  1. I'm willing to try anything so long as it won't burn my place down...At the same time, I agree with Rovers as I somewhow doubt that the result (flavor) will be the same as grilling outdoors.
  2. Awesome line-up (especially theh hickory smoked corn!). I'm jealous! As an apartment dweller, I don't get to grill too often. Am motivated to pick up some corn for tonight anyway.
  3. I'm trying to eat a giant honeycrisp apple. Even a half is massive! It's really, really good.
  4. That is great news about Acacia's happy hour. Re the flatbreads, the one you had sounds terrible. Based on my own (one-time) experience w/ Acacia's flatbreads, there seems to be a big difference between the manchego and potato flatbread and the one w/ kalamata olives and tomatoes, the latter which seemed undercooked. Btw, I was pleasantly surprised by a delicious margherita flatbread pizza at Cosi the other day.
  5. I'll be honest. I've never been a fan of Delhi Dhaba, but at the same time I wouldn't like to see more empty storefronts and restaurants in the neighborhood. We already have the two vacant spaces that were formerly KFC/Taco Bell and Green Apples. Granted the situation is much worse in Cleveland Park down the street, but turnover of restaurants (at least as long as I've been in the neighborhood) has always been high in the Van Ness area. I'm rooting for the new kid on the block--Acacia Bistro--and would encourage neighbors or those on their way to or from Politics and Prose or errands to stop by for a glass of wine and light bite. P.S.@Tweaked, I'm having some succcess at Indian Ocean with some veggie dishes (my favorite is aloo palak - spinach w/ potatoes), so you might give it a try.
  6. Boca Raton; Boynton Beach I'm too late to help the Storage Lady out, but wanted to make a few recommendations for those heading south. Two of my favorites in the Delray Beach/Boca Raton/Boyton Beach area are: 1) Kee Grille (Boca Raton) and 2) Flakowitz Deli of Boynton Beach. Kee Grille's lambchops are to die for, and I'm constantly craving Flakowitz's corned beef, pastrami, and potato pancakes. It's probably the best New York-style deli I've ever been to. Personally, I don't think I could live in South Florida, but the food options are pretty damn good down there.
  7. Awesome report, Daniel! Thank you. Everything sounds delicious. One question: how's the bubble tea at A&J? What flavors (besides the honeydew) have you had?
  8. I'm pretty sure that I picked up some amazing (and huge!) honeycrisp apples from Quaker Valley last week at the Foggy Bottom Farmers Market. They're so-o-o delicious. Am now on the hunt for good pears.
  9. I'm a sucker for saag [though the potatoes w spinach were called aloo palok here, aloo saag elsewhere] and it got me in the mood for Indian flavors... *** Anna, me too! In fact, I'm addicted to the potato w/ spinach dish, which I've been getting lately from Indian Ocean near my place. They call the dish "aloo palak". I'm still a novice where Indian food is concerned and am trying to discover (and eat!) more veggie dishes.
  10. Just when you think you've seen it all! The U.K.'s Daily Telegraph reports that McDonald's will be opening in the Louvre next month. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/6259044/McDonalds-restaurants-to-open-at-the-Louvre.html# What I was surprised to learn is that after the U.S., France is McDonald's second largest market. Interesting.
  11. I just checked the board and am trying to understand why one of my posts has been moved to an unrelated category (moved from "sending food back in restaurants" to "food phobias")? I've PM'd one of the moderators, but don't know who deals with this. If you're one of the moderators and happen see this, please take a look. Thanks. P.S. Nothing exciting to report re: my plans. Just that 4-letter word that begins w/ "w".
  12. DaRiv18, thanks very much for the detailed description. The Sun and Sand sounds right up my alley. I'm definitely going to give it a try.
  13. Can one find Amarula anywhere around here? (NW DC preferred.) Honestly, I've never really looked because I always get it at duty-free, but I'd like to have some around for Christmas and wonder if I can get it locally or if I need to pick some up on my next trip... **** I remember trying Amarula for the first time at the Pegu Club in New York a few years ago. More recently, a Chowhound source reports that you can buy it locally at Calvert Woodley: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/64331 I'm in there pretty often, but haven't seen it (then again, I wasn't looking for it!). You may want to give C-W a call. Or maybe ask weinoo here on DR.com about NYC sources. Hope you find it!
  14. Does anyone have an HP netbook? Am considering a few HP models (not the one with the smallest screen) along with some Assus and Acer models too. Any feedback or advice would be appreciated!
  15. Pat, I too dislike having to send food or drinks back and would prefer not to do it. However, if the food hasn't been prepared as ordered (e.g., steak arrives bloody rare when I've ordered it medium-rare or well) or a cocktail tastes as if it has little or no alcohol, I will send it back. Not too long ago, I was having drinks and dinner at the Cheesecake Factory in Chevy Chase with a friend, and we both found our mixed drinks to be lacking in alcohol. So we sent the drinks back, and to our surprise the replacements were the same (actually, my friend's drink was even weaker!). The server, who was brand new on the job, said that the bartender used a standard pour and that we were welcome to order something else. Before we could decide, another (supposedly more experienced) server came over and told us that, "we probably wouldn't be happy with any of the mixed drinks we ordered." Great customer service. We decided to switch to wine and asked for the manager to come over just to make a point that we didn't like the way this was handled. The manager never appeared. I don't go to the CF often, but do have a few favorite dishes (Chicken madeira, Chinese chicken salad and really like the bacon-wrapped parmesan-stuffed dates on the small plates menu). Anyway, I don't hesitate to send back drinks in this type of situation, and most places usually make a better, stronger drink to please the customer--at least they try. As for meat, it varies by restaurant and location. Here in the U.S., I've had pretty good experiences at high-end restaurants.
  16. I'm curious about the drink you're talking about. I'm tempted to try it, but looking at some of the ingredients (e.g., vanilla) am wondering if I won't like it, especially if it's sickeningly sweet. What's it like, if you remember? Thanks.
  17. I'm not surprised that the Obamas chose the Blue Duck Tavern for their anniversary dinner. It's such a solid, consistently good restaurant that it's become my go-to place with out-of-town guests (my parents love it), clients, and friends. I especially like the steak and beef entrees served family style and the apple pie a la mode (house-made vanilla ice cream). My vegetarian friends have also been pleased with the veggie dishes. Yet for some reason, I've never been wowed Blue Duck's sides (the potato dishes are especially bland). Last but certainly not least, the wine list is very good. I've had some excellent California Pinot Noir. I've also heard great things about BDT'S weekend brunch and am looking forward to trying it soon.
  18. I am a goodeats appreciateur! Thanks for all the great work you've been doing on the calendar.
  19. Yes, I was wondering about what restaurants besides the Melting Pot have fondue. I don't think there are a lot. Anyway, it's really nice of you to offer. Thank you! I've been to Annecy too. C'est genial.
  20. Thanks, goodeats! I've actually been to all 3 places, but have only had the fondue at Cafe Mozart and that was a long time ago. Cafe Mozart is a quirky place. I used to work across the street and went pretty often. My favorite dishes at Cafe Mozart are the Hungarian beef goulash, potato leek soup, and apple strudel. And thanks for reminding me about Firefly. The cocktails and parmesan truffle fries are really good at Firefly, and I love the cool atmosphere. I may have to try the fondue there. As for Cafe LaRuche, I go from time to time, but mostly in summer and usually only for dessert. I'm not really fond of the savory dishes there. Thanks again, good eats!
  21. Besides the Melting Pot, are there any restaurants in DC or Maryland that have fondue (cheese and/or chocolate) on the menu? Thanks.
  22. Reading your post, I couldn't help thinking about recent reports about "cat poop coffee," which is apparently coffee beans that have passed through the digestive tracts of civets in South Asia. http://www.pawnation.com/2009/09/16/florida-coffee-shop-to-sell-cat-poop-coffee/# I really hope this isn't going to be a big trend...
  23. I didn't notice a jukebox, but before the remodelling, I recall hearing Arabic music in the background. I should mention that I wasn't around in the late 1960's. I've been going to Mama Ayesha's off and on for about the last 15 years.
