  1. I had the most bland bowl of pho at Pho75 I just had to ask, was it a 10am fluke or has the place gone downhill? Bland, really bland. Watery even. Roslyn was the location of my phirst pho. We took the kids because they love Pho, the place opened early and we though the 5 year old would like to visit a mom-dad date place. Kids loved it. In fact, 2-yr old said "I love it" and 5-yr-old said "This is really good pho". They were both wrong.
  2. I finished my ramen today! Why am I telling you? I think Oki is under new management and they cut the serving size and (In my opinion) service quality. This is the third time in a row I've been less than impressed with lunch. I wanted to make sure it was a true trend before complaining. The ramen was, however, as good as ever. I wish I could order extra broth. I asked today and was told flat out "no." I'd pay a bit for that pleasure.
  3. Just want to share that this is my go-to place for Pho-ing two little kids at once. Staff is very patient and it's never overly crowded. Rice Paper is better but so crowded! My husband and I always get at least one dish that is unfamiliar to us with sometimes success and sometimes not. Yesterday was a fail (broken rice) but the time before I had some special seafood soup that was fabulous.
  4. After a nice lunch, I stopped by with my two kids for something sweet. My husband and I got two different drinks and asked for extra cups because our kids have colds, we didn't want to share. They charge 50cents more a cup. That, combined with the fact that they do not take credit cards (a personal pet peeve) made me decide to never darken their doorway again. I know cups cost money and I don't mind paying for a cup but not price-gouging.
  5. That is a very insightful question. For the most part the soup froze well with two exceptions. Potatoes ended up being a bit watery at reheating and the lobster chewy. However, it didn't matter because overall the portion was generous and the taste divine. The only soup on the menu that day was squash soup and I was trying to convince them to whip me up a little dairy-free squash soup. They couldn't accommodate that, but this soup was amazing.
  6. A few weeks ago, I dinned at NoPa for lunch and am now eating the leftovers. The weekend before this lunch, I had a severe food allergy reaction that landed me in the ER. Unpleasant. I called the restaurant at 11:30 for a 12:30 lunch asking for advice avoiding my food allergy and to help me order "squishy" good as I still having trouble eating. The chef made the most wonderful seafood soup that I have ever tasted, or quite nearly, and I just had it again. Potatoes and quinoa served as the carbs and the base was likely a seafood stock or maybe fish stock. It was flavorful and delicate with huge chunks of lobster and shrimp. Crab meat added to the flavor as did the diced onion, herbs and sweet red pepper. Now NoPa has spoiled me and my food-allergy-ordering-self. If it was on the menu, I'd order it again.
  7. RW: Yes, that picture was of a flounder flower like the one I had. It's been quite awhile but maybe what I describe as "fatty" is ...creamy? or smooth? I am not very sushi sophisticated. I must admit though that I liked using "flounder flower" in my post. One rarely gets to use that phrase.
  8. While I dined at Kapnos Taverna in Ballston on Friday night, I"ve been carefully considering how to write this review. You see, I have adult onset food allergies (diagnosed less than two short years ago). Last month I had a rather irritating ER visit because of them and so now and more committed than ever to not eating dairy and nuts. I know what you are thinking: "why go Greek?" Curiosity mostly and supporting my neighborhood's emerging dinning scene as well. Since that ER visit, I've been to lunch at a few fine dining establishments in DC and each time was met with gracious hospitality (Woodward Table and NoPa, most notably). When I ask for options, i usually say that I'll eat anything, would like fish/seafood, and am not otherwise picky. I also call in advance, usually. KT was not all accommodating. I could choose from maybe 6 items. I love shrimp and was a little amazed that they could not alter the shrimp dish. That made me wonder if they even had a make-table in the back with single ingredient it in. As nice as the waiter was, he could not convince the kitchen to alter anything leaving me with 6 options. --pork on potato salad was very good --the raw-bar scallops were memorable b/c there was a canned jalapeno on top of it which overpowered the rest. --the salmon dish was the best ---the others were not memorable. In fairness, I didn't have a magical dining experience as I was made to feel like I was a pain in their ass and they would rather not bother. That's fine. I will take my business back to Spain.
  9. My husband has asked on a date to Lighthouse this coming Friday. Thank you for this helpful guide. I"m looking forward to yet another wonderful Korean dining experience.
  10. I love a logical explanation and will have ramen for lunch today. Maybe that will cure my crankiness. There's this little Asian fusion place near my office that I got to weekly. I usually go early and one day I went a little late to order my usual sushi platter. "We are out of all sushi" the owner said with concern on her face. I ordered something small and said that I'd be back. "Wait" and ran to the back. She came back with some of her mom's home- made veggie-chi (not cabbage, not kale) as a free side. How sweet was that!
  11. If the owners ever read this thread, I'd like to offer my thoughts. I have attempted to indulge my ramen desires in Arlington 4 times now. Every time I want to go, Gaijin is closed. Gaijin is closed on Sat and Sun for lunch. Why? Ramen, hell all noodle soup, is perfect hangover food. Not that I know. Closed for lunch. Why? Lee HWY has so much flow at that location that I"m sure you'd hook some fish. Closed on Monday. Ok, I'll give you this one IF you were working a full service but since you aren't, I"m not. Went early to preschool pick up just to order take out. No, I could not have ramen last night. This is where I would have written my review but instead, this is what you get. If ever I can dine with you Tu-Sun 4-10, I'll give it a try but on the 4 occasions I've attempted, I"ve not been able. FIX IT! Rant over. Thank you, fine DR readers, for indulging me.
  12. I wanted to agree with someone who, up-thread, said that service had gone down hill. Last night, my neighbors (who all live less than a mile from Willow) had a little gathering and we were all talking about that. The bar service, drinks and food are all excellent but all of us had stopped going to dinner there because the service was so slow. That said, my first Easter dinner with my one year old son and husband was there. We just walked up, got a table on the patio, and proceeded to have a wonderful time with great food and service outside on an amazing Sunday afternoon.
  13. Agree with Rice Paper and I also like Eden Kitchen which is larger than Rice Paper, has an extensive menu and I"ve dinned there so many times that I can promise you that it's sanitary, if my stomach can be the judge.
  14. Been twice in the past year. No parrot. I do work nearby. Maybe I will sneak in for a taste test soon. Fwiw, there is a farm stand outside the cafe on Tuesdays until October. It's not that great but something.
  15. In other news, the hours are not posted on the door. I went for lunch on Friday and alas, they were not open until 4pm. And only taking cash. My first time will have to wait awhile.
  16. I find ARLNow's comment section really really funny. Sometimes it turns up interesting information. Since I am a regular at OKI Ramen downtown, I just might have to check out our local option. Has anyone been? "Family-Friendly Ramen Shop Opens in Cherrydale" by Heather Mongilio on arlnow.com
  17. Wow. A jambalaya thread. How did I miss it? I like peas in my jambalaya. Anybody else? Frozen, green, peas. In it. Yum. (Just like my momma made).
  18. Oh So Clever you are Don. But you didn't answer the question: What are the benchmarks? I am over venwormyness and need to change my status even if that means telling a tread my every, single, dining experience, daily; and details on how my garden grows.
  19. Wait a minute. I thought for sure I had a little "I've reached the boiling point" over my name last time I posted but now I"m a vent worm again. Can I be a crab. A shrimp? A rocklobster? Brrrring? anything but a ventworm?
  20. "I've reached the boiling point". I love this tag line. How do we know what the levels of fishiness mean? How many posts does one need to make to reach the next level. I hated being a ventworm.
  21. Husband got fake-BGE for Father's day (his request). http://www.amazon.com/Char-Griller-16620-Kamado-Charcoal-Barbecue/dp/B00GJEPTJS We love it. When I purchased it, it was $50 less than the listed price but I guess Amazon has to pay for PrimeDay somehow. Anyway, I love home-smoked salmon. Our neighbor has a real BGE and this Akorn makes equally great "fish-meat" as my son calls smoked salmon. Husband has mastered chicken legs too; done them a few different ways but not red-meat. Neighbor does a great flank steak so I think we should try that next. It is heavy. Really heavy. The box sat on our porch for about 3 days before a team moved it into the garage (okay 2 people; but still).
  22. LOVED lunch today. I'm going to miss it. It's quite, good, and missing a sign out front to let you know you've arrived. Maybe they should try signage before closing down for lunch but what do I know? Their lovely lunch hostess is looking for a DC-based, preferably day job.
