  1. Went to Joung Kak last weekend- Coal grilled BBQ smells great. My jacket smelled like meat the next day. We had a combo plate which included Bulgolgi, Kalbi, pork, and, my fav, tripe. We also ordered a hot pot with kimchi, sausage, sticky rice dumplings, noodles, and SPAM! pics
  2. I put up some pictures from the Wegman's event on my blog. We got to try oyster and corn chowder with chipotle, a salad of edamame, watercress, peas, chickpeas, and peppers, lamb stroganoff, and goat cheese doughnuts. Included for $20- we all got gift bags with Wegman's products- like balsamic vinegar and infused oil. The real interesting thing was that Jason Ambrose had a vanilla sea salt that he used for the doughnuts that tasted amazing. The next event in 11/12 with the executive chef of the Harbor Renaissance hotel restaurant.
  3. So from now to June, on the 1st Wed of each month, Wegman's in Hunt Valley has a cooking class/demo with a local chef. It's $20, but in addition to trying the dishes, you get a gift basket of fancy salt and cooking oils from Wegman's. In Sept, the executive chef of Oregon Grille, Stefan Sabo cooked. Tonight, chef Jason Ambrose of Salt is cooking. I'm taking my mom to this event tonight as it is close to her house.
  4. I gotta plug Kenny Shopsin's cookbook: Eat Me- the food and philosophy of Kenny Shopsin, now available on Amazon. It just came out, and he is on Late Night with Conan O'Brien tonight to discuss it. If you don't know him, he is the owner-cook at Shopsin's now in the Essex St Market in the Lower East Side, NYC- the menu is amazing- it includes hundreds of items like slutty cakes (pumpkin, peanut butter, pistachio, cinnamon pancakes), the diego (poached eggs over poutine), and hatch chile sloppy joe sliders. Plus he's an amazing person to talk to- opinionated and stubborn like the way new yorkers should be. There's even a documentary (albeit a bad one) about him: I like killing flies.
  5. Good news- the Baltimore City Paper is going to name Grace Garden the best Chinese restaurant in Baltimore. They deserve it. I went last night, and Mrs. Li has some bitter melon (Ku Gwa) from her garden on the menu- it was served with beef and black bean sauce- good stuff. She mentioned that they have some winter melon's coming in for soup sometime in mid-late October as well.
  6. Rehoboth Went to Espuma in Rehoboth Beach, this labor day weekend- wow great meal. Pics The rethought "bacon and egg" salad was pretty cool. I had the Black Mission fig salad with parmesan foam. For entree, I got the trio of Berkshire pork, but the best was their special, the Veal Ossobucco. Someone else got the vegetarian extravaganza, which ended up being 7 different vegetarian items- 3 cold, 4 warm- like an ultra solo tapas experience. Dessert was good, too- Jay's ice cream sandwich- 2 meringues sandwiching hazelnut ice cream was inspired. We also tried the chocolate, chocolate, chocolate- molten chocolate cake, pots de creme and a chocolate milkshake.
  7. I second that- I prefer to get the Thrasher's fries at the original long lined location too- maybe it's the oil, I don't know. They were really good again this year.
  8. I finally got around to try Cinghiale near the harbor. It's an Italian restaurant that is part of Cindy Wolf's Charleston group in Baltimore. The place divided into 2 sections, the more casual bistro-like Osteria, and the fancy Enoteca. However, you can order off both menus no matter where you sit. Since we were more slobbed out, we ate in the Osteria, but I ended up ordering off the Enoteca menu, which is like a prix fixe that you can also add wine pairings with each course. The food was really delicious- I started with La Carne Cruda- a raw veal tenderloin topped with poached quail egg. My next course was some boar ravioli with a brown butter sauce. The main dish was amazing - Il Maiale- a roasted Berkshire pork rack with red wine sauce, grilled peaches and an arugula salad. My dining companions had a pretty amazing heirloom tomato salad with gorgonzola. All in all, it's definitely got the impressive food the Charleston group is known for. Pics
  9. Went to Bada Bing Bada Beef Friday night- kinda disappointed. My medium rare sandwich turned out more medium well. Fries were soggy as well. I don't know it the signs there of being under new management are new or not, but I know that at my fave, Canopy, there is more consistency of quality.
  10. Stopped by Grace Garden this weekend, this time for carryout. I got the Curry Beef Stew- wow- whatta dish- it was a mild curry with potato, onion, and some great tender beef which included tendons. So good and rich. I also tried their Ma Po Tofu. It was beautiful with all the spices and oils mixed in. They kicked it up some with more Ma La sauce. The tofu was so tender. Another outstanding dish.
  11. You're right near a whole lot of Baltimore's better retaurants. Within a few blocks are Pazo, Roy's, Fleming's steak house, Oceanaire, Charleston, Lebanese Taverna and Cinghiale A little further is Little Italy. I think Pazo, the tapas restaurant in the Charleston group, might work in your price range. I wish I could remember which restaurants in Little Italy I like, but they are all worth trying out. I would caution you on Ra sushi because they blast loud techno during the meal.
  12. Saturday morning you could check out the Pennsylvania Dutch Market for breakfast and lunch. They have some nice farm style breakfasts and sandwiches. Heck you could also grab food a Wegman's on Shawan road. Is it Shore Leave or something?
  13. I posted up more pics from Grace Garden from my dinner with the folks, ol iron stomach, and gubeen. I gotta say- the Eight Treasure Duck was a piece of art. I also loved the "Triple T" or Sichuan Beef Treasures. Since I'm taking friends to the airport Friday, I may try to carryout some stuff.
  14. We were in Philly last night for the Popped festival, and for dinner we went to Cochon on the south side, a French style bistro. It's BYOB and cash only, but the food was pretty good. Pics here. For first courses, we had the sweetbreads with haricot verts and seared scallops with a frisee, lardons, asparagus and fingerling potato salad. We actually were hoping for the crispy chicken livers, but they ran out. For dinner, hands down, the best dish was pork shoulder over lentils dePuy and roasted brussel sprouts topped with a poached egg. The pork was incredible moist and juicy. The duck breast with white bean ragout and pomegranate gastrique was also good. For dessert, we a simple but solid creme brulee and chocolate cake. We got comped the dessert in trade for the 3 beers we did not drink from our six pack. Not bad.
  15. frozen yogurt with fruit toppings. it's really popular with asians for some reason. people assume it's healthy like jamba juice. i think it's ok, not worth the hype. they don't allow pictures at their stores so no one will steal the design of them if that tells you anything.
  16. I think it's Red Mango. I heard Pinkberry knocked them off, but since Pink Berry is more successful. . .
  17. Not quite Wilmington, DE, but close enough. I wanted to recommend a Chinese restaurant in Newark, DE, the Bamboo House Restaurant. It's worth pulling off 95 to try lunch or dinner. My aunt and uncle who live in Newark swear by this place. You definitely need to order off the "Authentic Chef's Specials" part of the menu. I would recommend the following: Chicken with Basil (3 cup chicken)- it's the best I've had in the area- (Bmore, DC, Philly); the Smoked Pork (w/fat) with Bok Choy- it's like the Chinese version of greens but the veggies stay crispy, the pork is smoked there; the Lamb in Black Pepper sauce; the Vegetable Ham with Homemade Tofu- a vegetarian dish that is really great; Mala Fish Filet- spicy dish with veggies. So if you have any reason to come to Newark (UDelaware), this is worth checking out. some pics
  18. I tried the JFX pit beef place at the Farmer's Market last week. It was ok- not great- hand slicing creates bigger chunks of meat- i think i prefer the mechanized slicer. Also my medium rare was more medium. Not really worth the wait or the early morning wakeup. I'll stick with my Canopy.
  19. When I went to Japan last year- they had the Mega Mac- a double big mac with 4 patties. I think they market this in Japan and Asia to fatten up Asia since America has been conquered already.
  20. So I finally went to this place. Took the folks with me, who are probably tougher critics of Chinese food than I. It was pretty darn good - a great find for the area. We ordered the Peacock Chicken (had to call 2 days in advance)- it was a Mala sauce- sesame, chili topped on a whole steamed chicken cut up nicely. Yummy- still eating leftovers this week. We were recommended by the chef to try the Pocket tofu- the tofu were like fluffy white meatballs- my mom figured they got some tofu and blended it with egg white and shrimp mousse for the flavor. We chose the nonspicy sauce with it. This was probably my favorite item. I love a good tofu dish. We got the lauded Sichuan pork with rice powder. I don't know if he did it for us, but he steamed the dish in a lotus leaf. Really good- fatty, not greasey- great flavor. It reminds me of a dish my aunt makes with duck for the holidays. We also tried the basil fish filets- it was basically 3 cup chicken with fish instead (1 cup soy sauce, 1 cup wine, 1 cup sesame oil) with lots of basil- It was good- not the best i've had though. All in all, this is a place I would go back to. It for me is a good substitute for my childhood fav Szechuan Best for the south side of Baltimore. pics
  21. Here's a fun link to NY Times breakdown of stadium foods The Chicago White Sox stadium food must have been awful.
  22. I'm doing a CSA up here in Baltimore with Cromwell Valley CSA. It's my first time, and I already love it- had garlic scape for the first time- made it in a nice stir fry. We've also had a great load of snowpeas and sugar snap peas this past week.
  23. Thanks Henry for the detailed review. I was dissed for recommending Canopy over Chaps on the Chowhound board. I feel vindicated.
