  1. I've heard more talk about this episode then the rest of the ones combined. It's linked everywhere. Heck, they might start looking for more episodes like this...I wonder how soon before Restaurant: Impossible (a shameful love of mine) will have something similar. It almost has before...
  2. So this year's SOFIC trip: * Centro Catina - not worth it * Tampa Bay Brewing Company - some good beers, and I had a great blackened swordfish sandwich for lunch. * Nicahabana Cigars - they roll them there, and have coffee/espresso/etc. Didn't have caffeine, but the cigars were inexpensive and are quite great. * King Corona Cigars - more great cigars, and a decent booze selection. Very friendly folks! I will definitely devote a couple of hours to visiting there again. * Bad Monkey - bar owned by former 2 star spec ops general. Mostly military and first responders, but friendly, fun spot.
  3. I'm so lucky to have parents that are still around, and that I'm so close to, as mine. And I try to make sure they know it regularly. This year for mother's day my brother and I visited with his new puppy, so it was quite the trip. Mom made cream cheese filled jalapenos wrapped in bacon and smoked, but she didn't completely deseed or take out the ribs. They were too spicy for dad and my brother, so mom and I ate extras and made fun of them. And I know that like other little things that happen on holidays, that will probably become a tradition, or at least a well-worn anecdote.
  4. I still can't wait to swim this summer! (Okay, let's leave it at "float and try not to get harpooned" but we'll work on it from there.)
  5. Some of the writing made me think "Tom, you're just trying too hard" but overall I liked it. What I *REALLY* like is the way the Post has been doing some of their features now online. They look beautiful, and if they are going to use a paywall, it makes it more likely (come on, it was already very likely) that I'll pay for the content.
  6. http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/california-winerys-ads-pair-product-sex-drugs-and-more-sex-149523 I love love LOVE the way they describe their wines. "It comes in a bottle!" Overall, I found the ads quite humorous. And while yes, I am a huge sucker for marketing, these commercials would make it much more likely I'd try them on a whim than, say, the name of their wine.
  7. People feel the need to be heard, and comment threads on news sites seem to let them voice their (often vitrolic) opinions in a consequence-free environment. They have spread their WISDOM (and any deniers can be ignored/shouted down). Look at Twitter - that same need "to be heard" no matter the size/quality of the audience (and yes, I am guilty of that too). The difference between someone who only shouts without listening (comments thread posters, Twitter users who don't interact with others, etc) and someone (for example) who posts here is that here, you have accountability, and you will be taken to task for what you say. And that's why it's higher quality.
  8. To my neighbors, who are a pretty cool couple. The three years I lived in Courthouse I never knew any of my neighbors except through outside agencies (such as when goodeats lived in my building) but last night Marshall and I sat outside grilling and smoking cigars with my neighbor, and it's good to have neighbors you can hang out with. Also, we got to name the fat ole raccoon Charles, and then Marshall scared Charles up the tree where we were sitting, and he didn't fall back down on us, so that was a good thing.
  9. So in the US they do Applebee's and La Tagliatella. Interesting. Looks like they have a deal with Yum! for eastern Europe... (I haven't been to a non-airport Applebee's in ages. And in the airport, all I ordered was beer after beer after beer, given that I was stuck in LAX for 6+ hours.)
  10. I do like most of the others if I met them off of there. It's similar to what happens at events like Tales, it seems, which is why I had my ambush marketer shirts made saying "i follow you on twitter" or "i think we're facebook friends" on the back.
  11. I've gone there twice now - yesterday was the latest time, while my bike was being checked next door. Got the traditional, used some brown sauce on it, man, that was good. Michael was regaling some customers with stories... I know I've made Marshall jealous since he hasn't been there yet.
  12. Erp! Must slipped passed me. Rum was the hard one, since there are so many of them. I went with what I typically drink, and honestly, I don't think I have a bottle of Flor de Cana in my house! (I do like to promote Chairman's Reserve a lot because Clyde Davis is local and just a great guy - and I'm a big fan of his product too.)
  13. I had one Rogue beer in my fridge and I drank it last night. No more for me...and now to get my ass down to Hogo to get some of RJ's food this week, and if things go well with the lady friend, see about bringing her to R24 to help support *our* Rogue!
  14. Was that posted, or was that just the bartender or server saying that? Because it doesn't make sense unless they haven't gotten their off site license yet. But a lot of times people get confused about ABC regs.
  15. If you have any feedback on this article I wrote for Plum Deluxe, I'd appreciate it. http://www.plumdeluxe.com/upgrade-your-liquor
  16. I just checked and I don't seem to have any ability to create sub-forums. I think you'll need to ping Don.
  17. Yeah, I was just reminded of that on Twitter. I never saw the cease-and-desist personally, but there was no love for Rogue beer in the NOLA bartending community due to it. EDIT: Another mention of it: http://www.kindredcocktails.com/review/beta-cocktails
  18. Perhaps Jake can confirm this, but wasn't it Rogue beer who also sued the NOLA bartenders who wrote a cocktail guide called something with the word "Rogue" in it?
  19. When they talked about the wounds in the WaPo article, it was briefly mentioned that the butchering appeared to happen after she was dead, as there were no signs of a struggle.
  20. After a brunch date on Sunday, I went over to Beuchert's to harass Anthony. I overhead a dish that was oxtail sausage gravy and biscuits, or something like that? HOLY CRAP I MUST HAVE THAT IN MY STOMACH (PS they might be making the best Ramos Gin Fizz in town right now, and they use a mixer for it, so it comes out quickly.)
  21. If you read his column, today was his last one. I haven't always agreed with him, though in the past few years I've found that he's a fun, nice guy to hang out with in person. And I've enjoyed most of his writing, but it sounds like it's on his own terms with what he wants to do. I do wish him luck on his book about wine that he's writing. I'll be curious if the Post hires someone to replace him, or just lets the column go away...
  22. Ditto. I had so many jokes ready! Okay, maybe not so many. Just a couple. (Personally, while I find the concept of eating sushi off nude models funny in theory, I also find it quite skeevy.)
