  1. I'd love to come as well, but could you make it toward 7pm because I am coming down from Baltimore.
  2. I went to Atlas Room recently prior to a show at the Red Palace. It was a pretty quiet weekday evening. There were only a couple of tables present. Menu is a bit different- divided into "proteins"- that are then ordered in dishes of increasing size- small-med-large. I ordered 2 small items and one medium item. I very much enjoyed the grilled seafood salad which consisted of mussels, calamari, scallops, & shrimp on a bed of Israeli couscous and some papadums. I also got the beef short rib ravioli which the waiter said was popular. I thought is was just alright. The filling reminded me too much of Chef Boyardee. My medium dish was really great: the saddle of lamb with chickpea puree, fennel, tomato, olives ragout and parsley sauce. The lamb was beautifully cooked. They also serve "pre-prohibition" cocktails at Atlas. I tried two- the Clover Club (Beefeater London Dry Gin, housemade Grenadine, lemon juice and egg white) and La Rosa Flip (ruzan Blackstrap rum, Java Head Stout, and an egg yolk topped with nutmeg). PICS
  3. I'm considering braving the cherry blossom crowds tomorrow to do a little food truck safari at the SW Waterfront festival. They invited CapMac (@CapMacDC), Curbside Cupcakes (@curbsidecupcake), DC Slices (@dcslices), District Taco (@districttaco), Eat Wonky (@eatwonky), Fojol Bros. (@fojolbros), Red Hook Lobster Truck (@lobstertruckDC), Sidewalk Sweetsations (@SidewalkSweetsations), & Tasty Kabob (@TastyKabob). Hope to get there around midday.
  4. If going head to head, I would prefer Ren's. Although, I'd want a chance to try the other varieties of Toki's ramen- the miso, the chicken, and the kimchee. Ren's noodles and fatty pork are better. The egg at Toki was awesome, but the broth might edge to Ren's favor as well.
  5. I managed to get into Toki opening night on Friday. 30 minute wait. I think one problem is that they are serving alcoholic drinks/cocktails, which leads to camping out. The ramen is good, not great, certainly not worth waiting longer than 20 minutes for. I got the Toki Hakata classic. Hakata is the style of ramen using pork bones for the soup, then sprinkled with nori, black sesame seed, and pickled ginger. It also come with a lean char siu pork, and a really good sous vide soft cooked egg. The noodles they selected are good, but I checked and they are not made, rather ordered (similar to Ren's). The broth was good. I did finish my bowl, but I do prefer a fattier piece of pork with my noodles. I also ordered the steamed pork dumplings. These were just alright. The skins were good, there is a hint of ginger in the ground pork, and they are lightly drizzled with a tare or thick soy sauce. Because it's so dark in the place, I almost ate the cheese cloth at the base of the steamer, thinking it was a piece of cabbage. I got the Taiwanese style tofu- a cold tofu dish topped with bonito and soy sauce. I'm used to the version with 1000 year egg on top, but I think it might scare the hipsters. It again was ok. Their kimchee side was good- very fresh. I finished with the milk and cookies which were warm and delicious. I think they are a little overhyped, and I don't think they are worth the current wait times they are having, but it was not too bad. PICS
  6. What a glorious meal Antonio presented to us last night. Lots of piggy goodness. Thanks. Loved the kidney, the scrapple, and the fried egg yolk the best. Pictures and descriptions HERE
  7. I'm trekking down from Baltimore for a show at the Red Palace tonight- I'm thinking about trying the Atlas Room tonight around 6:30- anyone want to come?
  8. The Bobbie is pretty great. I also like the Capastrami. I sometimes stop at the branch in Newark when I'm near my aunt & uncle's. When I lived in Vegas, there was a definite difference between branches around town. Luckily, I lived near one whose manager was in the Capriotti family. I found out, they ship their bread from the DE/PA area to Vegas.
  9. Went to a real find in past weekend. An Uzbek restaurant in Pikesville called Silk Road Choyhona Bistro. It was recommended by some folks I met, one who was from Uzbekistan. I've had Uzbek food in Brooklyn a few years ago, and with some little knowledge of the cuisine, it made this meal really great. The place is BYOB, but we started with a pitcher of their housemade fruit drink- kind of like a less sweet kool-aid with pear halves floating in it. We started with a sampling of Uzbek "salads": Smak- tomato, croutons, cheese & mayo; suzma with radish- a sour yogurt with dill & cucumbers; Markovcha, a Korean influenced shredded carrot salad with garlic, vinegar, dill; and fried eggplant served cold folded with garlic & tomato. We had the Uzbek Tandoori Nan bread which is not flat like Indian naan, rather it is like a boule with the middle collapsed. It's very dense. The Pilav is like "pilaf"- a rice dish with carrots and lamb. We ordered several kinds of kebab- including beef lulya, lamb, lamb rib (which is on a bone), veal liver, and the "delicatessen" kebab, which is a nice way of describing the lamb testicle. My favorite was the lamb rib. The testicle reminded of fish balls or less dense chicken gizzard. They serve the meats with a spicy sauce, pickled onions, and pomengranate juice. For dessert, I tried the baklava, which unlike it's Mediterranean counterpart, is not wet & syrupy- it's more like a dry flaky pastry. I also had the "chocolate ball" which is like a dense cake doughnut hole drizzled with chocolate sauce. Total bill for 8 people- $100. Well worth a return trip. 10. There's a buzz that the folks from Woodberry Kitchen are planning to open up a separate burger joint in Hampden on Falls Road in the near future.
  11. Olironstomach, Gubeen, and I went out to Schmankerl Stube Bavarian Restaurant in Hagerstown for an over the top German luncheon. We preordered their Knusperige Schweinshaxe, a whole pork shank, slow roasted so the skin is crispy and the meat inside is fall off the bone delicious. First off, the restaurant is very classic- from the waitress' outfit to the German music to the faded 1970s-80's Bavarian tourism posters. We started with 1 liter & 1/2 liter mugs of Spaten lager and tried some appetizers. The Wurst sampler was really good, particularly the Weisswurst. We also had a plate of pickled herring with cream sauce and Geflltes Brot, a sourdough bowl filled with pork and Hunter's sauce. The Knusperige Schweinshaxe was a massive hunk of meat- probably the size of my head. It came with sauerkraut, red cabbage with apple, and a bread dumpling. It was so good. I could only eat about a third of my plate though. For dessert, we had some gooseberry schnapps, housemade Black Forest cake and apple strudel. This place is well worth to drive out for. pics 58 South Potomac Street Hagerstown, MD (301)797-3354
  12. I tried the chivito this weekend- worth the drive down from Baltimore. I'm surprised the blogs I've read have not posted pics of the chivito itself. Here it is! pics Since I had my fries on site, I thought they were great- reminded me of Steak & Shake fries from the Midwest. I can see how they won't make it beyond a 15-20 minute window. Has anyone tried the lemongrass coleslaw?
  13. Sometimes Dining started doing dinners for 2011 last night. I convince olironstomach and gubeen to come along. They are changing their format- serving a smaller number of diners (from 30ish to 20) and making the dishes family style. They were hoping to make it more social, and I think the new system works. The meal was good- we started with an amuse of halibut, radish, & oregano. The first course was bison topped with grapefruit, radicchio and fried leeks served with lentils, beets, and fresh dill. This was followed by two "snacks"- homemade pork rillettes with homemade sourdough bread and artichoke with fennel butter for dipping. The trou normande was ginger infused porato vodka, and our last savory dish was homemade raviolis with swiss chard pesto, mushroom duxelle, and egg yolk. Dessert was reaaly good- chocolate salted shortbread topped with rye ice cream accompanied by marzipan lined with candied lemon. We also got some black pepper nutmeg chocolates. The price point has gone up this year to a whopping $25/person. pics
  14. Sad new about this place- went there yesterday and they had been bought by another restaurant. I emailed Iveth, the chef, and she said she had to sell for personal reasons, but would keep in touch as regards to future plans. Too bad.
  15. Went to Banff a couple years ago. It's beautiful. I would recommend getting up on the glacier- it's unforgettable. For food, I'd recommend dinner at the Maple Leaf Grille. I had an amazing Elk filet there. They specialize in local game meats and fish, and have a great wine selection. We also had a great time taking high tea at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
  16. Just a report on the dinner I arranged with chef Iveth last night with some Charm City Chowhounders. There were a little more than twenty people, so food was set up buffet style. I asked chef for authentic Mexican, and she did not disappoint. I started with several appetizers: Esquites- a soup made with kernals of roasted corn served with mayo and chili powder- it was like Mexican roasted corn on the cob in soup form Picaditas- small corn tortilla circles topped with salsa and crema Grasshoppers- the last of this season's crop- simply cooked with lemon and salt- this would make a great bar snack Mexican candy- made with fruit- almost like gumdrops Tamales- in banana leaves with chicken, red sauce This was followed by some really good entrees served with really good beans and rice: Lengua (tongue) with choice of salsas- very tender Moronga in fried tortilla boats- Mexican blood sausage- my first time trying this- good flavors Chicharron in Verde sauce- the pork skin was soft and gelatinous like sea cucumber Mole Poblano- my favorite of the night- great sauce For dessert, we have fresh fried churros. If you guys ever get a chance for lunch there, I would also recommend the Arabe tacos- chunks of pork and skin that you dip into a smokey spicy Arabe sauce.
  17. I did not realize that there is no topic on Clementine, located in Hamilton in Baltimore. Chef Winston Blick used to be at Sobo cafe in Federal Hill making that the spot for fancy comfort food while he was there. He struck out a few years ago to his own place, and over the past couple years added an in house charcuterie and canning shop as well. He definitely subcrbes to local and seasonal cuisine. I had dinner last night with some friends- we started with their charcuterie plate. The chicken liver pate with allpice, maple syrup and black rum was delicious. I also liked the house made jaegerwurst. We sampled the crab and lobster pates, but they are not my thing. For drinks, had a nice dark & stormy and a vodka rosemary lemonade fizz. My entree was pork cheeks with oysters accompanied by gouda mashed potatoes. Dessert was a yellow cake with hazelnut icing. Correction- merged topics- thanks synasthaesia
  18. Funny how Phoenix has suddenly been active. I was just there last month and was lucky to go on a food safari one night with Dmnkly (aka Skillet Doux). We went to FnB (Food & Beverage) in Old Scottsdale first- it was spectacular. They do amazing things with local and seasonal vegetables there. I also admired how simple each dish was, not overdone, and perfectly constructed. My favorite was fried zucchini chips with mint and chili. We also had eggplant with yogurt, pomegranate and za'atar, a lamb's tongue salad with rye bread, green beans and cherry tomatoes, shishito peppers with tuna confit & anchovy, and roasted quail on couscous. The second stop was Nogales Hot Dogs to try a Sonoran hot dog- hot dog wrapped in bacon on a steamed fluffy bun with pinto beans, mayo, tomato and onion. I added some green salsa and queso cheese to mine. We finished our night out at Posh for their weekly Thursday staff meal. Had their version of scrapple & eggs- which was not scrapple at all, duck confit crepes and a foie torchon brulee. Dmnkly told me the late night dining scene is lacking there- even Korean BBQ's close at 10, but there is an up and coming foodie community that relies on twitter to communicate. A bit unwieldy I would imagine. His blog has some great items on the AZ scene. My pics are here.
  19. I guess it depends on how far you are willing to go. There are some decent, not great places in Towson: Burger Bros makes an ok burger Pho Dat Thanh is alright Vietnamese all the mall places- you usual chains- pf changs, cheesecake factory, tgif If you want to go a little further- Atwater's in Kenilworth has nice sandwiches and salads Orchard Market Cafe has really good Persian food Szechuan House in Lutherville is good- but order mainly off the "country side taste menu"- i'd recommend the Shyong Jaang Dow Fuu (great tofu/chicken dish), and the Wuu Geng Niou Naan (beef/tendon/daikon) The Peppermill in Lutherville- old school baltimore- steak, seafood, crabcakes- not too expensive- but again- very old school
  20. Had a great time today. My pictures of the picnic (before the camera crapped out) can be seen & downloaded here. Sorry- no pics of the amazing fried chicken, the great carrot cake, or the bacon explosion. Per leleboo's and poivrot farci's request- lots of pics of that amazing Pâté en croûte.
  21. I'm seeing a show at the Rock N Roll Hotel tonight, and might grab a bite at the Biergarten Haus next door around 7:30pm. Feel free to join me.
  22. I pretty sure I'm bringing red beans & rice and possibly gumbo. I will likely need a stove to warm them up. Looking forward to Sunday!
  23. A few months ago when I was eating at Grace Garden, Mei told me that sometime, I should try their General Tso's chicken. Just recently, I did, and it was delicious, a wonderful combination of spicy and sweet cooked beautifully that may be the best General Tso's chicken I've ever had. I was also lucky enough to try their version of zongzi, the sticky rice dish wrapped in bamboo leaves. They suggested to me that they are hoping to test out some new items for their menu in the next few months.
