  1. I enjoyed a lovely lunch with my co-workers on the patio of Tabard Inn this afternoon...slightly overcast but wonderful temperature for dining outdoors. Started with the pork terrine and rabbit rilletes, a nice simple presentation with a slice of toasted baguette, cornichons, and salad greens. Entree was a soft shell crab (I haven't had nearly enough soft shells this summer) which was served over some watercress and tropical fruit salsa and emulsion. I knew when I ordered the dish that I wasn't going to like the salsa and emulsion, but damn it, I wanted a softy...and I was right, the fruit elements just weren't my cup of tea...but the crab was damn tasty! The Tabard Inn patio really is a jewel.
  2. All I have to say is Padma with her hair in those braided pig tails...HOT!
  3. Rehoboth Just got back from several days in Rehoboth...so I'll add my 2 cents to the list... Back Porch Cafe - The sort of place where ambiance out weighs the cooking. You're at the beach, you're relaxed, feeling kinda crispy from sitting on the beach all day, the weather is perfect, you're enjoying the company of your friends...$30 for overcooked roast guinea hen, well the setting is nice, and I did mention you're enjoying the company of friends. Seemed like the chef was going for the big time and not completely pulling it off. Perhaps too ambitious of a menu would be a good way of putting it...but lovely ambiance. Eden Restaurant - A dressed up place that could easily pass for a restaurant in say the Penn Quarter. The food while still pricey, more $30 entrees, was more even then Back Porch. We enjoyed the Lobster and crab tower, the flatbread with duck confit could have used a little more punch, the seared tuna was excellent, scallops yummy, and lamb chops nicely rare...the one clanger was the chicken breast with house made fettuccine, but then again that's what you get for ordering chicken breast Summer House - Your basic nicely appointed saloon style bar and grill...a place that might perhaps sprout from the minds of the Clyde's Group. Doing the basics here, large sandwiches, burgers, salads, etc. etc. Nothing to complain about, nothing to write home about...but a pleasent place to have lunch. Funnel Cake...yes you must buy some on the boardwalk and enjoy it on the beach...I mean you are on vacation after all
  4. Sable fish seems to be all the rage lately...I won't call it trite, but perhaps trite on notice.
  5. cool! Hopefully this will brighten the somewhat dismal dining options south of Dupont Circle!
  6. I hit Casa Oaxaca with a native Guadalajarian Friday...needless to say I let her do all the ordering since this gringo No hablo de Spanish. It's a nice place, taking Mexican beyond the store front mom and pop joints that most DC "Mexican" places tend to be. Two levels, upstairs is a fairly traditional looking dining room, downstairs has a long bar and a more cantina feel to it. We begged and pleaded until we were given a small dish of the grasshoppers, which were salty and limey and tasty. We started with the Ravioli de Huitlacoche (Huitlacoche ravioli in a squash blossom and poblano sauce). I had never had huitlacoche before, comparasions to truffles were apt, but much less pungent. This was a tasty dish in a messy explosion on a plate kind of way. Next we had the Mole Negro Oaxaqueí±o (Black mole from Oaxaca, served over chicken breast), which we both thought was rather disappointing. I've never had real mole before, and hoped this would be the transcendent experience one dreams of while reading about the labor involved in making a real mole. This was kinda bland. The chef even admitted that what they serve in the dining room was a dumbed down version, the kitchen staff spices it up for themselves. We suggested that they don't dumb it down for the Americans. He seemed to take that to heart. We also ordered Las Deliciosas Carnitas Tacos (Tender pork in Guajillo and garlic sauce), which were pretty kick ass. Three heaping tacos with shredded pork. Both of us were disappointed by the rice and beans, the rice tasted like Uncle Ben's. Dinner was finished off with some very tasty flan. Overall I get the impression that this will be one of those places where you learn to love a handful of dishes that you end up ordering over and over again. The tequila was great and I'd definitely order the tacos again. Hopefully they will learn that when the gringos come we want the stuff the kitchen staff is eating and not the dumbed down stuff they think we should be eating.
  7. Construction of the temporary building which will house the displaced indoor merchants has begun...they were putting up the roofing and wall support beams this morning...hopefully that will be a quick process!
  8. Rasika was on point last night. Started with a selection of small plates Palak Chat (The much talked about Crispy Spinach) Tawa Baingan (Eggplant and Potato Napolean, was excellent) Calamari Chili Garlic (last time I had it the presentation and flavors were cleaner, but was still tasty) Main Course we split an entree and veggie side dish and a basket of bread Lamb Roganjosh (da bomb, lamb was so tender, sauce was awesome) Dal Makhani (I love this dish, lentils taken to their highest level of creamy rich goodness) Dessert Cardamon ice cream (a simple refreshing way to end dinner)
  9. That's one thing I like about Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel, he'll tell you if it tastes like crap. RR could be eating a plate of poo and she would be moaning about how good it tastes.
  10. Went to Kaz for the first time last night...very nice! We started with some braised short ribs which were falling apart awesome...the grilled baby octopus were very chewy and not so good. We ordered 4 selections of sushi: sea urchin, eel, seared salmon belly and scallops poached in sake...The salmon and scallops were melt in your mouth fantastic. we also had 2 rolls, yellow fin and tuna tartar, both were adequate but nothing too exciting. Saki of the month was servicable. So some big hits and a couple misses, but I think with a couple of visits one can weed out the misses...hell I'd go back today for lunch to have the short ribs, salmon belly and scallops!
  11. And now the nomination for the worst charcuterie plate in DC...Firefly. limp lifeless mounds of three meats that pretty much tasted the same. Scattered with some chopped chives and a pot of yellow substance that might have been mustard. Not so nice.
  12. Put me in the dance music camp...some Sasha and Digweed goes nicely or LTJ Bukem (nice one demandalicious!)
  13. Not sure you want to call Sonoma romantic, but my friend and I got away with $100 (pre tip) there on Monday...we split the lamb tartar, grilled prawns, a pizza, and a 3 piece cheese plate with 2 add ons (the nuts and the figs) and had 2 drinks (prosecco and beer) each. Ditch the drinks and nuts and figs and you could easily drop the price down or splurge for an extra course. You could do something similar at Rasika (order several small plates, one entree, and a veggie side dish) and be under the $100 mark. If you don't order wine (well you could by the glass) you can also dine at Montmartre, apps are in the $7-$10 range and entrees are in the high teens to low 20s.
  14. Man I guess it's Sonoma's week to get pissed on! we still love you guys...especially the white pizza with sopresseta...yumm-o
  15. I'm sorry the words "pretty" "decent" "veggie" "burger" should never follow each other in a sentence. Veggie alternatives to perfectly good meat products should be added to the trite list...or banned as a human rights violation.
  16. I walked past the other day and there were tons of permits and stop work notices and paper on the windows. There is a sign up above the windows, but this place has been in the works for what over a year? There is also a place which looks pretty trendy and hip on 8th that is being worked on...can't remember the name though
  17. My parents dragged my brother and I to the Bonefish Grill in Myrtle Beach it sucked. Four times we had to go through the waitress asking us what "Awesome Side" we would like. I cut her off before my head exploded. It epitomized everything that is wrong with corporate run mass dining. I don't even know what the F**k you guys are arguing about on this thread, but that's my rant about Bonefish. Play on.
  18. and I'm sure you were buying good quality scrapie free lamb
  19. That was post tongue removal...I had to crack open the jaw to get it all out!
  20. The lamb brain smeared on some bread was delicious...until my brother warned me about the link between lamb offal and mad cow disease...so if the next time you see me I'm drooling and disoriented, really that's not my normal disposition! Otherwise DR Spring Picnic 2007 was...BRILLIANT New signature is operational...thanks Mel
