  1. It is new year's eve and I am reflecting on my year. I regret to admit that the quote Don's quoting, was mine. It does not matter from where this phrase originated. What matters is that I posted a phrase that normalizes the molestation of a person and judges harshly her attributes. Why is a cold body part necessarily bad? Why should anybody grab anybody's anything? Why call a body part something many find offensive? I feel very bad about this. I will not, in 2017, grab anyone, witch or not, against his or her will. I will accept all people, hot, warm, cold, and those in between, as valuable. Also, since I am confessing, my 3 year old just called me a "ditch" because I am "computering". So I'll stop now. Happy New Year.
  2. I too had the KBBQ over the weekend! I think the tag line for this place needs to change. Big buns is now a decade old and has an evolving menu of wonderful delights. And the wine comes in an actual glass.
  3. Don: It's alive and well. I think regulars are called "boss". Two "bosses" came in while we were and three other non-"boss"es. I"m now on a keyboard so can be a bit more specific. We were greeted and walked through the menu while sipping a sample of the chicken and bean soup, which is what I opted to eat for lunch. My husband ordered goat curry with a side of cabbage and rice & beans. It was so wonderful that I ate a full forth and that's when I wished that I had ordered something to take home. The only downside is that meal prep took a solid 15-20 minutes, time we didn't really have so we took the rest home. Each menu item can be altered. for example, if you want fish in your goat curry, that can be accommodated. Oh, and the beef pastry thingy was wonderful. I wish I had take a 4-pack home. Finally, the home-made smoothie wasn't over-sweet which appeals to me. If I lived there, or anywhere near, I would be a regular; it was that good and the menu that interesting. I live in Arlington so I won't make a trip but it's on my IKEA jaunt list for sure.
  4. Quick report. Monday. Salty seafood stew. Ok. I would have favored soupergirl in all of her vegan ness.
  5. Just a quick review. I just realized that I have only been back once in this entire year. I took a 3-yr-old on a date to Gaijin a week ago. We started with edamame that was perfectly well prepared and had big yummy salt crystals on it. My date ate most of them. My date had the kids chicken ramen and I strongly recommend this to anyone who likes chicken broth or chicken. Shredded chicken was added to the ramen and it was tasty alone or in combination with the broth and noodles. My date actually fished around in her bowl for the chicken with her fingers until I showed her that we did, indeed, have a fork. I had double miso ramen and it was very good. I added corn and bamboo shoots but I wished that I would have also added the egg. I think that would have given the dish a little more depth. This second visit was far more satisfying than the first. Service was much better too. It's fall; go get your soup on. ( I mean, drink some; not spill it on yourself. )
  6. The Michelin people have ruined Sushi Taro for lunch. Need reservations unless you are alone and willing to sit at the bar. But here's the catch, open table is sometimes off line and they don't answer their phone! I"m sad and depressed. How long do you think the Michelin magic will impact this place?
  7. Re: Sushi Taro; at this point I'm a lunch regular and while I am no expert at Japanese food, I adore my lunches there. First, the atmosphere is conducive to deep though. Second, it's cheap with a daily special for 12.95. Third, it's good! I usually get the daily special because I"m trying to expand my pallet and they are all good to great. Finally, the sushi is next level good compared to all the other I've experienced outside of San Francisco. While I am enjoying this thread, I'd suggest y'all take off your gloves and have a little fun.
  8. I really liked Yayla this weekend. I'm not an expert on Turkish food by a long shot but their spreads were very good and my kids loved the cheese flatbread and olives. The menu is interesting and i"d try it again. I feel compelled to tell you that the very small book store across the street has wine, beer, books and chocolate. A must visit.
  9. Not going to reveal how exactly I know this but everything has currency in prison. FWIW, things with "spicy" on the label are also valuable as are little mayo, mustard, hot sauce packs. Send a deodorant with tape on the top: tape has value. Stamps? Like sending cash. Shoppers food warehouse is the best supply shop for little serving sizes of things in case you ever need to know that. Edited to read: I have not ever even been arrested much left served time.
  10. https://www.zagat.com/30under30/2016/new-orleans# Makes me want to go home and eat.
  11. Wanted to give a little promo for lunch at Sushi Taro. I had a particularly stressful day at work and by 11:30, I was ready for a sedate lunch and figured that I could hide from staff here. I was right. At 11:30ish few diners were in the restaurant and it's a relaxing atmosphere. Because I am not an expert at Japanese food, I decided to have the lunch special which, for 12.95, was generous. Lunch started with miso soup, two mini-appetizers; potato salad and greens. All were very good and I wished for more greens. I had parts of salmon that I had never eaten before but because I am very familiar with crab anatomy, I knew right where to find the meat. It was perfectly well cooked, fatty enough that i could feel my memory getting better and served with a side of mild ginger. That was served with a full bowl of perfect udon noodle soup. I could not finish the noodles but did finish the broth. Yum. I will be back, by myself; not sure i'll share with another though...so relaxing.
  12. I have been carefully considering my review but am feeling far too lazy to put much work into it. Convivial underwhelmed at every turn even though I used this thread as ordering guide. The entire time I was dining, I kept thinking "Chaplin's around the corner was so much cheaper and far more interesting in concept..." also "Why are we not at Corduroy?" (because I Didn't make the reservation). The deep- fried duck thing is good because it is deep fried. The coq au vin is like described up-thread; General Tao's chicken. I did have a fish and beet dish that were very good, very very good but the online menu is not pulling them up. I'm tempted to delete this poor excuse for a post...
  13. Business lunch; four people, I only know one of them, but haven't seen her in awhile. Ideas?
  14. Beer Dinner last night was very fun. Set up: 10 3oz beer pours, 5 courses, 30 people upstairs. Chef Adam makes menu, Lyon Hall (LH) beer guy picks pairing and so does a vendor. In last night's case it was Great Lakes from OH. Pros: Food was great and the 5 courses were generous. Two favorites were the pike and flat iron steak. Both amazing. I'd go back to LH to have chef Adam's flat iron steak again. While I am not a "beer person", I appreciate the variations on flavor offered. It's a competition! I love tasting menus but I guess I'm a sucker for competition b/c I liked tasting two (in the case of last night) very different beers with each course. CONS: It is COLD as a witch's !@# up there so if you tend towards cold, bring a fleece, scarf, socks, ear muffs, gloves with the fingers free. Food was luke-warm by the time it got up the stairs Pacing was slow. Dinner time is supposed to be 6:30; started closer to 7, got home after 10:30, am tired today (yet not hung over). In all a fun night and IMO, worth the $65/person. Allergens were compensated for and there is an elevator for those mobility challenged.
  15. As pointed out in the Green Turtle thread, Applebees has replaced that nightmare in Ballston. My neighbors are quite displeased which puzzles me. Let's examine the location: Across the street from one hotel, walking distance to thousands of hotel rooms. What a great place for a fast bite of familiar food at a low cost. Furthermore, it's got a full bar (I assume) and friendly staff (again, assuming). Of course I'd rather pho, or any mom-and-pop shop but I don't hate the change. Furthermore, there's a Cheesetique right across a parking garage drive! When the flip out the mall, we will have more of these, I am sure, and will likely change my tune but for now, I welcome applebees and realize that I"m putting my DR membership at risk. In other news, how do we feel about the new decor of Grand Cru? I feel like i'm in Epcot; just me?
  16. Don: They are not discussing Trump being sued by Andres, that's for sure. Shall we discuss Ballston Applebees? If yes, where would that go exactly? I'm livin la vida loca in Ballston after all. (with regard to the off-topic conversation; many, many, many of my people have a GED or less and yet the are as smart as I am and I have a doctorate; furthermore the start and maintain tiny businesses that are the foundation of our country. Finally, when the citizens of New Orleans left because it was a mold covered mess; many rebuilt it even though they were here illegally, living in tent cities, being paid very little cash.)
  17. The deposition lasted two hours if cops & protester presence was any indication of length. There were 3 groups of protesters: those protesting Trump on racism; those protesting trump on Trump U fraud; and those protesting Trump's response to Orlando. Let's just sit with that for a bit. (thanks for moving the original post Don; I couldn't think of where to put it; of course I forgot about the search function)
  18. Pillsbury building is being protested by HRC and protected by way too many of DC's finest. "Trump Arrives in Washington for Deposition in $10 Million Lawsuit Against Chef" by Keith L. Alexander and Jonathan O'Connell on washingtonpost.com
  19. Gotta brag a bit. My cousin-by-marriage" is Cam. John Besh's team to lead all eateries in new Nashville hotel. How they are going to "locally source" enough seafood for a seafood-boil concept is beyond me. http://www.tennessean.com/story/life/food/2016/06/03/john-besh-names-chefs-new-gulch-hotel/85344062/
  20. Not an MD but I went to doctoral school in CT. I was complaining about the bland food in the entire state when some grad students started bringing me to various restaurants to try new foods. It changed my life. I am probably going to get shunned for this but I didn't eat anything but Creole/Cajun and my mom's food until I was 23. There was one Chinese food restaurant and one Uncle Julio's type place in the city but think mall, not regional.
