  1. Popping open the Pumking as we speak.....the sweetness and spices are not nearly as overpowerfing as I remember, but they're still a bit more than I prefer. I'm enjoying it more than I seem to recall, but it's not my favorite or anything. My viewpoint seems to be more of the minority though, both here and other places. I just don't have a big taste for some of the stuff they highlight.
  2. Started off last night with a Heavy Seas The Great'er Pumpkin, a pumpkin beer aged in bourbon barrels. The bourbon taste you are probably familiar with from other bourbon-casked beers hits you up front, and then the pumpkin and the spices. It's one of my favorite pumpkin beers, but if you don't like bourbon beers you'll hate this one. And of course it's extremely strong (10% I think) After that I switched to Flying Dog The Fear. I don't think my palate was properly cleansed because at first all I got was....chocolate? So that's my fault. Very little spices in this one, which is a good thing to me - I don't like my beers to be too overpowered with the nutmeg, cinnamon, and/or ginger that some pumpkin beers sometimes get away with. But again its a darker, stronger pumpkin ale so it doesn't appeal to many.
  3. I care! Despite the fact that I said in my April 2012 post that I'll be back....I still haven't. And I don't know when I will get back, seeing as I live within blocks of Bluegrass Tavern and still haven't been there either. My dining habits have been pretty poorly conditioned lately, and that's no fault of my own. It's an easy place to cut out when you're budgeting to save money. I've found this to happen a decent amount with Woodberry - people cling too much on the hype and expect the greatest meal ever. I don't know who to blame for that (the psychology (sociology?) of overhyping could be a whole thread by itself), but it's a problem and you don't know if you'll have an experience like Don's first or his second. It's the nature of the joint. But for what you get, it's an excellent bang for your buck. Your post might be the perfect idea - Sunday brunch sounds like the perfect opportunity for me to make a return.
  4. I'll drink one Pumpking every year or two and enjoy it....but anything more than that and my tongue just explodes from an overexposure to the various sweetness and spices. It's a pumpkin pie beer - for a true pumpkin beer, pick up an Elysian - The Great Pumpkin, Blight Pumpkin Ale, Dark O' The Moon, or Night Owl depending on your tastes and the availability. Locally I'm a big fan of the Heavy Seas The Great Pumpkin and The Greater Pumpkin as well as the Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale. I haven't actually drank any pumpkin beers since this thread was started so I can't give an actual review.
  5. Free cheese pizza at Range w/ government ID....unless you're a member of Congress. Other Baltimore area specials (as far reaching as Annapolis, Frederick, and Columbia....plus Nando's!) can be found here
  6. Speaking of... I updated the Baltimore one last week, but it should probably be moved into the topic on the Baltimore Dining Guide Index and not just floating around. http://www.donrockwell.com/index.php?/topic/20939-baltimore-city-dining-guide/
  7. I swung by last night....they really do have a very nice crust. We had a margherita pizza with some prosciutto added and then the Salsiccia [Housemade Mozzarella and Sausage/Sopressata/Wood-Roasted Red Peppers] and I liked the margherita better - the freshness of the ingredients shone through while the other one had a bit more body and probably wasn't a good choice when I was looking for something lighter, so thats my fault. For happy hour they gave two 12 oz pours of select beers for $5 but I went with the cocktail option instead and received a nicely presented daquiri when I went with the bartenders choice. I'll definitely be going again soon, very delicious meal without breaking the bank.
  8. That's good news for Don, right?
  9. I was reading this article/review in Baltimore Magazine about Our House in Locust Point and the following paragraph describing their drink ordering method caught me by surprise: They don't seem to have much of a social media presence at all or a website that I could find, just some mentions on your typical food sites. Really seems like they're trying to survive on word of mouth, so I'm gonna try and spread the word. It will be added to my long list of places to try.
  10. I'm cruising through old threads and came across Chameleon Cafe....seems like they changed names as well as got new management, so it sounds like the new place gets a new thread. So here it is. There are a couple other posts discussing this in the end of the Chameleon Cafe thread, I don't know if anybody wants to double-check my instincts here and maybe transfer them over. website
  11. There's Thai Arroy in Federal Hill (no idea if a thread exists*)....the one time I went I enjoyed my lunch but probably didn't make the most out of it. That's partially because I was in the middle of a long day of moving and partially my own fault. I'll be going back soon for a better report. *if Don sees this, don't worry....one day I will get some time to update the dining guide. I haven't forgotten about it.
  12. What about gas station tacos in Gaithersburg? (Note: I've never been but heard good things)
  13. I'm a big fan of the original site that does the prints....but they're designed more as a pop art piece than informational. Sure it has some value, but its just supposed to be a fun, different way of organization. They aren't going to be seen as serious informational pieces with information that you would find in a detailed book about the subject but decorative conversation pieces. Thats clearer once you look at the full collection of their prints/shirts such as The Various Varieties of Fruits, The Various Varieties of Vegetables, Constitutions of Classic Cocktails, The Very, Very Many Varieties of Beer, Breweries of the United States, The Compendious Coffee Chart, The Cartography of Kitchenware, The Cocktail Chart of Film & Literature, and in non-food/alcohol related The Chart of Collegiate Sports Teams, A Meticulous Metric of Baseball Team Names, The 1980's: A Pie Chart, Up Up Down Down, Grand Taxonomy of Rap Names and Migratory Patterns of Fresh Princes. I have a few and I often get comments on them from friends.
  14. I went to the Ellicott City location on Wednesday and they had two extra flavors "on special" in addition to the soy garlic and hot - old bay and honey hot. I don't know if those will be regular additions for just that location, just a temporary experiment, the chain is starting to branch out, the Old Bay will be regional or what, but thought I'd share. They were both exactly what you would expect, the honey hot wasn't as spicy as the regular hot due to the presence of the honey and the Old Bay had your standard dry wing rub.
  15. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I did notice one day last week that your truck was parked on Crosby Rd near the intersection with Rolling Road and meant to bring it up but it slipped my mind. Will that be a temporary spot or are you managing the setback in different ways? I have signed the petition and will pass it on to others. Don, maybe you could get some sort of tweet or something out to the masses so this update is more widely seen?
  16. I had the new Korean tacos on Friday....not exactly your typical ballpark fare and not bad either. Not mind-blowing either, but something different. On the other end of the spectrum, the Triple Crown- a hot dog topped with pulled pork and bacon, served with sides of baked beans and coleslaw at the BBQ stand out in right field in fair territory by the Eutaw Street entrance.
  17. I splurged maybe six months ago and got a meatball at one point. They use a half-loaf of Italian bread, cut out a valley and throw in like six or eight meatballs with marinara sauce, optional cheese and bake it all together. Its not really a sub, and its freaking delicious and a ton of food. The Santino (imported prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil, fresh basil & tomato) is fantastic as well, the make-up of the sandwich lets the freshly-made mozzarella really take the spotlight.
  18. I got lazy and didn't go to the grocery store on Monday/Tuesday night so I swung by yesterday for lunch. Even though I work in the area and have been to that Wal-Mart at lunch while Ariana Kabob was open to run a quick errand, I would have had no idea that this food truck exists if this thread didn't get posted. I've often complained about the lack of quality food options within a quick drive from my work to my friends, but this is one more place that will cause me to complain less. (I still need to try this dumpling stand down the street, but that's a different story.) Like the OP, I got the lamb kabob platter. I was hungry as hell yesterday and this completely satisfied me. I devoured the salad, it was nice and crisp while the lamb and rice were well-seasoned. I was sad about the amount of lamb, not because it wasn't well portioned for $9 (it was, I'd very much recommend it to anybody in the area) but because I kept wanting to eat it- it was delicious. This will definitely be added to the rotation, a good discovery by the OP. I stuck with something more traditional but sometime I'll have to give the burger or something else a try just because. Once summer hits I'll definitely take advantage of calling ahead as standing in that parking lot can get hot I'd imagine.
  19. Taking a quick glance at their 10K from FY 2012, Cheesecake Factory had $1.8 billion in revenues for 165 restaurants (151 under the Cheesecake Factory brand itself, 14 other restaurants, maybe other stuff?) so yeah they pull in some serious cash. dean and I came to different figures but it gets the same general point across
  20. oooo I forgot...I went maybe two months ago and got a breakfast burrito, which appears to be the first time anybody has actually documented getting breakfast in this thread. The eggs were fluffy and it was filling, tasty and a great deal....do not be afraid to branch out from the normal tacos.
  21. I read this yesterday, an absolutely fascinating article on the science and business behind what goes on behind closed doors at companies like Pepsi, Frito-Lay, and Oscar Meyer. I'd recommend it to almost everybody on this board.
  22. This doesn't help the OP, but Obrycki's is only in BWI now- the original location closed maybe a year or so ago. There's also apparently one in the Cleveland airport if you ever find yourself craving a crab cake in Concourse D. Based on this thread started by deangold, LP Steamers could also have applied. Note: I have never been there, was just reading through the archives a couple weeks ago and it stuck out when I saw this thread.
  23. Coincidentally, a living social for brunch just popped up for Langermann's on Light (Federal Hill only, not Canton) http://www.livingsocial.com/cities/23-baltimore/deals/599576-20-to-spend-on-brunch
