  1. I'm gonna have to come to Rockland's (res)cue. I have only been to the one in Glover Park, but the sliced brisket sandwich with a grilled scallion, Rockland's BBQ sauce, and a little extra heat has consistently - over the course of many many years - been absolutely delicious. Their baby back ribs and baked beans are also more than passable. I am thrilled to have the DC Rocklands on that convenient little strip of Wisconsin for an occasional lunch or late dinner take out, and that delicious whiff of smoking meats when I'm stopping into Pearsons. Think I'm gonna head over now.
  2. For many years my favorite fried calamari (as well as fried scallops) in DC has been at Teatro Goldoni. Not sure if it has changed now that Fabrizio has left for Florida. I also used to enjoy a ver different fried calamari at Yanyu. I guess I'm living in the past with this post.
  3. I personally love those frites - IMHO some of the best in town, if not THE best P.S. In the interest of full disclosure I am an investor in Central.
  4. For those that are unaware, the world lost one of the greatest winemakers of our generation today. Alois Kracher passed away at the youthful age of 48. I plan to open one of his great TBAs tonite in his honor.
  5. I think Rocks will be all over these !
  6. I would go to L'Atelier Joel Robuchon in the MGM. It ain't cheap but it is a lot cheaper than the Mansion next door and is casual. Though I have not eaten there since last October, it was the best meal I had in 2006 (and during that trip West I ate at the Mansion, Guy Savoy, and Alex in Vegas, Mina in SF, and Cyrus in Healdsburg) and was better IMO than the L'Ateliers in NYC and Paris, both of which I like and have eaten in several times.
  7. We got a bit silly at a dinner party Saturday night. Started with magnums of 2002 Aubert Ritchie and 2002 Peter Michael La Carriere - both drinking perfectly. A slight preference for the Aubert, but they are both great wines. Then we shared a magnum of 1998 Beaucastel - always great but I don't see how it can improve any further, and then a magnum of 2002 Saxum Bone Rock - a wow wine that tasted like essence of blackberries. At this point we were still thirsty (there were 9 drinkers) so 4 more bottles appeared from the cellar - a 1989 Cheval (as good a bottle as I have had), a 1990 Shafer Hillside (good but on the decline), a 2002 Martinelli Blue Slide Pinot (a Helen Turley masterpiece - not your daddy's pinot but a star for new world Syrah lovers like myself), and a 2002 Amon Ra to finish things off. Well not quite - we then started doing Tequilla shots - a face off between the Clase Azul ( not available in this market but what a great tequila - smooth as silk with a disarming sweet finish) and a 1942 Don Julio brought by one of my guests. Sunday morning (and afternoon) was not fun.
  8. To this point, I had an awesome bowl of Pasta Fagioli at Bebo for lunch Monday - among the very best I've ever had. I'd return just for that.
  9. These guys are in Colorado but are reliable and will ship it to you ($110 a liter): http://www.primovino.net Several other places in NY and California carry it and will ship if you consult winesearcher.com (which also includes spirits in it's database)
  10. Actually, I believe it's less than a quarter a bottle.
  11. Go to Cochon - 7 minute cab ride. A unique and wonderful restaurant.
  12. Along a similar vein, a client brought in a bottle of 1970 Latour on Saturday night. Receiving advance notice, I countered with a pristine bottle of 1970 BV Reserve. We also shared both with the managers and some eager staffers, none of whom were as old as either bottle. I've had better bottles of the 1970 Latour - IMO the BV blew it away. A perfect example of mature Cab.
  13. Yeah - $25 (actually $125 for our 5 bottles - but Vincent heartily approved of all of them)
  14. $25 a bottle on opening night. Vincent said he is only helping out for a few days. He is still at the Ritz in Tysons.
  15. And planning to try a bottle of the 2001 Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes tonite at the Westend's opening. Can't imagine it will be as good as the Sixtine.
  16. The 2003 Cuvee du Vatican Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Sixtine last night after the Bourdain gig OMG, was it singing.
  17. check it out: http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo...-headlines-food
  18. I'm with you Kitkat. He is a rock star and from my anecdotal experiences he is taking a hands on approach to the Westend. He was in town Tuesday (for at least the second time in the past week). Saw him after midnite at the bar at Hudson with all his cooks and spoke with him briefly - he was warm and genuine and very accessible. I have no problem with the menu and I'm confident it will evolve as the chef settles in. Give the guy a chance. One thing is for sure (as all you Top Chef groupies know) - there will never be a dish that combine chocolate and chicken livers on that menu.
  19. I had a really delicious bowl of French Onion Soup there last weekend..... Cool space and a nice addition to the neighborhood.
  20. It actually opened last nite and my daughter and I stopped in for dinner. She, a much tougher critic than I'll ever be, proclaimed it "terrific!" and repeated her evaluation this morning at breakfast. Highlights were an outstanding matzoh ball soup - probably the best I've had in a DC restaurant, a very juicy and well seasoned burger, and a perfectly cooked and tender veal chop. The renovation was very well done and there was great energy in the room. The space looks chic and cool, but not at all cold. My law office is a block away, and I would frequently have lunch and post work cocktails at David Gregory, so I'm personally thrilled that Hudson has opened. For alfresco dining fans like myself, they've added several hi end heat lamps to the lovely expansive patio that faces 21st St. I'm sure I'll be visiting regularly.
  21. Had some very yummy dishes in the lounge last night after the Spoon concert. Highlights were the General Tsao's chicken wings (they were so tasty I almost got a second order) and some delicious house made sausages with pretzels. They serve till 11 during the week and service was outstanding.
  22. That would be Chateau Musar I believe. And maybe you'll find it right here...... http://www.zaytinya.com/documents/Musarinvite.pdf
