  1. Went up to Montreal over 4th of July weekend with a bunch of cousins for our annual Au Pied De Cochon dinner. Since there were 6 of us, we ordered the Tête de Cochon for 2- a whole roasted pig's head- our came with a lobster stuffed in it's mouth and then the pig's tongue was stuck on the front of the lobster. Then, they took APdC mashed potatoes (loaded with cheese curds) and draped it over the pig's eyes like a blindfold. The meat just peeled off the pig's face. We tore through everything including the eyeballs and the very tasty brain which reminded me of egg yolk or firm tofu. pics A real find when we were up there was Le Quartier Général (1251 Gilford, (514) 658–1839), a recently opened bistro that is BYOB, serving reasonably priced seasonal food. We had a great beef tartare, escargot cooked with Bayonne ham, and a delicious Stanstead rabbit. Great desserts, too. They have sittings at 6 pm and 9 pm each night. pics We went to a great coffee place- Cafe Myriade, located near the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
  2. Baltimore's Summer Restaurant Week restaurant list is up. The dates are Aug 13th-22nd this year. A lot of places participating this year- including Salt, B&O, Pazo, Petit Louis, & Cinghiale.
  3. Got an email regarding this event for charity- a crab bash featuring some local chefs at B&O on Tues Aug 3rd- not too pricey, and with B&O's chef and Salt's Jason Ambrose- it could be fun. I got my ticket on Missiontix: For an admissions fee of $10, all of which will benefit the Great Kids Farm, from 5:30pm-8:00pm guests are invited to watch the chefs battle it out, sample the chefs' dishes and enjoy a complimentary cocktail created for the anniversary by Head Bartender Brendan Dorr. Attendees will also be entered into a raffle for a one-night stay at the Hotel Monaco and a gift certificate for dinner for two, a $100 value, at B&O American Brasserie. Participating chefs are: B&O American Brasserie's E. Michael Reidt, Salt's Jason Ambrose, Brewer's Art's Dave Newman, Square 1682's Guillermo Tellez (Philadelphia), Christian deLutis formerly of alizee, Domaso's Paul Healey (Arlington, VA) and Bambara's Jay Silva (Boston). Great Kids Farm educates Baltimore city students about maintaining a healthy and energy efficient lifestyle through a farm that the students, themselves maintain.   4. Hey posters, It might be more helpful if you reserve your opinions until after you have actually been to this restaurant and tried their food. At least , give them the benefit of the doubt.
  5. According to Dogfish Head's facebook, the Jiahu is going to be released to wholesaler's in mid-August. I'm planning on being down on the shore around then- hoping we'll catch some at their Restaurant then.

In the last couple years, I've been driving up to Montreal with the cousins for our annual Au Pied De Cochon fix, and on the way, we've stopped in Plattsburgh, NY for lunch before we cross the border to sample their Michigan hot dogs. I'm still a little confused by the history of these hot dogs (or it could just be wikipedia issues), but what I understand is a gentleman from Michigan developed a version of the NYC Coney Island hot dog, exported it to NY, and somehow it migrated up upstate and became the Michigan. From what a waitress told us at one of these places, each establishment has their own unique recipe for the Michigan sauce- a tomato based meat sauce/chili. The basics of the preparation are as follows: steamed hot dog, steamed bun. sauce with the option of onions- usually on top or "buried" under the sauce. Last year, we stopped at a placed called Michigan's Plus, an converted IHOP restaurant, for their Michigans. The sauce was drier than chili- more like spaghetti sauce. We had tater tots topped with the Michigan sauce as well. This year, we went to a place by Lake Champlain called Clare & Carl's. It was a drive-in with a small counter inside. Their Michigan sauce was more saucy and it had a little spiciness. They also served a poutine that alas, did not have curds. I did prefer their Michigan over the first place though. pics
  7. I've been to Philly a few times the last couple weeks for lunches. I went to Morimoto's to try his Shoyu ramen with pork belly and soft boiled egg- good, but I would venture to say Ren's Ramen is just a scratch better. pics I also finally tried the roast pork at Tommy DiNic's in the Reading Market Terminal. It was delicious, but I do think Tony Luke's has an edge with their bread. Still worth a trip. pics
  8. This family run restaurant got a lot of Chowhound buzz last year, but I had such an awful experience there I have yet to return. While the food was good, my issue was the over 1 hour wait we had for relatively simple dishes like Bun and Pho that take a few minutes to serve in most Vietnamese places. I understood that the chef, the wife of the couple, wanted to make everything to order and from scratch, but the wait was pretty ridiculous. I don't know what anyone's recent experiences have been here, or have they decided to take more time for prep beforehand to cut down on the wait times.
  9. I stopped by Scossa Restaurant in Easton, MD for dinner on my way to the shore, and was pleasantly surprised by the meal I had. He had a seasonal prix fixe menu, so I ordered the vegetable minestrone soup appetizer with the Calf's Liver Alla Veneziana entree. While the soup was alright, the liver, sauteed in olive oil was delicious, and the portion was very generous. pics 8 North Washington Street Easton, MD (410) 822-2202

  11. The Haute Dog Carte opened outside the Bonjour Bakery for lunch time at the end of June. I stopped by yesterday for lunch- had a Baltimore dog- a pork hotdog seasoned with old bay- made using a steamer, served on a skewer toasted bun with dijon mustard. The meat was great- juicy, fatty, yummy. They have other dogs- some on a roller grill- including a 1/4 lb angus beef dog. The owner hopes to have a weekly special dog made by some local chefs- this weeks venison dog from a chef at the Bluegrass Tavern was already sold out when I arrived. He's also rotating a weekly dog from Rosedale's Binkert's- this week was the Polish smoky. 6070 Falls Road Baltimore, MD, 21209
  12. I went to Comet twice when I visited Ann Arbor earlier this year. great espresso, good cappuchino, delicious pastries, too. pics
  13. Had dinner here last night with the folks- we noticed they have a late night menu now with small plates, congee, and noodle dishes. Their congee with preserved duck egg is pretty great. My dad said that the Cantonese know how to make their congee. I'm also a fan of their bitter melon with pork and loads of black beans - it's cooked so that it's actually not that bitter.

Went last night with the Charm City Chowhound group for a dinner at the Columbia branch. pics menu Naam Prik Plaa Raa- fermented fish paste dip with crudites Yam Makheua Yao- salad of smoky chinese eggplant- one of my favorites Som Tum Thai- papaya salad with crab Khang Som Cha-Om Kai Sai Koong- the sour red curry soup with shrimp and acacia omelette Pla Muk Pad Kra Pow- thai basil squid- a new one for me- really good Panang Kai- chicken panang curry- really sweet Pork with White Pepper and Garlic Sauce- good flavor Khao Raat Naa Kratiem- wide noodles with seafood (like chinese ho fun) Mango with warm sticky rice came to about $18/head
  15. I went here one afternoon last week- it was great- had the pork cheek, ear and lamb barbacoa tacos. The place was crowded with World Cup viewers. I agree with Dean, the spicy slivered onions are amazing. I do find the menu (with pictures) funny because essentially each taco looks the same. In the parking lot, I had Raspados (mexican snow cone) from a small cart. It went well with the heat of the day. pics
  16. I went with friends to DaMoim a few weekends back, and it was okay. The big disappointment was their korean tacos. We ordered the galbi (rib) and jaeyook (spicy pork), and the meats were good albeit the portions were not large. Also, they used flour tortillas, and loaded it with shredded american cheese and lettuce. It was like a taco bell soft taco- boo. I want my corn tortillas and maybe some kimchi- it should look like this, not this. On the other hand, I did like their sliders- their was a good hunk of well cooked burger topped with caramelized kimchi. Also, their fried chicken was well fried a la Bon Chon, however their only flavor was more of a soy. I wanted spicy. pics
  17. I went last night to Salt for dinner. I am punching myself in the head for never having been here until now. Ambrose's mother told us that this was their restaurant's 4th year, and the place was packed. What a great, delicious meal. We started with duck fat fries with the trio of aiolis (truffle, malt vinegar, & chipotle). I got the Boston Bibb salad with watermelon & goat cheese drizzled generously with a thick balsamic vinegar. My friend got his kobe beef slider with foie gras, and lt me try a bite- it was so well made and a perfect bite. I ordered 2 appetizers as my dinner- a chicken fried quail served with a small waffle and a mustard gravy, and a lobster mango ceviche. For dessert, I loved the trio of mini ice cream cones- cherries jubilee, milk chocolate, & caramel-marshmallow. It arrived in a custom made rack for each 1 inch cone. pics
  18. I checked out Rainpia, a Korean bar in Ellicott City, because I heard they had Korean style fried chicken on the menu. Alas, it's not as good as Bon Chon's. Their fried chicken is a bit more conventional, more saucy. They offer 3 kinds- a regular soy based sauce, a spicy version, and one that is unseasoned that you then dip into salt/pepper for flavoring.   19. The Baltimore Sun paper's dining blog mentioned that Woodberry has starting doing whole goat dinners for parties of 4-6 people. They are taking a locally raised goat and roasting the whole this head and all, and serving it with an array of sides. I hear the price is about $185 and you need to pre-order this. Anyone want to come up to give this a try?

  21. Friendly's updated their menu to include something called the Grilled Cheese Burgermelt. My cousin tried one for dinner the night after her first wedding anniversary this week- she said it is a load of a sandwich. I want one in the way I wanted that KFC Double Down.
  22. Ok- had the 1/2 fried chicken- great. The whole thing was deboned, deep fried and cut into segments. The skin was so good and the meat juicy. Talked to Chef Patrick- he's looking to add a beef heart taco and a venison heart tartare in the next week. (DC Rockwellers- come to Baltimore to try this place (and let me know so I can meet you as I live a few blocks away)
  23. I have a reservation for this saturday- just called them up. The table 24 chef will be RJ's sous chef, and they told me that it will likely be different. I'm not sure what I will do right now.
  24. Good luck on the move. Oh- and if people like that Arcade Fire- their website has a presale now for their show at Merriweather in August.
