1. I remember back in the late 80's early 90's when they used to have the big St.Patricks Day festival at the corner of 19th and M street. Plus the Mid-town Bar Crawl, back when Rumors and MadHatter and Sign of the Whale were king of the DC bars. With the Crowbar and all of the motorcycles out front.
  2. Blue and Gold's location is what Mister Days is today. Pretty solid place but unfortunately it was around pre-clarendon rush. It used to be that you either went there or the Clarendon Grill. Now knowing that if my memory serves me correctly the original Mister Days used to be in alley way, in between 18th and 19th streets, between M and N streets. I think you could actually walk in to Samatha's which was on N Street, and walk out the back door and into the alley way to get to Mister Days.
  3. in 1997 I left Richmond to help open the last of the Bistro Bistro locations, which is now Willow. I watched as the Qwest building went up and the neighboring area started to grow. I also watched as the neighbor restaurant, Rio Grande stayed jammed packed, while our seats sat empty. People always would say that parking was a nightmare and that none of the garages were accessable after certain hours. I begged the owners to allow for Valet and they scoffed at the idea and kept on saying "Look at all of the residential that is within 5 blocks of this place, no one drives to get here." That following Spring of 1998 I left Bistro Bistro to open Bistro Bis and never looked back. What I realized was that in fact people like the opportunity to have valet just in case. Ballston will grow as anchor establishments, Taylor Gourmet and Kappanos, open their doors in the near future.
  4. Thoughts as follows and Joe Riley might take a whip to my hind for saying this: Harper and Strasburg are immense talents but the Nationals need to temper their expectations with their production. If they can do so, get Strasburgs head on straight, and get Harper to realize that keeping the congo line moving instead of swinging for the fences, they will naturally release their god given talents. Harper will not face a lefty for about 2 weeks so giving him the day off yesterday was a good decision on Williams part.
  5. Still think Zeke's out of Baltimore is the best stuff around lately. I pick up my Hippie Blend at MOM's in Arlandria and I gotta say its so smooth and creamy.
  6. If you ever get the chance do the drive to Topping, VA. Its right at the bridge, well short drive from the bridge that takes you either up to Urbanna in Middlesex County( Middle Pennisula), or Kilmarnock in Lancaster County(Northern Neck). A beautiful part of the state.
  7. Don't forget Society Fair for Market, as well Bastille for French. O'Connell's for a Pint and solid Grub. Monroe's to sit at the bar and nosh but keep expectations to a minimum. Friendly staff.
  8. There is a higher density of residential in the areas for which one discusses in Arlington (Rosslyn-Ballston Corridor). But are you going to say that from the bottom of Lee Highway at Lyon Village to the top of Lee Highway at District Taco you hit all those points? Or stroll along Columbia Pike, which has a lot of 'ethnic' options but what about high-end? I think its a matter of opinion when it comes to who has it better. When I think of Mexican I hardly think of Taqueria, its more SoCal cuisine. Have you ever gone through and eaten at any of the places in Arlandria, which in fact is Alexandria? Old Town is built for tourism as well residential, Arlington not so much. So there is a distinct difference in how restaurants cater to the masses. I grew up in Arlington, and now live in Alexandria. I know the options are not what they are in Arlington, but then again I would never live in Arlington again for what it has turned into. I am a 3rd generation Arlingtonian but consider myself an Alexandrian.
  9. Its on the block past Howell going South. Some might say that once you pass over that Avenue you may as well be in Kansas, not that there is anything wrong with Kansas. Del Ray has loyalty issues as well, some places stay open that I can't understand how or why, others struggle with good concept and follow through and seem to fail. This spot seemed to want to be a grown ups place in a stroller and dog town. As well the food was off the mark. Let that be a lesson to future owners, food has to be on point, not perfect but enjoyable for people to come back.
  10. I agree, but who is going to stop them. Maybe that's why Zimmerman got out along with his side projects. Think about that 1 million dollar bus stop on Columbia Pike or the endless amounts of dollars that continually keep going into researching Trolly cars on the Pike. Or an aquatics center that seemingly doesn't need to be, or overcrowded schools that show no relief in sight except building an elementary school on top of a middle school. But one does need to ask, with the assessments being so high this time around, are they actually in fact in line with neighboring counties/cities, or is this really gouging to make up losses.
  11. Arlington County has to make up for its suggested budget shortfall that is on the books I believe for 2015. I feel for the owners as I do know several of them that have been hit pretty hard, I am talking to you Nick Freshman. But as I have always felt that owners who are a part of the community and as well good business people most likely saw this coming, eventually. As for Ballston, its vacancy rate within the commercial area is alarmingly high and something that I think scares potential restaurants away, but people like Taylor Gourmet and Mike Isabella will make a run at it, and most likely succeed with flying colors. Now, if only the County could get the strip mall disasters along lee highway up to speed........
  12. Andrew is a solid fit, a local guy who grew up in Arlington, VA, worked in restaurants in DC and has a great wine background. Good fit, I say yes. Good Luck to Andrew.
  13. Some simply say that the bitterness and tannins in chocolate counter against the tannins in red wines. I would think that a lighter style of chocolate presentation would require something along the lines of a softer, toned down red with little to no tannins. I remember hearing someone say to me a long time ago 'Go ahead and eat a mouth full of almonds and drink a big glass of Cab.' I thought it odd at the time but once you try it, you realize what food items have copious amounts of tannins that you might not ever realize. Still need to talk with you about some chocolates for our Lallier Tasting next week.
  14. My comments revolved around the fact that seemingly people were put off by some service issues and food that was not up to speed. And now a departure of the brewmaster paints a cloudy picture. But as I was pointing out I think they will shake things off, regroup and get a direction that equates to being able to handle pre/post game crowds as well find a direction that fits their profile.
  15. Baseball season=volume. They will get the ship righted well before the first pitch. I can also 'only through assumption' believe that NRG looked at this spot not because of the immediate baseball surrounduings but because this area was slated for much needed development, like grocery stores and residential development being approved. Any quadrent that is in need of development and growth has to have anchors attached (subway station, a cemented large scale business-Department of Transportation helps, grocery stores) without it residential has a hard time growing and expanding. NRG will make its steady income on the people who live down there, not visit every once in a while because they attend a baseball game.
  16. Sholtzky's deli-Bistro Bistro- Fish Place owned by the guys who King Street Blues-Willow
  17. SeanMike is correct, He lives right up the street from me and we talk from time to time. he is out of the industry and happy as a clam.
  18. That was awesome. Simply not letting the world we live in disturb the flow of harmony. Totally agree.
  19. As much as i agree with Dave's comments, the problem that exists is when that same staff has other servers come in to their bar and they avoid the comp check, ergo give away free drinks, or heavier pours. Plain and simple, no shift drinks, it leads to other problems down the road.
  20. Just good people trying to make it in the world of small business. Del Ray Variety is a mish mash of items. It reminds me of Robertsons Five and Dime that is now Bills Hardware in North Arlington. Its got everything that one might need except fashionable organic food. But it does have organic baby toys and items. Greeting cards, wrapping, balloons, and a whole lot more. Did I see seasonal decorations? You got it! Household items? Bam! The jist of this place is its got a little of everything. Swing by and thank me later. Right off Mt Vernon Avenue. Have fun. Josh Radigan
