  1. sampled some items at Le Pain Cap Hill last week...medicore at best. The melted goat cheese pear tartine was acceptable. The lentil stew with chicken and sausage was fairly weak, the sausage seemed low grade quality and the chunks of chicken only slightly better than one would find in good can of soup. The lemon tart perhaps a step up from grocery store level. Based on several other recommendations I will go back and sample their loaves of bread. Perhaps the funniest part is their menus list the calories of each item (as required under New York City law.)
  2. Just had a couple slices for lunch at the Cleveland Park store, pepperoni and white with spinach, for $3 and change. Make sure you poke around the refrigerator cases.
  3. The winners for me were: Cumin Lamb cod dish beef (tripe) & beef tenderloin preserved pork (think bacon) spicy riblets tea smoked duck stir fried pork with chili pepper. well worth the trip over the river.
  4. I'm going to start the theory that if you are from the city that appears on No Reservations then you are unhappy about the episode. The DC people are complaining. I'm off to Puerto rico in a couple weeks and I've noticed the PR people complain about the PR episode. My sister-in-law is from S. Korea and she was mocking the Korean episode. Just an observation...
  5. we all know Top Chef has jumped the shark with product placement...fine, Glad Ware is ponying up the dough so they get ample face time, the wall of Diet Dr. Pepper, close ups of the stove, even the end of the show beer drinking with Brooklyn Beer, but last night's opening sequence with the I Heart Padma t-shirt (oh look someone made a cute I Heart Padma t-shirt, nope nope now available for sale on the Bravo website) was just silly. This season is just becoming weaker and weaker. 9 chefs and the best we get after foraging through that beautiful garden is some well fried green tomatoes, a nice pie crust, and some chicken. Yawn.
  6. Anyone remember Ruffles Cajun Spice...I guuuaaaarrraaannnteeee! http://www.spike.com/video/ruffles-cajun-s...728012?cid=YSSP
  7. Anyone else feel...odd (or old!)...that we have been following the adventures of Veggie-teen for so many years that she now has a Veggie-bf. Sigh, they grow up so fast
  8. definitely the sweet breads at Bar Pilar. Should be on the short list for dish of the year! Roast goat shoulder at Komi
  9. The Saveur 100 is the worst issue of the year, and this year was no exception...five types of salt, six types of oil... That said I might try and make the various condiment recipes they have sprinkled throughout. and the red snapper and veggie lasagna recipes...so maybe it won't be a complete waste.
  10. Face it people, snarky comments just sound better when said with a british accent
  11. On my holiday drive back from the folks place in NC I stopped off at Bill Ellis' World Famous Barbecue and Chicken (4 stains on Holly Eats) in Wilson, NC. http://www.bills-bbq.com/ I have stopped off at Moore's in Kenly multiple times and it is a small mom and pop operation that recently expanded by taking over an old fast food joint. Previously Moore's was a little hut with a couple of tables. Not so with Bill Ellis, which can only be called an institution. In fact the place is so large it has seperate buildings for take out/drive thru, sit down dining, and a 18,000 square foot convention center! They even have their own hog farm. I caught the place in mid-after church rush and with the line at the sit down restaurant snaking out the door, opted for the take out and dined on the nearby picnic tables...with a lovely view of Sheetz next door. My impressions: The Pulled Pork sandwich was decent, perhaps not as good as Moore's. The fried chicken drumstick was shriveled, the thigh succulent, but I still preferred Moore's. The bag of fried chicken gizzards ($2.60 a bag!) chewy and salty. My disappointment: Each order came with a handful of Texas Pete's Hotsauce pouches. Yeah, weak. It's worth the short side trip off the I95 to see the operation, it's maybe a 10 minute drive off the Wilson exits (not sure of the exit number). I would like to try the dine in. The BBQ is soild, the chicken decent, it beats the Fastfood Hell on 95, and you have to love a place that sells bags of chicken gizzards to go!
  12. Dan you left out the infamous "The Last Meal" question! Rachel, what is your final meal?
  13. Wabeck used caul fat to make the lamb meatballs he served at some DR get together we had in the Firefly lounge several years ago...maybe he can be helpful.
  14. Corduroy...same great food, brand new location Marvin
  15. Not to be a sour apple martini... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...ml?hpid=topnews "Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) objected to including nightclubs in the council's legislation, but he has said he will abide by the council's wishes and sign the law. However, Congress has the final say over District matters under the 1973 Home Rule Act that gave the city some self-governing authority."
  16. "Best oysters in town" "Crabcakes are the house specialty" "Try the fried oyster stew" Faced with a full back bar, hawking dishes, and filling drink orders, Joe the bartender put the whirl in dervish last night at a completely slammed, who says there's a recession, Old Ebbitt Grill. Grilled oysters, get two orders Little necks, succulent Oyster stew, rich with cream The seafood jambalaya...meh.
  17. Wash Post reporting Redwood is chef-less http://voices.washingtonpost.com/goingoutg...d=news-col-blog
  18. Sounds exciting...although the "franchising" link on their website might give one pause. However, considering I also have never stepped foot in A&A or Dottie's...it can only be a (hopefully) positive development!
  19. It's going to be a four day weekend...might as well spend it drunk.
  20. Northamption is a charming and quaint college town with an old fashion "high" street shopping area along side Smith College. Shopping ranges from kitsch, to the latest in hempware, to high end gifts (pottery, glassware, etc.) from local artisans. However, after three years, my brother and wife have decided that dining is a real minefield. The aforementioned Green Street Cafe (64 Green Street), is a little off the main beaten path but well worth seeking out. Cozy and warm by the fireplace this is a restaurant that cares about food. Highlights at lunch included the mussels, steak sandwich and pot au creme. Also check out their wine bar and cheese offerings. Also worth seeking out is Joe's Pizza, a completely townie dive. Good pizza and make sure you get an order of the spanish style mussels.
  21. This year we decided to stuff the turkey and instead we are cooking up a Korean feast. (sister-in-law is korean). Yum!
