  1. So the more crap you post the more credibility you have on Yelp? (I don't mean you personally of course). That's a self-fulfilling prophecy.
  2. There were several entree dishes I wanted to try last night but I ended up with the halibut - it was a nicely seared piece of fish and I liked the scallion chili sauce. The oysters were on the small side and the cheddar jalepeno fritters had no discernable heat or jalepeno. I rank J&G up there with the other upscale steakhouses (maybe a little higher because they have more seafood but my favorite in the area remains Bourbon Steak).
  3. Went there for dinner last Friday. I told my wife if the guy says "chinese pizza" again, I'd never go back. Fortunately for the House of Fortune, the waiter didn't make any comments on our scallion pancake. All I wanted was some noodle soup for my sore throat so I ordered a pickled cabbage with shredded pork noodle soup and my wife had chicken with black bean sauce and beef and broccoli. The latter two dishes were really good as far as American Chinese food goes, the quality of the ingredients and the saucing were both much better than the other Chinese joints in McLean/Vienna. Wish they deliver.
  4. I've been there a couple of times for lunch and the food was dreadful. Clearly I don't know what's good there. Next time I'll try one of the dishes you suggested.
  5. A little peeved that Palena is closed tonight for a private function. We got there at 5:30 to eat at the cafe but no go. It didn't occur to me to call in advance since they don't take reservation for the cafe.
  6. It can't be the "best of" since it's not the fifty best restaurants in DC and it's not the best of DC's restaurants in various categories as there's no representation for Chinese and various other cuisines. I'm not in the marketing/advertising business but it seems like you are. Could you explain why the dining guide is a marketing-ploy and for whom?
  7. I've gone to Pho -N-More in Vienna twice now but I still haven't tried their pho. Instead, I've tried a couple of Thai-ish noodle soups. The first was Tsunami: "minced pork, mixed seafood ball, bean sprout, chinese broccoli, crushed peanut, cilantro n scallion in spicy broth." This tastes suspiciously like floating market noodle soup at Nava Thai - a sour and spicy soup with a brown broth. I'm not saying it's great but it's good to know that I don't have to go to Wheaton for FMNS. Today I tried the Tornado: "a new version of “Pad Thai” minced chicken, tofu, preserved radish, bean sprout, green bean, crushed peanut, cilantro n scallion in spicy broth." It wasn't really spicy, more sweet and sour in a clear broth (a flavor combination that's not my favorite). Both times I also ordered a plate of spicy basil stir fried with mixed veggies - reasonably tasty. Menu
  8. I assume the seared halibut with scallion chili sauce is still a safe bet? I made a reservatiuon awhile back to meet a friend there this weekend. I've never been to J&G so I think I'm going to keep the reservation and give this place a shot. I don't really expect much, just hoping for non-redmeat edible food. BTW, the online menu has the halibut at $28. They really raised the price by 27% in this economy?
  9. That's my guess without doing any research because that's something I grew up eating.
  10. I meant to go A&J for some noodle soup but none of the nearby roads cooperated. Rt. 123 was closed at Tysons and I couldn't get on 495 south so I ended up heading north, then got off on GW Parkway heading into the city, then back onto 66 to go to Arlington. All that for noodle soup, which I suspected wouldn't be very good at Minh's (which proved correct), fortunately I also ordered a plate of fried catfish. A big filet of catfish, basically entire half of a catfish, expertly breaded and seasoned, fried perfectly. And dipping it in the fish sauce was fantastic. Despite getting the noodle soup first, I left half a bowl of noodles but there were no fish left.
  11. They didn't come with oysters, that's what's sad I don't think I can convince my wife to go back to To Sok Jib (she can't stand the smell) - we won't be having any more kids if we do.
  12. I had their bo ssäm at the Centreville location. Quite a lot of rather bland and fatty pork. It being the only time I've ever had bo ssäm, I didn't know what to make of it. I have no problem eating pigskin or pig fat but I generally like them flavored. It was accompanied with a nice garlicky chili paste. Any suggestion as to where else to try bo ssäm (other than Momofuku)? No oysters though. Hmm....a bo ssäm Tuesday (not necessarily here though)?
  13. I've been to Sushi Taro (for omakase at the sushi bar) 3 times in the last 2 years, more than any other restaurant that costs $100+ per person just for food. The quality of sashimi is much higher at Sushi Taro than Komi (overall I like Komi better). Just sayin' that Sushi Taro's sushi bar deserves at least 3.5 stars in my book (which admittedly, doesn't mean much).
  14. Todd has a point - Tom gave Minibar 2 stars, that's not exactly an enthusiastic endorsement and that in and of itself probably pissed off Andres to no end. Andres' English may not be very good but he knows 2 out of 4 stars ain't shit.
  15. I wonder if that isn't "Clifton" from the Washingtonian chats cause that post has the same stench.
  16. Would you hazard as guess as to the trans fat and saturated fat in a pasty? I do luv me some pasties and I eat them when traveling (Niagara on the Lakes has quite few pasty shoppes) but I can't imagine indulging on a regular basis. Nevertheless, I'll have to try some at the Pure Pasty Co.
  17. The fillings and the pastries are both different between a pasty and an empanada. The more difficult question is what's the difference between an empanada and saltena. No egg goes into an pasty AFAIK, and no olives. The pasty crust is more like a pie crust - very flaky. These are my personal observations - I wouldn't know whether pasty fillings are pre-cooked or not.
  18. The speculation is that Morimoto is leaving. I have no clue if that's true or not - I don't actually watch ICA.
  19. Enjoy your trip to New Orleans grumpy man!
