  1. For those wondering about the Baltimore scene, Catonsville Gourmet. My friend's family enjoys it greatly but I personally have never been there. "Catonsville Gourmet invites you to bring in your own alcoholic beverages, provided you are 21 years of age or older. These beverages may be consumed while you are eating."
  2. My friend's mom makes one for the fourth of July BBQ and it is a great dish. I don't think you'll be disappointed, but then again I've never been to either of those places.

Be careful though, they close by 8 or 9 most nights.

I know Dean posted his experiences from the business side, but do you guys usually use these types of deals at a place you go frequently because you can, to try out new things, or extend the budget and go nicer than you normally could? I find myself rotating through these strategies but I've definitely found some places that I'd like to add to the rotation. Plus I plan on moving in the next year and restaurant.com will help me find new places once I get into the city.

  6. Ok we are doing crabs and bbq (don't know what kind specifically) tomorrow and I'm in charge of an appetizer and am completely stumped. Was thinking a taco/7-layer type dip or maybe some guacamole but I don't know how the transition would go, any suggestions? I'm not the greatest cook in the world and only have a couple hours beforehand to throw everything together so keep that in mind if you think of anything.
  7. From what I can tell from this thread, first visit to the Ellicott City location in 9 months. Got two pizzas, a margherita and another with the spicy sauce and sausage as the topping. I really enjoyed the classic sauce on the margherita and the basil and such were great. The pizza wasn't super-charred or anything, but I still greatly enjoyed it. However it was my first trip and I wasn't being too adventurous with experimenting how they cooked it, toppings, etc. The spicy sauce was very interesting, could definitely tell it was a bit peppery but not quite up my alley even though I usually like spicier foods. The margherita was good enough that I'd definitely order it again, and the ring of fire pizza really seemed to catch my eye so hopefully I can explore with that one at a future date. I see what an earlier poster was saying about not going into detail about the wines, especially listing vintages, but tonight was 1/2 price wine night (a nice surprise) so we didn't really care too much. Also, on the menu it said they were opening a third location in Frederick in 2011.
  8. I know you probably feel like you're talking to yourself at times on here, but I just wanna say that I'd definitely be interested depending on availability and such. In the coming months I hope to move to the city but for now I can only watch most of the reviews from afar.
  9. Went there tonight and we ended up getting four different dishes and sampling each others, and the above was very good. The moros y cristianos might have been my favorite rice dish I've had in the area, but I'm not normally the biggest rice fan. I got the bistec palomilla and I thought it was done very well, a nice use of the spices and the onions added a little but more flavor. The two other dishes were a pork and a steak/beef option (I forget) and they were both good too, everyone had a different favorite. It's certainly hidden and I've never been to the other Cuban restaurants mentioned (may have to go to an authentic place when in Miami in November) but definitely worth it.
  10. I finally went for lunch...I'm a fairly big Canopy homer, which I consider very good (as well as the new joint Oakey's), but the pit beef that I got today was a step above. Medium-rare with horseradish and what they call tiger sauce, and as soon as I tasted the sample slice I knew I was in for a treat. It was as close to perfect pit beef as I've had and I'd say the best. Maybe its my mood today or maybe the condiments, I don't know, but damn it hit the spot. The fries were about normal for these pit beef places, the Canopy's were slightly better if I had to choose, but let's be real nobody goes to these places for the fries.

  12. Yes tickets will be tough to come by, its a novelty thing and there are a ton of people that would kill to go to that game
  13. Fwiw my friend and I ate at the one at Camden Yards back in April but as a disclaimer we've never been to the original. From what I remember, it was slightly pricy but still pretty good and one of the better food options at the stadium (related note- Boog's sandwiches seem real small, although can't speak for the club level spin-off). However, I'll still always favor the sausage stand right outside of the bars.
  14. I love living right by here...stopped by on Saturday and the medium-rare pit beef hit the spot, as usual. I always end up waffling between medium-rare and rare but I've always enjoyed my pit beef sandwich regardless. However, the fries I got were a bit overcooked on this particular trip, which was slightly disappointing. I quickly get over that as I downed my sandwich and birch beer though.

I was really craving some Pho so I stopped by on Saturday for lunch with a friend...I got your basic pho with all sorts of cuts while he got a typical beef entree...both were fantastic for the $7 or $8 bucks we spent. Some people seemed to complain on various website reviews that they had started skimming on the meat, but I didn't seem to have that problem. All the veggies were in good shape as well and the service was good enough for a place like that. We were a bit hungover and they noticed us downing water so they provided us with two glasses. Also split an order of summer rolls, which were perfect on the hot day with the shrimp and greens they used.
  16. I drive by there with the windows down 5 or 6 days a week...what a wonderful odor to wake up to. And yet somehow I haven't grabbed lunch here yet, which I've been meaning to do for months now.
  17. Everyone always used to go to DP Dough for their calzones, but I found the ones at Ratsie's to be wayyyyyyy better And nothing quite like their hot greasy pizza after the bars Still good while sober too
  18. They also have some sandwiches that sound great, however whenever I ended up there it was always a weekend morning where all I wanted was an egg sandwich.
  19. it's still good and owned by the same awesome guy always making sure you're cup is full and asking if you want a refill on the way out (one of my favorite things is that they have birch beer on tap)...almost every time I'm back in College Park I make an effort to go there. It's usually fairly steady but never too packed when I've gone.
  20. The spicy pork bellies are awesome here as well...I don't think I've ever gotten anything that I wouldn't recommend (unless you're easily grossed out) but my go-to's are those and the beef ribs. Bulgogi is also very good. I may have to try the spicy pork with octopus next.
  21. I've lived in Howard County for basically my entire life, I'm 23 and just starting to get into the whole cooking/food thing. I hope to bring some decent reviews of restaurants all along the Baltimore/Washington corridor (don't know much about NoVa) and hope to add to the Baltimore board specifically. Also looking to expand both my food and wine tastes as I didn't get brought up with this culture.
