  1. Time Magazine profiles Tyrell's: http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/art...1707550,00.html
  2. Most places in DC are boring me right now. One place that I still get excited about is Rasika.
  3. Maybe they should go on the Tunks Tour instead Ceiba TenPenh DC Coast Acadiana
  4. You could do the Jose Andres Penn Quartet (hahaha) Jaleo Oyamel Zaytinya Cafe Atlantico Although that would be a bit nightmare-ish on a Friday night!
  5. I discovered that Amazon seems to have so many shipping centers in the Mid-Atlantic region that even when you select the free super saver shipping you usually get it within 2-3 days.
  6. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good Japanese cook book (not sushi-specific)...something that has a good selection of veggie and fish dishes (but again not necessarily just sushi). Brother and sister-in-law are fairly adventurous cooks so moderate to advanced level cook book is ok.
  7. Michael Mina makes a mean tater tot.
  8. Vidalia opps didn't see the NOVA part. If money is no object then you might as well go check out what the new chef at 2941 is dishing up.
  9. I'm in the keep 7th Street closed on the weekends camp, it was always a clusterfuck with traffic and pedestrians and with it closed it gives the area a more street festival atmosphere. As for Paik, as I recall, the couple that had owned it for years in the old market eventually bought the chicken stand next to it and where running both. They then sold (?) to the Asian couple that runs the Paik produce stand now. However, the chicken stand (across from Paik in the new set up) now appear to be run by the hispanic couple that is always manning the stand (but not sure if they actually are now the owners).
  10. Granville Moore's is the best option but gets packed and with no room to stand inside people wait out on the street...which can be chilly this time of year (well not today). The Argie is you basic dive bar and you should find seating. The food is standard bar food, apps, sandwiches etc. with a couple entree type things, yes even hanger steak! although I was there two weekends ago and they we breaking in a new chef so what ever that is worth. Definitely get the sweet potato fries. There are also a couple of Jamaican joints on H street. I've had take out once from Naby's at 12th and H Street and it was decent and low priced. The dining room consists of a couple cafeteria style glass top tables and is basic but if you are in the mood for some island flava could be a good alternative.
  11. I've been rather underwhelmed by the Calomaris stands offerings too. Probably in the past year or two the asian couple that was running Paik left (sold out?). Honestly for basic produce (bananas, onions, potatoes etc.) I don't think either is any better or worse than Safeway and I much prefer the seasonal produce (when available) sold outside, but if I just need an handful of things Calomaris and Paik do the trick. Plus I've noticed Dan (the guy outside who gets a lot of stuff from PA) has been missing for the last month or so...hopefully he is just taking the winter off.
  12. Mostly he was hanging out in the 9th Ward and other destroyed districts, visting restaurants, shrimpers, telling the story of the New Orleans restaurant workers, and efforts to recover etc. I thought it was well done...no doubt this will be his "emmy nominated" episode, like Beruit last season. He did have a good line about how he wasn't sellout by giving Emeril new-found respect, but Rachel Ray still sucks.
  13. As cjsadler says quick, easy, and delicious! After I made it a couple times I was inspired with a new idea. I took this recipe, modified it and turned it into a curried butternut squash puree Chop the squash into 1/2 inch chunks Toss them with olive oil, salt, pepper, and curry powder (omit the chickpeas, cayenne pepper, yogurt sauce) roast at 400 for about 45-50 minutes until very soft mash with butter and cream until like mashed potato
  14. I ordered mine on a wednesday and they arrived on a Monday...I shipped them to my work address, so they might have been sitting at the post office over the weekend. You might want to follow up with the company.
  15. Foodscout.org, stumbled across this new website...find "general information, nutrients that food provides, and ways in which that food may benefit your health and beauty."

  17. You mean New Jersey Swamp Stew.
  18. Vanilla Beans arrived vacuum sealed in the mail today!
  19. I was shopping at a small gourmet deli across the street from Eastern Market last week and bought a Kingsbury chocolate, some sort of dark chocolate espresso concoction (one of those impulse ohhh that looks tasty I'll buy one moments)...wrong it was dense and flavorless. didn't even finish it.
  20. Found curry leaves! An important ingredient when making S. Indian food. Every once in a while Yes Gourmet carries curry leaves but they are always crap. Go to Paik Produce, it is the produce stand on the 8th Street end of EM. Looked like the small refrigerator case in back had a collection of asian oriented herbs, spices, and produce.
  21. well I would have to rate Farrah Olivia my best RW experience for 2008. There was the usual game of here's the menu but you can order other stuff with upcharges, some of them reaching $12(!) for an upcharge, so I stayed with the set menu. Dinner started with a goat cheese flan amuse, creamy goodness, and a basket of bread with four different spreads. Bread was decent and the spreads while somewhat interesting where more flash than substance. My favorite was the butter laced with mango and rosemary(?) I started with the white grits, which was sort of a large white grit tater tot shaped thing, lightly breaded and fried, it came sitting on a bed of candied red cabbage and liquid black corn...it was excellent. Next I had the pork chop, perfectly cooked and moist served on a bed of lentils and spinach which could have used a tad bit more salt for my taste. Dessert I had the lemon cheesecake which was light, fluffy, and lemony. Dinner ended with a selection of petit fours. I also sampled the painted soup (one half of the bowl chestnut, the other gingered butternut squash) which overall was tasty, the ginger in the butternut squash was a bit harsh. The pan roasted chicken breast with banana curry crust was average (but that's what you get for ordering chicken breast IMO), but I liked the quinoa salad The orange scented salmon fillet was perhaps the best cooked piece of salmon I've ever had...it came with a fermented yucca couscous which kind of tasted and had the texture of grape nuts cereal (it was weird at first but kinda addictive by the end)...the venison was also very good. Overall it was a positive RW experience and I would definitely return.
  22. ok, just put in an order for 20 Tahitian Vanilla Beans 6-7" long for a whopping $8.95 including shipping. FU Safeway!
