  1. Meli is in the Admiral Fell Inn. They also have Adela, a tapas place now in the Inn. Mezze is up the street near the record store and tattoo place. I think all three are run by the same group.
  2. Just figured I'd start to gather info on food trucks in the Baltimore area: We have the Kooper's Chowhound Burger truck There is now a cupcake truck that tweets from mostly Baltimore county - Iced Gems There is the taco truck on broadway in Fells point. Last night, I passed an ice cream/milkshake and sundae truck called Miss Twist. So far I only know she's at the Locust Pt fire station 9pm most nights. The ice cream is soft serve, no dipping, but I had a nice black and white.
  3. I went to another Sometimes Dining event this past sunday. It might have been the best yet. This time we sat outdoors under a large tarp in their backyard. Ended up talking to crew guys for Ace of Cakes. We started with the same charcuterie plate we had last time. Our first entree was a pan seared baby artichoke with spring onion pesto served on a cider crepe. This was followed by a cool dish of sliced grilled bison with vanilla black-eyed peas, a smoked egg, and grapefruit zest. The middle drink was Aperol with prosecco. We then snacked on fresh endive with a tarragon dip. The main course was homemade beet and goat cheese ravioli served with prosciutto and olive oil- this was a fantastic dish. I also loved dessert- minted tres leches cake with candied rhubarb. pics
  4. Spro Cofee was in the press recently because they have a cup of coffee for $13- Aida's Grand Reserve blend. They have a branch in the Towson Library, but just opened a storefront on the Avenue in Hampden. I stopped in just for a $4 cup of coffee. They charge for the beans, not for the preparation, which includes vacuum pot, French Press, and pour over. I opted for the vac pot and drank my coffee black- it was nice. pics
  5. I have never been there, but McCabe's Restaurant, a burger place on Falls road which closed in 2009 just reopened. They are saying on their facebook page that they are trying to make more upscale late night pub food with local ingredients. Their hamburgers use Springfield Farms beef and Stone Mill bakery brioche buns. I'll try to check it out the next few weeks. 3845 Falls Road Baltimore, MD
  6. Popped back into Stuggy's late last night. This time, I had their baeurwurst! It was slow cooked in beer- so delicious with just some mustard and onion. I also tried their corn dog. It's made fresh with their 1/4 lb dog, chopped into 4 pieces, dipped in corn batter and fried to order. Spoke with the owner- they are hoping to make their own Hungarians in the near future. Very promising new late night place as and alternative to all the carryout and pizza places in the city.
  7. A new restaurant opened on Hanover St in Federal Hill, the BlueGrass tavern. Since it's a few blocks from my house, I've been twice already. The chef, Patrick comes from Ryleigh's Oyster, and he seems to be subscribing to the local food movement and he's also interested in making some in house charcuterie as well. On my first trip- I just went for a light supper. They have a nice selection of small and medium plates on the menu, I ordered the bacon jam on crostini (reminded me of Kevin from last season's Top Chef). It was really good- sweet, salty, smokey. I then ordered a fresh asparagus salad and the bison carpacchio. Both were very nice. The chef spotted me as a food person (the camera was a giveaway), so he came out, greeted me, and offered for me to try something off the menu. It was slices of corned beef heart with cornichons and aioli. Very nice. pic For desssert, I had the strawberry rhubarb pie with basil ice cream. Went back for dinner with friends another evening. This round, tried his two charcuterie plates- my favorites were his duck speck, the chicken livers, and the duck rilletes. The best item, I had was the foie gras prep for the evening- seared foie gras, in between two pancakes, with egg and bacon, and maple syrup- a foie gras McGriddle. I also tried my friends dishes- the antelope loin with redeye gravy was nice, lean, and the chicken fried quail salad was good too. This time for dessert, we had the banana creme pie which was very good. I would say, this place is very promising for the Federal Hill neighborhood. blog/pics 1500 S. 8. I realized I have never posted about this great little Ethiopian place in Pigtown. It's a family run place and the food is fantastic- generous portions, not expensive. Here is my post from my blog: We decided to try several of the half & half options to try more of the items available on the menu. The Dulet, lamb tripe, liver and meat, was nice and spicy, and was ground up fine enough that you probably could not tell it was tripe. We got the Kitfo, beef tartare, which was served with a nice light housemade cheese, and the Tibs beef. We were nicely surprised by the Doro Wot, the chicken stew cooked in a red pepper (berbere) sauce and onions. We also tried the vegetarian platter, which included lentils, spicy lentils, yelllow split peas, greens, and tofu. To drink, I liked my ginger iced tea. 821 Washington Blvd. Baltimore, MD 21230 (410) 637-3207
  9. A new gourmet hot dog place called Stuggy's opened on Broadway in Fells Point recently. They told me the have their hotdogs made for them from local sausage place Ostrowski's. They have different preparations of their hot dogs including the Michigan and Chicago style. I had the Bmore dog which is like the Attman's dog with grilled bologna and mustard. I also tried the Carolina Slaw dog which had chili and cole slaw. Both were quite good. The dogs are boiled then heated up on the grill. Their soda fountain only serves Boylan's, and oh yeah, for dessert I had their deep fried Oreo cookies. I want to go back to try their bison sausage and hot Italian. pics
  10. I, too would like to send out my thanks to Chef Seth and Gennaro for setting up such a great dinner. My personal favorites were the Methi Chaman and the Kathi roll. I posted up my pictures. (a little dark as I had no flash, so pardon the "touchups").
  11. So I'm considering starting up a few dinners up here in Baltimore. I go to dinners with some local Chowhounders, but I'm wondering if there is interest from the DC area set. Anyone?
  12. Went up to Philly for the Wilco show last weekend. Went to Capogiro Gelato for a delicious butterscotch & dark chocolate gelato. The last time I went here over the summer, we saw Michelle Obama with Sacha and Malia come through with a squad of secret service guys. For dinner, we went to Garces Trading Company. It's a small market with a center area for walkup seating (no reservations). For appetizers, we started with housemade cheese and charcuterie. I loved the housemade mozzarella- It looked like a white placenta (sorry) drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with salt and pepper. So good. We also had the chicken liver mousse with shallot confit and the fennel sausage. For entrees, we had the margherita pizza. It was nice, but next time I need to try the deep dish pizza which looked amazing. We also had the parpadelle with lamb ragu tha was tasty. My favorite dessert was the Spring Verrine, a buttermilk panna cotta with grapefruit curd, topped with pistachio-hazelnut crunch.
  13. Did a mini food safari to the Eden Center this past weekend. I did a little research on Tyler Cowen's guide and other online sources to pick out a few places to try, and set a limit of trying one dish per place. First went to Banh Cuốn Thang Long to try their name dish, the #1. Banh Cuốn consist of sheets of rice paper folded and filled with various items like pork, dried shrimp, and fried onion. The plate came with sprouts, Viet-style pork "bologna" and fried shrimp cakes, and we proceeded to grab items off it and dipping them in fish sauce with chile sauce before eating them. Second stop was Tay Do. We ordered the Bun Cha Hanoi. Out came a plate of rice vermicelli, sprouts, and veggies, and a bowl of grilled pork, pork meatballs and shrimp. We mixed up everything in a small bowl and ate it. The sauce that the meat came in was delicious on the noodles. Last stop was Banh Cuốn Saigon where we ate the Bun rieu cua, kind of like a pho noodle soup, but the broth was made with shrimp and tomatos. Really delicious. Planning another safari in a few weeks I think. Banh Cuốn Thang Long 6737 Wilson Boulevard, #22 Tay Do 6793-C Wilson Blvd. Banh Cuốn Saigon 6795 Wilson Blvd.#54
  14. Miguel's is a new restaurant from Michael Marx, former owner of Blue Agave and current owner of BBQ place Rub. I've been a couple times in the last few weeks, for both dinner and Sunday brunch. pics The menu is pretty diverse, and I like that it has an emphasis on stuff with mole sauces. I've had the Tacos El Pastor, the Carne asada empanadas, Queso Fundido with chorizo, Tostada de mariscos and the Jicama y Naranja salad. All yummy. I look forward to trying their Tostaditas de Chapulines with dried grasshoppers sometime. For brunch, my favorite was the Ibarra Masa pancakes, with chocolate, Ancho chile butter and Gran Gala orange Agave syrup It's nice to have this place within walking distance. Miguel's 1200 Stuart St. Baltimore, MD (443)438-3139
  15. Went to Michael Pollan's talk at Goucher College tonight. I ended up telling him my impression of the KFC Double Down sandwich which I had the day before. He actually said he is meaning to at least try it. It was much too salty, and the chicken was dry.
  16. The new space is open 24 hours, a little roomier, more natural light. music not as loud. Food- as good as Annandale branch. pics
  17. When you arrive, the people who run the event and live there are really friendly. They are happy to talk about the food and what they do. For first timers, they treat you with a complimentary drink. You also end up sitting at large communal tables, and both times, the guests all were very open and genuinely interested in this mixed company that has come together. I've had a great time on both occasions.
  18. Made it to another Sometimes Dining dinner. I found out one of the chefs has a cooking blog that has been mentioned in Saveur called Six Course Dinner. This dinner started with an amuse bouche of tuna rolled with radicchio & ricotta. At the table, they also had a housemade charcuterie plate with garlic sausage, lardo, a date roll, olives, & crackers. We started with a salad of fennel, jicama, and daikon with anchovy topped with a grapefruit chevre dressing. The second course was a soup, described as "pho style" with spring vegetables and beef tenderloin. It seemed more like a lemongrass soup with a little chili oil, but it was nice. We then shared a toast with the whole party with a drink of gin and melon. Our entree was halibut with swiss chard on a bed of thyme noodles with a mussel sauce. Their homemade noodles are really good. Dessert was a honey cake topped with Aleppo pepper whipped cream and a sauce made of beet puree. pics
  19. Went to Pig & Pinot friday night before seeing The Wedding Present at the Black Cat- it was so good. We ordered one of everything off the menu. RJ came by and asked us about our order and said "only one?" We ended up with 4 orders of the blood sausage, hen egg and bearnaise.
  20. This thread is more like a Zingerman's thread, so here's my two cents. I had a great dinner at Zingerman's Roadhouse a few months ago. First, they have some great cocktails- had a nice pisco sour and old fashioned with the meal. We chatted with the manager- he was a trained pediatrician who decided this was more fun to do. For appetizers we had the chicken livers and an order of the ancho beef chili & cheddar twice cooked fries. For dinner I had the carolina bbq plate which was good, but my friend's chicken fried sirloin was even better. For dessert, had Ari’s Original Doughnut Sundae-a housemade doughnut with bourbon-caramel sauce, vanilla gelato, whipped cream, salted Virginia peanuts and a cherry on top- so good. pics
  21. Called them this morning- they are open today! I'm headed there for a late lunch- hello spicy pork bellies!
  22. I had one of the most amazing dining experiences this past weekend in NY- We went to Sik Gaek, a Korean restaurant in Flushing in Queens. They are famous for their Chul Pan, or "iron plate" cooking- comparable to shabu shabu or Chinese hot pot. They are also well know for dishes with live octopus! The atmosphere of the place was convivial with everyone eating large pots of seafood and stews and drinking beer and soju. We ordered the San Nakji- live octopus, legs cut up and brought to tableside still moving with garlic, jalapeno and dipping sauces (gochuchang or the sesame oil & salt). The fact that the octopus was so fresh made it so delicious. We also got the Nak Bool Combi Chulpan, a large hotpot of spicy broth chock full of seafood (mussels, giant clams, shrimp, baby octopus), veggies (cabbage, bean sprouts, cucumber), rice duplings and udon noodles. Ours had raw ribeye beef and the piece de resistance was a single live octopus plopped on top. It took about 5 minutes to cook and the result was so delicious. My favorite part was the rice dumplings eaten at the end of the meal after they had soaked for an hour. Their soju selection was good too- we had a cucumber infused soju, but next time we need to order the watermelon soju that's served from half a melon. pics and video!! 161-29 Crocheron Ave. Flushing, New York, NY‎ (718) 321-7770‎
  23. FYI- There is a No Reservations night with Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert in conversation at Baltimore's Hippodrome theater on Sat May 22nd- tickets are not yet on sale yet, but it looks like there's a package where local Baltimore restaurants are catering food for the event.
  24. On last night's No Reservations in Harbin, China, they actually showed the exterior of a restaurant advertising dog, a traditional dish up in the northern China. Unfortunately, Tony did not go in- it would have probably freaked out American viewers.
