  1. Other than the Chicken & Sausage Gumbo Progresso soup I had for lunch...I enjoy the roast duck pho at Pacific Cafe & Grill on the Hill. One of their few good dishes.
  2. This was about to fall to page 3! Might stretch the $20 limit but Four Sister's in the near future? Sietsema weighs in with 3 stars for their new location http://www.foursistersrestaurant.com/ http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog/restaura...1.html?hpid=gog
  3. I concur, had one sub there and it was ok...nothing to draw me back and of course the hours don't help. If you are going to trek across town for a sub, you might be better served by A. Litteri in the Florida Avenue Market
  4. Samphan, the new Thai restaurant now occupying the old Hunan King spot on Pennsylvania Avenue near the Eastern Market metro station, turned around the space in record time. New paint, new furniture, wall decorations with a Pier One sensibility...considering the grunginess of Hunan they actually did a decent job of making the space a some what cozy ethnic store front. Perhaps they should have spent more time working on their recipes. All the Thai classics are here...the menu is identical to any number of Thai restaurants around the area. Unfortunately the cooking falls in the overly sweet, mostly bland, safe for the American palette that is also identical to any number of Thai restaurants around the area. Sigh No doubt they will have a thriving take-out business, the menu is inexpensive (most entrees are $10-$14), it's convenient to the metro, and it's quick and easy for getting your Thai, albeit medicore, fix.
  5. Sports place will be Italian according to the liquor board notice posted on the window. They were still cleaning out the store this weekend, so not sure how long it will take to turn it into a restaurant. Samphan is also now open in the Hunan King spot.
  6. So what's taking over the Bread & Chocolate space?...they have now closed and stuff being auctioned.
  7. Delicate pieces of lobster held together in mayo...not sure what else was in there. Golden toasted slices of buttery brioche. Mixed green salad topped with wafer thin slices of radish. Simple but de-lish.
  8. was I the first Rockwellian to take advantage? Showed up at 1pm yesterday for the inaugural 3 couses 25 bucks meal deal at Corduroy...a truly civilized way to spend lunch. The menu features roughly 6-7 choices per course. we opened with two classics, the goat cheese potato nest and the Ron Jeremy spring rolls. Followed up with roast pork (cooked to a perfectly pink medium rare) with frisee-potato salad and the lobster sandwich with mixed greems, both first rate. Ended with the squash tart (a vast improvement from when we first sampled it at the Rockwell Dinner so many years ago) and the bread pudding. Go...Now.
  9. everytime I have been to Bar Pilar it has been obscenely packed. Taking advantage of the Veterans Day 4 Day weekend, I showed up at 6pm on Monday...first person there! I will second, third...10th...the Sweetbreads, excellent with chantrelle mushrooms. We also sampled the chicken liver pate very nice but they need to give you more bread, we had to reorder bread twice since the pot of pate is so large! Spanish anchovies on toasted bread also excellent. The Sunchokes were merely ok. This place is a gem.
  10. After a 6 week renovation of the basement, they have put the "Lounge" into Capitol Lounge. Gone is the smell of vomit, urine, dead rat, and industrial cleaner, replaced with new floors, low slung seating, trendy cube shaped stools and tables. The new beer list offers almost 50 beers by bottle, housed in a large glass cooler behind the bar. 12 taps are going in soon. More renovations to the upstairs are coming. The beer list includes Common Bud/Bud Light Stella Sierra Nevada Blue Moon Bass Newcastle Less Common Rogue Dead Guy Smuttynose Old Brown Dog Three types of Chimay Bells' Porter Rare Ommegang Hennepin 750 ml ($21) Moa Original 750 ml ($20) Eggenberg Dubbelbock Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale (in a can)
  11. Johhny's Half Shell is also running a free drink promo.
  12. Swung by Jaleo after an afternoon at the National Gallery (Pompeii exhibit, while packed, was medicore, unless you are into marble busts of dead Romans)...anyhoo... the star tapa was the braised boneless pork rib with potato puree, falling apart pork capped with a melting layer of fat. oh yeah!
  13. As dirty and nasty as it is, the Chinese takeout on 8th Street (China wall?), across the street from the fire station does great drunk Chinese food...General Tso chicken dripping in too much batter and sauce drunk Chinese food that is Go with the combo platter with pork fried rice and an egg roll for like $8. BTW, has anyone ever been to the Chinese Restaurant (Young Chow) around Connecticut and 3rd...next door to the Mexican/Salvadorean place. I often see bus loads of asians being herded there.
  14. woo hoo...I've been waiting for over a decade for the Bread & Chocolate space to close and become something else!
  15. Thanks again for a great meal and delicious birds of all different kinds! The little quail meatballs and the grouse were the standout for me! Honorable mentions to the liver parfait amuse, foie gras and chestnut soup, and the partridge salami. All rounded off by the delicious Pumpkin Pie 2008. I believe we had two winners in the "shot"glass competition. Thanks for taking the time to join us at the end. See you soon...for a snout to tail dinner perhaps? I believe ScotteeM has photos.
  16. I just pulled off my first batch of cured salmon following the recipe in Charcuterie: The Craft of Salting, Smoking, and Curing. I used a one pound slab of center cut wild salmon, took about 3.5 days to fully cure. For a first time curer the results were pretty damn good. This is a basic process which anyone can undertake...no fancy chemicals, jerry-rigged fridges or ham legs involved (sorry Ferment!)
  17. The duck and fig terrine was soldout by 8:30pm Saturday night so I had to settle for the duck confit...it was most excellent. The applewood bacon/ale mussels were also mighty tasty. I've been twice now and really like the joint.
  18. It maybe the crack baby of the coffee world, but best mocha ever! The ginger tea is also very good.
  19. my oh my this is a tasty restaurant, well worth the trip from Capitol Hill...makes one almost think about moving to Rockville...almost. My favorites were the fried chicken, braised pork over rice, potstickers, wontons in chili sauce (?), and the tripe...the rest was merely good!
  20. Directions have been mapquested...so I'll be there.
  21. I'm still in! Come on people let's get this done!
  22. oh oh...last time we did this it was da bomb! Count me in please. Now how the hell do I get out to Rockville again???
