  1. One of the great things about this site are the restaurants you discover through the "work" of others. Though I have passed Joe's maybe 500 times while living in Montgomery County I never noticed it nor set foot into it till yesterday. The Szechuan beef Noodle soup was everything I could ask for in a bowl of soup. That alone will keep me coming back. The Yu Shiang pork was sensational - not particularly hot but full of ginger and so flavorful. The Salty and Crispy Chicken were the chickennuggets of my dreams. The garlic spinach was perfection but my favorite was the Szechuan Spicy and Dry Beef Sautee - absurdly hot. Loved every morsel as I cleaned the plate but I and my tummy have been paying the price since. I love eating it but my body can't take it. Still, it was a sublime dining experience that will be oft repeated in the future.
  2. I assume many of you are familiar with the Dan Phillips of the Grateful Palate - importer of some of Australia's greatest wines and certifiable bacon freak. http://www.gratefulpalate.com/?p=Category_107
  3. You are entitled to your opinion but I think your charachterization is unfair - and this comes from someone who treats no cow as more sacred than the next. Mr. Landrum does not use this forum as a soapbox and I think it is perfectly reasonable for him to answer or refrain from answering any question - acceptable or otherwise - posed to him on this site. Just as it is perfectly reasonable for you or anyone else to ask them.
  4. 2005 Saxum Heartstone Vineyard - a GSM from the Central Coast but in a very French style. Structured and young with huge potential but still delicious today. 2002 Blankiet Paradise Hills Cabernet Sauvignon - a Helen Turley special, big, rich, fruit driven red from my favorite cabernet vintage of the decade. Drinking wonderfully now and a great future ahead.
  5. Price aside, do you think it rivals the corned beef sandwich at Central. I have my own view on this but I'm always interested in yours, even though you're a shegetz.
  6. Clase Azul Reposado Tequila - from what I can tell it is only available in the USA out of California and retailers are very reluctant to ship because of the ceramic bottle. The stuff rocks!
  7. Frankly, I'd kill for a few of those NJ mom n' pop Pizza joints here in DC.
  8. 1998 Usseglio Cuvee Mon Aieul CDP - YUM........
  9. Where you eating tonite bambi?
  10. Sebastian - how could you?
  11. If its like it is on G St., the head in parking is only allowed until 2PM - special dispensation for the church-going crowd. On several Sundays I've observed the police (no meter maids on Sunday in Penn Quarter) ticketing multiple head first parkers in the late afternoon and early evening. There is really no excuse for valet attendants tossing the tickets. They should bring them to the restaurant's attention and/or simply have the valet company's front office pay them promptly. As to Mr. Slater's point, our service has a large lot 2 blocks away, but often 4 or 5 cars will pull up at once. Even with 3 attendants there is sometimes no choice but to put one in an illegal spot for a couple of minutes. If there are proactive cops in the hood then tickets are a possibility.
  12. Sadly this happens all too frequently. Typically, the valet company will send payment immediately after they have the citation brought to them by the restaurant. But, at least in our case, if you pay it and bring us a receipt we will reimburse you and simply deduct it from our payment to the valet company at month's end.
  13. You are in luck - they are soft and fluffy. I prefer them hard and dense (like mom's), but I have no problem with soft and fluffy either. The broth was rich, flavorful and perfectly salted.
  14. Yummy Matzoh Ball Soup again tonite - perhaps enhanced by the Cowboys' defeat
  15. A Voce is awesome - and reasonable for the quality of the food. But it can be loud. Peasant in NOLITA is a really good spot as well.
  16. I had some for lunch on New Year's Eve. It was part of a remakable charcuterie (and cheese) selection at the Cheesemonger on Main Street in Great Barrington, MA. I polished off a 1/4 pound of it (at $90 a pound), and a 1/4 pound of Pio Tosini prosciutto (at $30 a pound). I loved the jamon - it had an element of that toro/kobe butteriness that I've never found in other jamon or prosciutto - but I would be hard pressed to say it was that much more enjoyable than the Pio Tosini.
  17. Ironbridge in Clarksville has that same concept with wine and on a slightly modified basis so does Evening Star/Planet Wine in Alexandria. I think it is a cool concept but unfortunately one which DC does not permit.
  18. Dean and Deluca carries Dartagnan's line and some other quality terrines and rillettes
  19. You are a wuss. I had that same pizza last night, added extra chili pepper, and it was delish. Nothing remotely painful and far from the hottest pizza I've eaten. Perhaps years of eating slices in NYC topped with loads of grated Parmigiano, chili flakes, and - sadly - garlic powder, have conditioned my palate.
  20. Awesome bottle of 05 Saxum Heartstone Vineyard last night (49% Syrah, 33% Grenache, 18% Mourvedre). Lots of fruit but still very Northern Rhone like. Yummy!!! (And no, its not on our list.)
  21. I stay at the Soniat House in late September and it was sublime.
