  1. I dropped by Mi Viejo Pueblito in Highlandtown for lunch yesterday. It's been getting some chatter on Chowhound and the City Paper in the past few months. They offered a lunch buffet, but I opted for a torta with black beans, spicy pork filets, avocado, lettuce and tomato. It came with a side of plantains and a crema dipping sauce. The tortilla chips were really good with a mild-med red salsa. The menu looks promising- menudo, mole poblano, chilaquiles. I look forward to going back.
  2. Just checked out the events for Baltimore Beer Week next month. Looks like a lot of fun items including Oktoberfest at the TImonium fairgrounds, the Baltimore Beer festival at the Canton waterfront, many beer and food pairings including a Wild Game dinner at Ellicott Mills, Dogfish dinner at Morton's with Sam Calagione, a Unibroue (Quebec) dinner at Metropolitan, a Sierra Nevada dinner at blue hill, and many more.
  3. There is a difference between the DeLorenzo's in Trenton. I blogged about it last year. I like the pie at the one on Hudson, but the one on Hamilton is more friendly.

  5. Hello all, While not an official dr.com event, I wanted to offer to people a dinner at Bluegrass for Wed Oct 6th (most likely) with some Baltimore foodies. If people are interested please pm me for details. So far, FYI, it will be a five course meal for approx $65/ head. I still hope for a bonafide DR event, but I am still testing the waters of setting these things up in a way that will get people from DC to come up to Bmore on a weekday night.

  7. Fenwick; Rehoboth I was down at Fenwick Island last weekend for my annual boys trip with friends from grad school. We went to Touch of Italy in Rehoboth for lunch before going on the Dogfish Head Brewery tour. Their sandwiches were delicious- had the No. 2 - hot capicolla, handmade mozzarella and sun dried peppers. They also bake their own Italian bread. pics We had crabs at Fenwick Crab house- decent, good beer selection. Their crabcake was something to be desired. To make up for it, we had the delicious crabcakes from the Crabcake Factory in OC. Another evening, after drinks at the House of Welsh (very old school place), we had the fantastic Quahog Chowdah at Nantuckets as well as some delicious PEI mussels with basil pesto garlic and white wine sauce. pics

  9. They just opened up a branch up near the movie theater at White Marsh. Stopped in after seeing Piranha 3D. I kind of wish the beef patty was just a little bit bigger, and the onion rings were a little overcooked. I did like my black & white milkshake though.
  10. In Montreal, I'd recommend Maamm (or MA-Am-M) Bolduc for their beef bourgignone poutine. I still like La Banquise, but this place might be a little better. On your way to Pittsburgh, if you can stop in Rochester, you can get a Garbage Plate at Nick Tahou Hots. Then there's Primanti brothers for sandwiches in Pittsburgh.
  11. I'd love to come, but because I'm coming from Baltimore I cannot be there until around 6:45 ish. Put me in for 1 though.
  12. I've gone to R&R now twice because of HowChow's mention on his blog. I think it's pretty awesome how this pretty nondescript Shell gas station is home to cheap, yummy Mexican food. My first trip I had the $2 tacos- they were out of lamb, so I tried the al pastor and carnitas. They warmed up the tortillas on the grill and topped the meat with onions & cilantro. All came with lime and a spicy tomatillo sauce. I also ate the ceviche. They fried up a corn tortilla and topped it with a ceviche of fish and shrimp that was also very good. My second trip was before going to Merriweather for the Arcade Fire show. I had planned on trying the lamb this time, but I saw on special, they had an $8 mole poblano. It was a quarter chicken topped with a decent, slightly oily mole sauce with rice, beans & cheese. It really hit the spot, especially with a fresh strawberry shake. I most definitely would love to go back and try breakfast as well as their tortas. pics
  13. Just got home from the Dogfish dinner at Bluegrass. Chef Patrick had an amazing set of pairing with the Dogfish head beers. The foie gras course was amazing- he cured the foie in the Dogfish Sah'tea which was chock full of juniper berry flavor, but with a note of black tea as a finish. So good. Both the duck and hanger steak were so beautifully prepared, and the savory blue cheesecake at the end was a perfect ending. pics I talked with Chef Patrick about possibly setting up a DR.com dinner here in the next few months.
  14. Here are pictures from last night's dinner. My favorites were the softshell with Benton's bacon and the wonderful blueberry dessert. Kudos to Chef Jeff. I had a great meal, and it is always good to see everyone. Also, thanks to goodeats for setting up the evening.

  16. I'd recommend a couple new places- B&O Brasserie at the Hotel Monaco downtown, or Bluegrass Tavern in Federal Hill.
  17. They don't officially take reservations, but if you have a large party they can hold a table for you. I do this when 8-10 people are getting there a certain time.
  18. Stopped by here for lunch- their Chef's dog was the Tijuana Danger Dog from Chef Sarah of 13.5% Wine Bar in Hampden. It consisted of Duroc pork butt, applewood smoked bacon, pigeon peas, chiles d'arbol & a natural casing, topped with peach ketchup. Could have been a tad juicier. I'm wondering if they had ground the meat a little more coarser, it would have been better.
  19. I realized that Ryleigh's Oyster Bar in Federal Hill has not been mentioned on this board. Patrick Morrow who is now at Bluegrass used to be the chef here. It remains one of my favorite neighborhood places to drop in for good, reasonably priced seafood. One of my favorite items is their take on Mexican grilled corn using Old Bay and feta cheese. On Tuesday nights, they have been running "Shore Nights" with great specials on seafood- $1 oysters, $2 steamed crab (their seasoning is like a peppery old bay), sometime crawfish boils, and baked clam pots. This week, they had a $16 1 1/2 lb grilled lobster that was outstanding. One of my friends also recommends their Shrimp & Grits.
  20. Woo Chon for my favorite Korean BBQ in NY is on 36th between 5th and 6th ave- the yang bulgogi (lamb) is amazing.
  21. Went to the B&O Crab Bash last night, and had a nice time. One disappointment was that I arrived around 6:15 and 3 of the 7 chefs had already run out of their crab dishes. The event was to go to 8pm, and by 7, dishes were left. Fortunately for latecomers, B&O started serving crabcake appetizers from their kitchen. From B&O's chef Reidt, I had a smoked crabcake with creamed corn & what he called, liquid ravioli. I think it was supposed to be like xiao long bao, but the filling was not a squirt of crab soup like the real deal. Chef Silva from Boston's Bambara made a corn & crab ravioli with basil oil and a chorizo chip. Chef Healey from Domaso (Arlington, VA) made a crab spanakopita with a red pepper aioli. My favorite was the blue crab salad with heirloom tomatoes, pickled beets and candy fennel from Chef Tellez of Philly's Square 1682.
  22. Local press is buzzing that Two Boots Pizza, originally from NYC is opening their first branch in the Power Plant by the harbor today. They are going to have delivery, too. I think I last ate at Two Boots in the 90's in Alphabet City next to their video store location.
  23. We asked our waiter to let us know if we were ordering too much. I was worried we were ordering too much, but he told us that our order was adequate, and we did indeed finish everything without feeling overwhelmed.
