  1. I only stopped in here solo last week for a quick bite, so my impressions are limited. The aforementioned brussel sprouts were as good as advertised (although they could have used a touch less sweetness in the sauce; the last couple of bites were cloying). The pulpo was perfectly servicable, but honestly nothing to write home about. I prefer a good amount of char which was lacking. The texture was otherwise right on. The best part about this place may be the happy hour deals: 1/2 off drinks until 7:30 on weekdays.
  2. "Predatory towing" is a completely loaded description. These are private property owners enforcing the rights to land that they pay for (or lease). It would be more aptly titled "higly efficient towing". These guys make a lot of money off of people who risk bending the rules or who aren't very observant of where they park. Granted, the allowable fees payable to get your car back are the real issue here. I have no problem making the argument that those are usurious and should be better regulated. This situation is exactly analogous to the DC speed camera arguments, but the simplest solution to both is the same: don't speed and don't assume that "free" parking spaces are yours for the taking.
  3. I'm very excited to try this place; it looks like what I had hoped Kushi would be (not to knock Kushi, we go there often, but it's a different vibe).
  4. A couple other notable DC additions: Cowgirl Creamery (919 F Street Northwest) (already on the Good Cheese list?) A. Litteri (517 Morse Street Northeast)
  5. They officially changed name to Field2City last year at some point (they offer a kind of a la carte CSA now under that name). They still have a web presence at Timor, though, so it's kind of confusing. I have no idea if this site is still functional or not. SW intersection of Rhode Island and 2nd NW; neighborhood is Bloomingdale/Ledroit Park
  6. Yeah, I know about Cannon's, but "driveable" and "Georgetown" don't mix in my book pretty much any time of day. I don't considerable Georgetown to be driveable from within Georgetown . Should have specified.. Maine Ave might actually be the best bet, but the NoMa Harris Teeter is most convenient to me. The KaloMorgan one slightly less so. I may start there in a widening concentric search. Thanks
  7. Is there a reliable source for live lobsters in central DC? Stick a map pin in, say, Logan Circle and limit to 10-15 minute (non-rush hour) drive. Do the Harris Teeters in Kalorama or NoMa have tanks? Georgetown Safeway?
  8. If Farragut Square yesterday is any indication, entirely unaffected or possibly increased. They had the longest queue by FAR at lunch time yesterday
  9. Finally going to knock this one off the list tomorrow (in the Bistro, not tasting room), any recent news/recommendations? In terms of number of selections available, how extensive in is the Fri/Sat 3-course menu compared to the regular a la carte posted online (which is still Autumn ... 2011, I presume )
  10. After some googling I think the German version I had was Vitamalz. The current label doesn't look familiar, but this was close to 30 years ago. Could have also been Karamalz. Either way, information is conflicting on whether these have no alcohol, or a very low 05.-1.0% content. I suppose that could have changed in the intervening decades.
  11. A couple decades ago on a family trip to Germany all of the kids in the family we stayed with were drinking some malted beverage that was essentially a malt "soda" (it is killing me that I can't remember the brand name right now!). My folks were against it at first since it did contain a very low level of alcohol (somewhere around 0.5-1% probably), but relented under constant whining. When in Koln ... I still remember gathering the empties to take back for bottle return in a wooden crate. It was pretty syrupy stuff, like a very chewy dunkel or dark marzen. Looking back, it's probably exactly what I would imagine a watered down, carbonated can of malt extract used for home brewing would taste like.
  12. Hmm, are they taking over Baja Fresh locations? Corporate siblings? There is a Baja Fresh on 19th just across from the closed Dupont Metro entrance.
  13. I'm guessing they don't want to bother with the liability. Their lot, their rules. I'm sure the towing company doesn't mind either, it's dead easy money for them. I'd be surprised if AutoZone wasn't even making money on *that* contract already!
  14. Joe, your first mistake was to believe that an ESPN broadcast of the Home Run DerbyTM had anything whatsoever to do with the game of baseball.
  15. Found 4-packs of Green Flash Brewing's "Le Freak" at the P St WF yesterday. It's a Belgian/Imperial IPA hybrid, and it always impresses the hell out of me. Nicely balanced. Usually I can only find bombers when it pops up randomly in DC. I may need to go back for more before it disappears again ...
  16. Ah, Hamburger Hamlet. I'm drawing a blank: where was the Georgetown location and what currently occupies the space? I only have fuzzy memories of it.
  17. You got lucky on the parking. Police presence has nothing to do with it; the private towing company patrol that is in charge of the lot must have not coincided with your visit.
  18. They are working to expand into the storefront next door. If the small kitchen is holding them back (doesn't sound likely), that may bring some relief. Sad to hear your report, we had heard very good things from friends when it first opened.
  19. The food is for another discussion, but the service at Old Ebbitt is day in and day out some of the best in town, at least at the bars. The Clyde's group usually gets high marks for service and training all around (and it seems rightfully so), but the staff at OEB is just consistently good, and good consistently. The other locations clearly aim for the same high marks, but miss occasionally (I'm looking at you, Clyde's of Gallery Place).
  20. People who think very highly of themselves will never be able to resist purchasing products that are (cunningly? cynically?) priced precisely to re-enforce the notion that they are justified in thinking very highly of themselves. I think the kids these days have a word for it: flossin'
  21. I think Bacio uses Still RIding GF pizza crusts. A lot of places actually use this company's product for their GF pies since it's basically a ready made option; just add toppings, no dedicated prep required and they take care of the "prepared in a GF environment" for you (of course, those pizzas are still just cooked in the same ovens ...). We thought Pete's used them, too, but I don't think that is the case (at least any more). The only place I'm fairly sure makes their own GF crusts in the area is Rustico, which is primarily chickpea flour based
  22. For years now I've assumed that "Maryland crab cakes" = "Maryland style" on almost all menus. I think we counted no less than 3 places in Chicago advertising Maryland crab cakes. It's getting harder to find real Maryland crabs these days, and often the staff won't even know unless they are in charge of ordering product. On a similar note, it pains me that I have to pester staff at places where I'm ordering steamed crabs. I don't want Carolina crabs. I certainly don't want Gulf crabs. I want Bay crabs. And, sadly, I'm sure I'm being flat out lied to on many occasions where the crabs are advertise as local. Hopefully things will turn around a bit this year.
  23. We ran into this food truck (a converted school bus) in LeDroit Park last night, parked next to the new playground adjacent to Common Good City Farm. The farm is based out of Alexandria near Ft. Belvoir, and the Mobile Market is an outreach to traditionally under-served areas around DC. You can read much more about the overall mission and locations/schedules on their site: http://arcadiafood.org/ Some of the produce looked a little wilted (may had spent too much time out in the sun), but a lot of it was undoubtedly fresh. What is not sourced from the Arcadia farm comes from other nearby suppliers. In fact Common Good is one of the suppliers, a hundred feet or so from where it's grown! We didn't have any money with us, but will be back next week to sample their wares.
  24. Ollie's Trolley. There always seemed to be matching t-shirt hordes in and around there when I walked by in the summer.
  25. I'm hopeful. Will it be Little Serow or Thai X-ing? Absolutely not. Could it be Spices or Nooshi? Probably. Both perfectly serviceable for family-friendly pan-Asian with decent sushi. I see nothing wrong with that. Better that than an empty storefront. The rumor of tapas across the street and some wine bar/pub thing in that big storefront on the south corner has me more intrigued, though ....
