  1. At the Slackhaus- we watched Stephen Chow's God of Cookery a few months back. It's a kung fu cooking movie that incorporates elements of Iron Chef and the Bocuse D'or. Very funny.
  2. Had a light supper at BlueGrass Sat night. I ordered the wonderful soft shell crab served with an old bay cole slaw and egg salad, and a pair of tacos- one with pork tongue, one with spicy pork cheek- good stuff. They seemed to have pared the menu down a bit as the honeymoon period of being a new place has seemed to died a bit, but I'm glad the chef is still trying new menu items. I was told by one of my eating companions that the 1/2 fried chicken was delicious.
  3. Stopped in for dinner tonight. It looks like Chef Li's added several new items to the menu as of the last couple weeks. He's included the "Phoenix Purse", an item that he has made in the past for special dinners as a regular item you can order a few days ahead. It is a dumpling using skin made of egg white and filled with chicken and veggies. He's also added several new seafood items including a conch dish and something called Cantonese Sea Treasures (also a preorder). I had the Sichuan Dan Dan Noodles which was noodles with sesame sauce topped with pork cooked with Sichuan peppers. I already hoping to make it back again later this month.
  4. I have to take a friend to BWI tonight, and I plan to have supper at Grace Garden in Odenton around 6:30 tonight. Anyone interested in joining me, PM me.
  5. Dropped in for a burger last night after an eye exam. I'm always happy when I can get fried egg on top of my burger. They had a good crowd for a Wednesday night- a real neighborhood feel, and the menu seemed to be pretty standard, but I think the chef is trying to make it more about quality ingredients. While, personally, I still think Baltimore's best burger is at Abbey, McCabe's burger hit the spot.
  6. I saw this on the local news this morning. The Mason Dixon Master Chef tournament pits local chefs in head to head competition Monday and Tuesday nights starting next week through the summer. It's taking place at Truffles catering at the Belvedere hotel. $55/ticket, $75 for something called the judging experience. Not sure what I make of this, but can't we all just get along?
  7. I had a chana masala burrito with guacamole from Curbside Cafe at the SoWeBo festival on sunday. Not bad. This was followed by a peanut butter and jelly cupcake from Iced Gems at the Catonsville farmer's market- it had peanut butter icing and the jelly was made like the tastycake jelly krimpets.
  8. Finished translating the Thai menu at Bangkok Garden. Here are links- I split them into the two columns that are on the menu. There are phonetic pronunciations as well a brief descriptions. My favorite items are the Yam Makheua Yao ,salad of smoky grilled Chinese eggplant, the Khang Som Cha-Om Kai Sai Koong, sour red curry broth with shrimp and acacia omelette. and the papaya salad with crab. We had the Thai hot jungle curry with chicken wed and it was fire hot- a good hurt. The most puzzling item to translate was something called "gold buttons" - turns out it's chicken nuggets. column 1 column 2
  9. Word on Chowhound is that this place might be closed- I will check to confirm in the next few days.
  10. I am diligently working on a translation of the Thai menu (with descriptions of the dishes) using a couple different translations, the internet, and trips to the place, and as soon as I finish, I will make it public to the board.
  11. If there is a concern about a shrimp allergy- you should check with an allergist to get tested. You do not want to have a second "reaction" because that could be anaphylaxis and can be fatal. There is a phenomenon called scombroid poisoning that comes from spoiled darker fish like tuna mostly where, as the fish becomes a little more rotten, there is a release of histamine chemicals that can cause similar symptoms to an allergic reaction- itch, swelling, etc.
  12. I went to the Columbia, MD branch of Bangkok Garden last weekend with a roughly translated version of their Thai menu. The food was hot as anything, but excellent. The waitresses came out to watch us eat because they said very few non-Thai customers would eat some of the items we ordered. We started with papaya salad with pickled brined blue crab. It has a totally different flavor from the usual salad with dried shrimp. The item that the waitresses were impressed we got was the crudites (broccoli, eggplant, bamboo shoots, cucumber) with a dip of cold sweet and really spicy shrimp paste. We also added the option of the whole grilled fish to eat with the dip. The Chinese broccoli with pork belly was pretty good- not spicy at all. Our last item was a sour red curry soup with shrimp and acacia leaf omelettes. This was the most spicy item of the meal. There are about 30 or so items on this Thai menu, so I'm planning on going back to try some more. pics
  13. Posted up a lot of pictures from the picnic. I ate so much I was unable to move for about an hour. It was great meeting so many fellow board members. the pig the food desserts & drinks
  14. I went last night with friends to the beautiful Hotel Monaco downtown and ate a great dinner at the B & O American Brasserie, which opened in the past year. The executive chef, E. Michael Reidt, was named one of the "Best New Chefs" in 2001 by Food & Wine magazine (in that year included Frank Ruta, Wylie Dufresne & Anita Lo) We started with a trio of appetizers: chicken liver mousse with figs, the steak tartare & carpacchio, and the smoked pork belly on a banana-lentil salad with chile caramel. All three were excellent. I particularly enjoyed the banana-lentil salad with the pork belly- the combination of sweet & savory was good. We got another round of items: the Market flatbread -red bliss potato, ricotta, egg & baby arugula, the "Kentoocky Fried" sweetbreads with raisins, bacon & capers, and the ricotta gnocchi in an arugula pesto. The flatbread had a great tasting crust, and again there was a salty-sweet combo with the yummy sweetbreads. The gnocchi was ok- but their texture was so light and fluffy. Our table also had three terrific entrees: the duck two ways (sous vide and confit) with cassoulet style white beans, the adobo braised pork shank, and the rosemary skewered scallops with oxtail, parsnip puree and foie gras emulsion. The scallops were coated with couscous so they had a crispy outside. Then we had a couple desserts- Meyer lemon bars with blueberry marmalade and sorbet, and take on strawberry shortcake with scones, strawberry sorbet, and rhubarb soup.
  15. In generating the update Baltimore guides, I noticed this mention about their French onion soup. They have quite an extensive beer selection- featuring a lot of US craft brews as well as a few from the UK, Germany, Belgium, and Japan. There menu also tried to make more classy usual pub favorites like fish & chips and burgers. I went there yesterday for lunch. We started with the poutine- the fries were fried in duck fat, and they used gruyere, duck gravy, and sprinkled bits of duck confit in it. Not bad- I still prefer cheese curds. I had the kobe style burger with swiss and mushroom served on a brioche bun- It was good. My tablemate had the lobster grilled cheese which was made with brie- very rich.
  16. I just updated the Baltimore Suburbs Guide as well - feel free to message me in cased I missed anything.
  17. The just opened restaurant, Vino Rosina, located in the Harbor East area of town is helmed by former Top Chef contestant Jesse Scandlin, formerly of Abacrombie. The concept is supposed to be a wine bar with tapas dishes. 507 S. Exeter (Bagby bldg) (410) 528-8600
  18. I'm planning on coming down from Baltimore. Not sure what I'm gonna bring, but will try to let you guys know this week.
  19. Popped into Bluegrass last night for a late night supper. This time they had the beef heart on special- it was prepped sous vide, slice thin with thousand island and pickles. I also had the ricotta dumplings that were nice.
  20. Went here for lunch today- a really good deal from mon-fri for the midday meal- 3 dishes and a soup for under $30. We started with a really nice soup made with amazing chicken broth, cilantro, 1000 year egg and clearly homemade, never frozen, fish balls. For out 3 dishes, we got the countryside style fish filets- which were spicy, prepared in a hunan style. We also got the Yu Tsai with garlic. My favorite of the three was the spicy pig skin. The way they cut the pig skin was in thin strips so that it looked like noodles. It was then stir fried with a spicy sauce and celery. Not heavy or oily at all. We also ordered an additional dish off the new chef's menu- mountain mushrooms with shredded pork. It reminded me of the the Mao's pork dish but with a nice variety of different mushrooms. pics
  21. This summer, there is going to be a new Belgian brasserie opening in Hampden in June 2010. Their facebook has updates on the renovation progress. 3520 Chestnut Avenue Baltimore, MD, 21211 (410)366-1636
  22. I went to Ze Mean Bean Cafe in Fells Point last week for dinner. Monday was $12 for 12 bottles night- we decided to try an ok malbec with dinner. We started with the Slavic Sampler appetizer which consisted of 3 pierogis (cheese, saeurkraut, potato), a holupki, a potato pancake and some kielbasa. The pierogis were delicious- particularly the cheese. For my dinner, I opted for a few more appetizers- the borsht which was made with golden beets that night, and the holushki, potato dumplings fried in butter with mushrooms and veggies. I tried some of my friend's Hungarian goulash as well. I'm not a huge fan of Eastern European cuising, but I would say the meal overall was decent. I would recommend going on nights they are running specials as the price point was a little high. pics 1739 Fleet Street Baltimore, MD (410) 675-5999
  23. We did another Eden Center mini food safari last weekend. I had the roast pig at Cho Cu Saigon (make sure it's the pig you order, it's the one with the thick skin) We also really liked the Cha gio here- thin crispy skin. Then we hopped around the corner for the No.1 Banh Mi at Nhu Lan Sandwich shop. I read that this is Sietsema's favorite. The place smelled like stinky tofu, but the bread on the banh mi was outstanding, chewy, crusty. We finished off with Thang Tong, where we had the Banh Xeo- the Vietnamese crepe- loaded with shrimp, pork, mung bean and bean sprouts. pics Cho Cu Saigon 6763 Wilson Blvd Ste 6D Nhu Lan Sandwich Shop 6763 Wilson Boulevard Thanh Tong 6795 Wilson Boulevard
  24. Another truck- Curbside Cafe- I think it's mostly burritos- near Hampden mostly. Per their facebook- they'll be on the Ave for first friday tonight-- on the menu: Pulled Pork, Chana Masala, Spicy Chicken, & Black Bean Burritos
