  1. I think Dave has a point. Act like you are running for office. Walk around, meet people. Hand me a free drink coupon and I will show, with coupon, and friends. My whole neighborhood can walk there and did we ever receive "paper" from them? No. I lost a cat once and found that cat based on a flyer on a poll on that bike path that my neighbors would use to walk to Vinoteca. Flyer that. It might piss of some, but get the attention of others.
  2. Thank you. ALMOST booked a business lunch there. This from DCDeb: I'm early 40s and boss is in his 70s Ditto my girl.
  3. Since it opened, I've been 4 or 5 times and most recently went to dinner on May 28, which was a Thursday, I think. I really like it. I keep going back mostly because I can walk but also because I love the food and service. I've had the same waiter twice and he's so sweet. I've had the veggie stew twice as well and it's worth the trip at $8. The gambas al ajillo are amazing and now SER simply serves bread with it; no need to ask any longer. On our last visit my husband and I shared the medium sized seafood platter. The $40 platter comes with ½ dz oysters, 4 truly "colossal" shrimp and a crabmeat cocktail. What set it apart from others was this: Frozen Gazpacho for on top of oysters. Oh why don't they do more with that little pot of yumminess? I'd eat it straight, on crab, on salad, on everything. That reminds me, the house salads tend to be nice too. Not a big fan of the papas bravas but then again not a fan of potatoes in general. Go try it; you might like it.
  4. Wow that was fast. It's partly my fault. I didn't return after that first visit. I just wasn't that into my first experience. SER, on the other hand, brings me back. Same is true for those neighbors mentioned in the above post. I think it might be more than parking.
  5. I had a Rosemary plant try to eat my house. I had to take her out completely. I kept cutting it back and it kept just getting...more dangerous looking.
  6. Italian store was handing out free pizza, coffee, and wine samples on Saturday. My neighbors were all very impressed and even pre-ordered some of the wines on offer. They were not selling anything as I understand it.
  7. Congrats Don: "How Some Yelpers Are Holding Restaurant Hostage" by Holley Simmons on washingtonpost.com Here's the actual quote (at the very end): Yelp isn't the only way to go. Alternative review sites include TripAdvisor, Foursquare and donrockwell.com, a local restaurant forum that has a 10-year archive of community-provided reviews. I saw it in today's Express if you want a physical copy.
  8. you guys are funny. I"m over it already. I'd go back and be fine with him as a server although he wasn't perfect, his comment didn't impact the tip. He was nice and overworked that day. And yes, although not pretty, that stew might turn one to veggies.
  9. Look at that snap up there. I am blanking on the name but there's a downtown (nearish to Chinatown) place that used to have mirror-image bathrooms but while you were washing your hands, you'd realize that you were facing the men's room...not a mirror. Maybe it's similar.
  10. I almost logged onto to Chowhound but was put off by creating yet another username/password. Thank you for all the work you do for this community.
  11. Water & Wall didn't blow me away last night. Granted, I wasn't in a very good mood as I had a bad day at work, but still, I expected more based on reviews here. I should say that the service was lovely and perfect. Thinking back on what we had, whole fish, some pork, a salad, it was all fine but I'm not even motivated to be more specific. Feel free to delete this random post if it's not helpful. Oh, here's something helpful. On a beautiful Friday night, it was full but not packed. There was no wait and seating available at the bar and in the dining room. It was also easy to have a conversation/not too noisy. And the bathrooms are nice.
  12. The bathroom at water & wall was quite lovely. The sink and toilet are both a very nice grey that is quite soothing. Do you ever think about a bathroom when you consider reviewing? I do all the time but never put those thoughts in my review. If you do have thoughts about bathrooms and yet haven't discussed them, why not do it here? For example, I loved the bathroom at PS7s but OMG, I fell all the time when leaving it. I also hate when a bathroom is cold during winter or hot during summer while the rest of the place is temperature controlled.
  13. I just posted my review of SER and this minor point will not influence my decision to return but thought I'd open it up for discussion. Our server, when I asked about the veggie stew he told me that it was vegan. He then asked if I was vegan and before I answered said "if you are not, you should be." Isn't that odd? I gotta admit that it turned me off and 24 hours later, I'm still thinking about that. I mentioned it to neighbors and in-laws. It was that off putting. Would you be put off?
  14. If SER ever lives up to Taberna Alabardero, I will bankrupt myself by dinning there. I finally made it to SER. Lunch Friday was a beautiful and leisurely walk from my home and, as I predicted, I didn't have to cross a major road. I crossed two, both residential. I saw the Blue Goose on its last stand which was really interesting to see. I was in a blissful mood upon arrival. We ordered a liter of white sangria to start, it was light and tasty for $32. It was on the lighter side of sangrias and well balanced with no one ingredient overpowering the others. Would order again. My husband ordered the Serranito sandwich $9 was good, but not amazing except the bread was perfectly well toasted and this will become important in a minute. Market Salad $9: We split and it was big enough for two small servings. This was when I first became impressed. The salad was perfectly and lightly dressed which allowed the citrus and arugula to speak for themselves. Gambas al ajillo (Shrimp starter $11): Great and I could make this at home because it was pretty simple, obvious, and one of the proprietors told us how it was prepared. The garlic slivers are oil fried separately from the EVOO of the dish as to not overpower. Wonderful. The EVOO was amazing and yet, this starter did not come with bread. None. At first we tore the butt off my husband's bread and then we asked for some. We were given cold bread. This did not accompany the oil well at all so we continued to use toasted sandwich bread until that was no longer and option. We sopped up every last drop of that oil. SER: If you are reading, please serve some toasted bread with that starter automatically. Menestra $8, warm veggie stew side item: I loved this dish. Much of the squash and eggplant had been simmered down to quite a nice sauce and I think some of the other veggies were added later which allowed them to maintain their individuality, much to the dish's benefit. Our server informed us that every one of SER's veggies dishes can be prepared as vegan options, which is nice to know if you are oriented in that direction. Service: Service was great. Everybody was lovely. We felt welcomed and appreciated and look forward to my next visit.
  15. White Sangria was very good. It did not taste like alcohol yet did have a little impact. FF; To compare water & wall to SER, we'd do SER again. The food was better and the restaurant fit the space. Not so true, IMO, of W&W. The food was good, but not as good. The space seemed forced at W&W but I did like the grey toilet and sink.
  16. SER Was good and we will go again. Wine was good, will review food later. But I just need a place to vent right now. So on the walk home, I checked my work email and had a call request from someone "important". I knew it was going to be very bad news. And yes, what little buzz I got from the white sangria, was immediatly gone. So since then I've been troubleshooting. Hope my efforts work. I was really looking forward to doing my (easy) writing assignment but instead I"m working my ass off. Good thing I had some EVOO with my shimp. I need brain fat. Oh wait, is that salmon? doensn't matter. Thanks for listening.
  17. Thank you! Water and Wall for dinner (got reservation) and SER for lunch. It is amazing outside and both Mr. Caine and I are working from home. We'll see how productive we are after Spanish wine. I only have a speech to prep so it might actually be helpful to have a slight buzz.
  18. I forgot to make reservations for tonight .While I have 'free' babysitting, It is between 6:30 and 9 at lee and george mason. where can I have a great dinner and still get back to that location by 9pm? Probably without reservations. I wanted to try SER and Kapanos Taverna but alas, no reservations. Dare I try the bar or is that a disaster waiting to happen?
  19. Just passed by and there's a big sign out front declairing new management. Wow. Less than one year with founding managment? Crazy.
  20. I had one of the best dinners of my life at August last week. Two dishes were particularly outstanding. Their version of crawfish etouffee was simply amazing. It is made with a bit of beef stock and the crawfish are in dumplings. The broth (because it was far more like a soup than not) was smooth and satisfying. The dumplings perfectly well cooked and the crawfish, not at all chewy. Another outstanding plate was the fish stew but I don't see it on the menu. I did a tasting menu and trusted the kitchen to deal with my milk protein allergy. They did well. To be clear, everything was fantastic but these two dishes, I dream about.
  21. I think I forgot to mention that I"m going home at the end of the month. I rented a house in mid-city and will cross the lake a time or two over the week. I"m looking forward to it but for those who leave the area, returning is always bittersweet. I am looking forward to the food though, and not paying 10$/# for crawfish. I love this thrread. It's like a warm-up. My family says "who dat" all the time. "who dat at the doah?" for example. "who dat's car outside?" (i answer) It's my rental.
  22. Hum...wonder if the MarStorm is going to push that. If not, I might have to brave the elements...but what to do with Thing 1 and Thing 2? Off topic but who's over winter>? Me.
  23. Shrimp sauce piquant. OMG it is amazing. home-made shrimp and crab stock is probably the key
  24. This tread sent me to New Orleans Cajun Seafood. I had crawfish and hushpuppies. I"ll be back for more boiled seafood. The owner (male) was so friendly I just have to return. Their facebook page shows the journey of the crawfish that I ate today. Fun! Don's review here: http://reviews.dcdining.com/2013/04/20/new-orleans-cajun-seafood-seven-corners-va/ FWIW: 1lb boiled crawfish is 10.95. I remember all you can eat at UNO for free. 1 pound is BS. I need at least 5. Ah the sucbauf (pronunced suckoff). How I miss you. (stands for students unwinding on crawfish beer and unprecedented fun. letter B not pronounced. This is what it looks like:
