  2. I prefer to use his screen name - Rod Conks
  3. Rocks - I count on you for clever naughty responses to posts such as this.......
  4. You have way too much free time on your hands jumbleboy......
  5. Just a few notes on my dining experiences in Maui and Kaui. In Maui we had an excellent sushi dominated dinner at the bustling Sansei in Kihei, a darn good (albeit pricey) dinner at Spago in the Four Seasons (where the menu is heavily Asian influenced - more like Chinois and the Source than L.A.'s Spago), and a mediocre dinner at the Lahaina Grill (reputed to be the best in town). The wine list at the Lahaina Grill, however, was very surprising, with the likes of Harlan, Araujo and Latour sprinkled in the mix. We also had "World Famous Pancakes" for breakfast at Tasty Crust in Wailuku - not sure about the World Famous, but they were good and this was a fun joint with old school, local flavor. In Kaui we found an oasis in Hanalei at Barrauda. Cool vibe, good wine list and an outstanding selection of small plates. This place would do very well in DC (and many other mainland cities) - it was packed every night and I highly recommend it to anyone who visits the island. We had a fabulous pineapple terriyaki burger with onion rings at Duane's Ono Burger in Anahole (thanks Don). For lunch we loved the ahi and crab rolls, poke salad and seaweed salad at the Hanalei Fish Company - these folks are into food - they sell Cowgirl Creamery cheese and Fra Mani salumi out of their rerigerator case. For breakfast we enjoyed the Wake Up Cafe in Hanalei for eggy stuff and loved the Kiluea Bakery for its fresh bagels, bialys, muffins, etc., - it reminded me of a mini version of the spectacular Downtown Bakery in Healdsburg. Oh yes - Lampert's ice cream on both island - delish!!
  6. Walked past yesterday - not yet open but it appears they are getting close
  7. Dinner Tuesday at Rasika - we shared 4 apps, 2 mains, 2 breads, and 3 side veggies - all were delicious!!
  8. My source - one whom I would bet on - says they have signed a lease for the Olsson's Books space on 7th.
  9. y go to spot in Chicago is Avec on Randolph - Paul Kahan's fab casual restaurant, or its fancier next door sibling Blackbird. Avec you can easily do for $150 - Blackbird also if you watch yourself on the vino. Avec does not take reservations but the tables turn quickly - and it is CASUAL - communal tables make up a large portion of the dining room.
  10. We are going to be showing the Oscars all evenings on all four screens over the bar. A group is using part of the restaurant for an Oscar party but we are open for business as usual.

  12. The 2005 Domaine le Sang des Cailloux Vacqueyras Cuvee Lopy (consumed with pork belly confit and roasted duck breast last night). Just an outstanding Southern Rhone blend from Kermit Lynch.
  13. I would check out the counter at L'Atelier in the MGM. On my last trip West the meal I had there was the best of the trip - one that included the Mansion and Guy Savoy in LV, Mina and Quince (my second fave) in SF, and Cyrus in Healdsburg. And it also was better than the excellent meals I've had at L'Atelier in Gotham and Paris. You have to be mentally prepared to deal with a $50 price tag for a small plate of lobster salad, but I thought it was worth every penny.
  14. 1970 Chateau Latour for V-Day dinner at the bar at Eve - a great compliment to the outstanding beef tartare/oxtail ravioli/duck confit and pork belly we scarfed down. I have experienced significant bottle variation with this behemoth but this bottle was perfect and just got better and better as dinner progressed.
  15. Will be visiting these islands for several days later this month and was wondering if anyone could share any recommendations - dives and haute cuisine are all welcome...
  16. First of all Don - I told you my reaction that night had nothing to do with you - it was the great Bordeaux you brought. Despite numerous requests on your part I have repeatedly told you that was strictly a one time thrill. Jamie - first let me apologize for your experience - we really work hard to make sure each guest is comfortable in every imaginable way. The way our bar and lounge get sometimes makes that goal a difficult if not impossible one. No doubt that the 3 2-tops behind the red sofa are tight - particularly the 2 that "butt" up against the columns, especially the one near the dining room banquets which is what I believe Don is referring to. It may have been an overambitious design but it was compounded by a mistake by our millworker which we did the best we could to ameliorate. Please see me or Seb next time and we will do our best to find you roomier accomodations. Or at least play chair monitor. My dining room seating was definitely a mistake - way too roomy and comfy - people seem to linger for hours in those booths, banquets, and chairs. I'll know for the next time - small, uncomfortable chairs and bright lighting means quick turn time and lots more covers.....
  17. Glad to hear that Mark - have always enjoyed my meals at David Meyers' flagship - Sona [Closed in May, 2010]. Comme í‡a got a terrific review from the LA Times a few weeks ago and there is a story on it in this month's Food Arts. Going to LA for 3 nights in late Feb. Have dinner reservations at Comme í‡a, Osteria Mozza (loved Pizzeria Mozza when I went last Feb), and Fraiche [Closed in Jun, 2012] (which was just awarded best new restaurant of 2007 from LA magazine). Strictly R&D of course. Will report back.
  18. We don't have them but Central does - though I wish they would just stir them together and not shake em up.
  19. I agree that Proof is not cheap - nor was it ever intended to be so. But if you are looking for great food and wine, a kitchen that uses the finest available ingredients, and an elegant setting, Proof is a budget minded alternative to DC's elite dining spots. And though you kindly singled us out, I'm quite sure we are no pricier than a couple of the other restaurants mentioned in the article. Finally, Charles - for you a special deal - 35% off all Harlan this month. When can I expect you?
  20. Focusing on that "fun, upbeat, atmosphere" for a 15 girl bachelorette party I'd endorse Hudson and Firefly as well, but would also add Bistrot Du Coin, Sette and the West End Bistro to the mix.
  21. I know I do. I'm guessing your version was one of the last cuts in the brilliant 2005 film http://www.thearistocrats.com/
  22. "Jose Made In Spain" will debut Saturday, February 2 at 12:30 on WETA in Washington.
