  1. There a CB right next to my office building, so I eat here more than i care to admit. Actually, the real reason for that is they sent out an online order code (46) at one time for free soup, and they've never invalidated it, so I get a free soup every time I online order from there. That said, I think their food is actually quite good. I get their panini (which unfortunately ranges in quality level from day to day), the salad trio, chicken pesto sandwich (both always solid and tasty), pesto cavatappi (I'm a sucker for low-quality cheesy sauces, and they don't skimp), and all of their soups are good tho I'd highlight the lemon chicken orzo. Soups come with a small roll and sandwiches come with chips and a pickle. What's disappointing is that they've gotten rid of some quality items (e.g. the meatball panini), and strangely, you can't order their hot toasted subs online (which makes no sense since you can order everything else). Also, check your bag cause they always forget those free sides. Service is pretty terrible, in fact.
  2. FWIW, Pho 88 has re-opened. I got an order for the wife, but she didn't think it was as flavorful as she remembered. it may just be that she had made homemade pho a couple weeks prior, and this restaurant version didn't carry the same intense flavor profile. Or maybe it just wasn't very good. I dunno.
  3. Well, I'm at work right now, but later on tonight? Joe Cocker, RIP
  4. Really? For a train station, it strikes me as a completely reasonable bar. [And I apologize for hijacking this thread with what was meant to be an innocuous comment above about options (not) being limited]
  5. Heavily discounted, and so comparatively inexpensive...I was surprised to see a (nearly) $300 bottle of wine in Giant (sentence could end here, btw) on sale for (nearly) $100 off the full retail price. I meant to note the wine, vintner, etc. but was in a rush.
  6. I was a bit disappointed with my recent meal, if mostly with the service. First the food...I got the steak tartare, as I did on my last visit. They changed the presentation of the dish and it looks amazing: a round mold of tartare in the middle of the plate, indented slightly in the middle with a small egg yolk, all surrounded by strategically placed small leaf sprigs, round potato chips the size of dimes, dollops of anchovy paste (?) ... truly art on a plate. Unfortunately I actually like the old presentation better, because it came with a handful of large chips on which one could place a forkful of tartare, and I prefer to eat it that way (tho I should note there was no drop off in taste of the meat itself). I got the pork belly special for the main dish and it was solid if not spectacular. It was a 2 inch cube, and came with pears and some kind of pasty sauce I don't remember. I wouldn't get it again given the other items on the menu. Now the service...it was not good. We said we wanted to order drinks but asked the waiter to return for drink requests when our two late diners arrived. When they did, he leaned down and whispered (!) something to one of the late arrivals and one of the people that was already there. As most of the table was deep in conversation, we didn't catch the whisper or responses. Two minutes later, drinks arrive for those two, but for whatever reason he didn't take drink orders for the rest of the table (until we ordered our food). Huh? 4 of us ordered the hot apple cider. Sometimes the order was accompanied by small cookies. Sometimes it wasn't. Huh? He also forgot one. When placing their order, one person asked for a side order of brussel sprouts for the table. It came out before the appetizers. Huh? I ordered a side of fries for the table. It never came. Huh? I won't hold it against the place because I've enjoyed many a meal here, but this was one to forget.
  7. We made our first trip over to the new location. The space is clean and open (things you couldn't really say about the old location), if paint-by-numbers design. If you've read any of my other posts, you know I'm a fan of the dank, and this is a decidedly dank-less place. But enough about the atmosphere...the food was very good, as I always thought it was. I detected no dip in service or quality from the previous location. I had the chicken souvlaki, and it was an ample portion, piled with fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, feta, and house sauce (not tzatziki). The wife had the gyro, and it also shared these qualities (but with tzatziki). The boy had a small cheese pizza, which was fine, though my preference would be for them to put less cheese on it next time. Anyway, Anthony's continues to offer very good food (if not the dank).
  8. DoubleDays Grill and Tavern is an old school, no frills, dank-y (http://youtu.be/VZJXqdFeRNA) restaurant located in a chain mall outside of the city down Rte. 48. The place had a wait to get in at noon on a Thursday, and is clearly a real locals joint given how many times I heard the bartender ask "do you want the usual?" I opted for a side house salad with my turkey ruben and the salad was so large I thought they served me the dinner portion by accident. The ruben was solid and workman-like = bread, turkey, russian dressing, slaw. No silly add-ons like lettuce and tomato. The french onion soup was prepared very well (melted and charred cheese), but the broth was lacking in flavor and tasted just ok. The place has a huge menu, and serves pizza as well. I look forward to a return trip.
  9. Pics related to my previous post. Sorry that this has turned into a total cock-up!
  10. This trip seemed a whirlwind to me, and I can hardly remember where we ate. Actually, many places were just random Shwarma and Falafel joints, and I don't think I ever bothered to even look at their names. I do recall a couple places, however: Steakiat Hatzot: We had an excellent meal here, as good as I can recall. We had the Jerusalem mixed grill and an assortment of sides. The mixed grill was delicious and I'd really like to know what assortment of spices they use. The best dish was, surprisingly, the eggplant. It had an almost creamy texture, and a tasty smoky flavor. we were fighting over who got to finish it. Another place was in the First Station complex tho I can;t remember its name (not Adom). Anyway, I had this tasty lamb stew, that had an interesting presentation. Everything else is a blur. Something just came back...It turns out that I'm friends with the head Rabbi at the new Ritz in Herzilya. This is a thing that does not suck; he's a rockstar in that place and it doesn't hurt to dine with rock stars. The things they can do with sauces given they can't mix meat and dairy is amazing. The space is beautiful and looks out over the harbor. The bartender at the rooftop pool makes a refreshing cocktail. Back to the blur...
  11. Actually, that's part of the issue at the McLean location...you order ahead, but you still get stuck in the single long payment line that's used for all customers. They have it set up with 2 registers so that one could handle pick-up orders, while the other handled in-store orders, and they have signage that promotes this system, however (on my visits, at least) they never seem to actually have that system in effect, so everyone feeds into one line and it causes more delays than necessary.
  12. I've now been to the new McLean location several times. Even tho it's just a sandwich and pizza joint, it is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. I've had the Italian sub, cheesesteak, chicken cheesesteak, chicken club, cheese pizza, and Santini fries. They're all solid, and easily best the other local options. Actually, I think their sub rolls are quite good, and they tend to toast them (even for a cold Italian), which is a nice touch. (I just realized I've essentially repeated what I wrote above.) The only bad news is that they haven't quite figured out the proper procedure for ordering, paying, and pick-up (and how call-in orders fit into that system). Given this is a chain, it's rather surprising that all this hasn't ben figured out before in other locations. The place is doing great business, which has been adding to the confusion. So, right now service is a mess, but not enough of a reason not to go (and they'll eventually work it out).
  13. I don't think I've ever had the burger here before, so i gave it a try. It was pretty good, and most importantly, cooked perfectly to order (medium rare). Unfortunately, i burned the roof of my mouth on the very first bite, even tho I had cut the burger in half! Out of the thousands of burgers i've eaten in my life, either fresh off the grill or 3 days old, I don't recall ever having burned my mouth on one. I must say that i was rather annoyed, but what are you gonna do?
  14. FWIW, Pho 88 in Falls Church, which was referenced in the above posts but never got its own thread, has now closed.
  15. FWIW, I greatly appreciated being able to pay my bill thru the automated system at Uno's, and not having to wait for the overburdened waitress (dealing with a seemingly unexpected 20-top), as my 3-yr-old struggled to get out of his seat.
  16. **Bump** Any recent visitors to Israel/Tel Aviv/Jerusalem? I'll be there next month for my 1st visit...
  17. I think their coffee (hot/cold) is underrated, and particularly go for their sugar free vanilla iced coffee, which I'd take over the equivalent Starbucks version any day.
  18. A return trip yielded a very solid take on Fettuccine Alfredo, and a Margherita Pizza that, while a bit soggy in the middle, was quite tasty. I'd give both another try. We went for the fried zucchini again, and they turned out worse than the last time, so that experiment is likely over. I also forgot to mention in my post above the huge piece of bread they give with every order. While it's not the best bread, it is a nice thought.
  19. We had a pretty bad takeout experience from #2 a couple Sundays ago. When I picked up my order around 7, the restaurant was completely empty, and the kitchen was seemingly shut down for the night, even tho they were technically open for another couple hours. All the sauces we just off in terms of texture and taste. Also, the Palak Anar had no pomegranate seeds or any of the yogurt-style sauce (only the tamarind). I believe they used golden raisins in place of the pomegranate seeds. (Oy!) Perhaps they were all at #4...
  20. I've lived in McLean for a little over 3 years now, and I keep forgetting this place exists, even tho I'm a regular visitor to Moby's just next door. Anyway, I finally grabbed a takeout menu, and we gave this place a shot...very pleasantly surprised! The menu notes that the pasta is homemade, and i believe them. We got an order of the Ravioli alls Panna, which came with 6 large raviolis (Maggianos large? No, but certainly large enough and homemade!) in a tasty parmesan and cream sauce. By the taste and texture, I think they're not only homemade, but made that day, too. Anyway, really good. We also got the Pollo Francese, which were 3 bread filets in a lemon-oil sauce. Again, I though the portion ample, moist and tasty. My wife thought it was too lemony, but I didn't agree. It also came with a side of spaghetti (you could get salad instead), which was solid. Not the best red sauce I've ever had, but very serviceable and not an embarrassment either (take note Roccos!). We got an order of Fried Zucchini, and it was huge, but didn't travel very well. I think the food was so hot that it continued to steam in its container, so it wasn't very crispy. It's something that needs to be tried at the restaurant for a real evaluation, tho i'm not rue i'd get it for takeout again (it wasn't that bad). Dare I say that there may be a pretty damn good Italian restaurant in McLean...
  21. We had another very good lunch here the other day, beginning again with the soup and crab puff platter noted in my post above. We also got sandwiches, chicken salad and turkey avocado, and decided to split them. It worth noting that some sandwiches come served on bread baked by the restaurant (in this case, the turkey avocado), and I suggest you seek these out as the bread is quite good and helps make a good sandwich a great sandwich.
  22. I actually found myself at one of their other locations the other day. I got the cheesesteak, and it was solid. Iirc, the bread was quite good. The boy's slice of pizza looked good and he seemed to enjoy it (he's 3, so take that for what you will). I'm looking forward to the opening of the McLean location to give it another go closer to home.
  23. A solid brisket sandwich from the original Katzingers outpost. I didn't pay close attention, but the brisket seemed chopped, or at least broken down into small pieces, so not slabs of brisket meat. Slow cooked, and very tender. Actually, I thought they had mistakenly brought me out a chopped liver sandwich from the way it looked when I first got it. Anyway, it was quite tasty. Add a side of mac salad, bag of chips, and Dr Browns, and my total was around $20, which seemed excessive, particularly given this was no over stuffed deli sandwich (which costs $3 more). Or maybe I'm just being an old crank. Bottomless pickle barrels were a nice touch! The place has the kind of menu that you'd like to work through.
