Walrus Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 I loooove the Mozambique flavor, and if I haven't eaten too much at Los Tios (a rare event!) I like a turtle sundae made with it. Yum.
Juiceguy Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 So I'm planning a return visit...but don't know what to get!! I want the vanilla custard, but there are too many confusing mix-ins and toppings to choose from. Help!
tripewriter Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 So I'm planning a return visit...but don't know what to get!! I want the vanilla custard, but there are too many confusing mix-ins and toppings to choose from. Help! Plain vanilla custard is my favorite, and my benchmark for comparing custard joints. When I want variety at DG, I tend to look to the sorbets. No mix ins required. Have fun exploring!
KOK Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 Disagree entirely about Carls. I had some ice cream (well, I call it ice cream) at Carl's a week or two ago -- it's nice enough if you happen to be in Fredericksburg (like, finally blowing your top on I-95 and bailing) but not at all worth a special trip.I'm wondering if Carl's had made changes in the last couple of years, as like Ilaine, I was there recently (after lunch at Allman's - still great) and while Carl's was good, it wasn't nearly as good as I recall from 2 years ago and many visits before that.I also think Neilson's is the best in the area, and I like Dairy Godmother, but it's not as rich, to me, as Neilson's. Not that I wouldn't be happy to live in proximity to a place 1/2 as good as Dairy Godmother. Thanks, Kevin
bonaire Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 I went on my semi-regular Cheesetique/Poblano/Dairy Godmother swing today. Got some of the homeade marshmallows at Dairy Godmother today -- vanilla flavored (they also had lemon). I hadn't been able to try them before as they said they don't carry them in the summer. Darn those things are good -- square, lightly powdered and light and fluffy. Not nearly as dense as the marshmallows you buy in a bag. I want to try the lemon next time!
Juiceguy Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 Yum! I tried their molasses cookie the last time I was there as well...Amazing flavor and an incredible, chewy texture. This place doesn't do much wrong!
smokey Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Apparently, yesterday was rockweller day at the Dairy Godmother. I'm rarely in that part of the world, so rarely get to go. But, was in Alexandria yesterday so made sure to make a stop at DG. I ended up choosing a custard flavor that is totally not me--New York Cheesecake. It was fantastic. If there was a negative, it was that I couldn't resist gussying up perfection by making it into a sundae with sour cherries. Individually, both were great. The sum was, unfortunately, equal to less than the whole of the parts. Each were good, but it detracted from them to pair them up. Nonetheless, I managed to choke it down! As KOK said, although there are beter custard places in the world, I would be thrilled to live in proximity to a place half as good as DG.
Jacques Gastreaux Posted October 2, 2006 Author Posted October 2, 2006 You gotta try the marshmallows.
crackers Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Apparently, yesterday was rockweller day at the Dairy Godmother.Yes, I was there too. After an afternoon of blasting shotgun shells into unsuspecting flying orange discs, the vanilla custard with turtle topping (fudge, caramel and toasted pecans) was just perfect yin. Excess, yes. Wretched, no way. I thought about adding sour cherries but resisted, and instead finished up sharing one of those etherial lemon marshmallows.
smokey Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 You gotta try the marshmallows. You know, I have no interest in her marshmallows. I've never much cared for marshmallows. People keep saying home made marshmallows are nothing like the jet puffed things. So finally, I made my own. Maybe it was my recipe, maybe it was my technqiue. But I still thought, <shrug>. The DG's are probably better than mine, but I just don't think I'm a marshmallow person. More for everybody else!
Cook&Bottlewasher Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 The infamous brat night starts tonight at 6pm. Live accordion music,German potato salad, kraut w/ apples, frozen custard and apple crisp! Cooter Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 For the love of God, everyone must go to the Dreamery tonight for their awesome pepita, or pumpkin seed, custard. Unbelievably pumpkiny and delicious. Wish I could describe it better, but I can't. It is just awesome.

There are also cornmeal cookies with pepita that are great too.

The last time we were there (Pecan Pie ) we witnessed the definition of a truly devoted dog owner: a guy coming in at 8:45 p.m. on a cold and windy night solely to purchase a puppy pop.

LaShanta Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 You all will be happy to know that after much confusion and skepticism about the raves of Dairy Godmother (see post #83), I am officially a believer. Every time I am going home to fort Washington from National Airport (which lately has been about once a week) I always, always make a detour to go to the DG. I even keep the calendar in my car so I can prepare to go no matter what day I’m getting off the plane. It has now become the highlight of my work-related traveling. So thank you once again oh great Rockwellians for encouraging me to venture out of my geographic comfort zone and try something fun and new. Because player hatin (creating an unfounded aversion for something purely because it’s popular (I also call it the Thaitanic Phenomenon)) on famous random places in non-frequented locations is totally uncool. And yes Cooter, the pepita was to DIE for!!! Peace & Many Blessings, LaShanta
mktye Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 From the DG's latest email: "There are frozen custard pumpkin pies available as well as the pumpkin sandwiches on the ginger cookies. This used to be more of a fleeting Thanksgiving treat but folks have been clamoring already so we have been providing. It's hard to get tired of pumpkin when it is available such a short time each year." I had some of the pumpkin frozen custard yesterday -- absolutely delicious. Not too spicy and very pumpkin-y. Like the most perfect pumpkin pie you can dream up, yet smoother and creamier.

hillvalley Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 The day after Obama's visit to The Dairy Godmother the line was out the door at 8:00pm. Despite the long line the wait was not bad and all the credit goes to the staff behind the counter. The line moved quickly because they were calm, efficient and friendly at the same time. Don't let the long lines scare you away, the custard is as good as ever. I had chocolate with marshmallow and sprinkles which was the perfect end to a great weekend.

You know, this story just didn't have the media frenzy as President Obama's other restaurant trips - perhaps the novelty of it is wearing thin in the minds of both the national and local press. Still, a presidential restaurant visit will ALWAYS be the top story on this website, because this is what we do, and what we support.

xdcx Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 cream puffs all this week to coincide with the WI state fair. Had one yesterday and they're excellent.
plunk Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 darkstar, I tried the milkshake at Dolcezza. It was very thin but utterly delicious. I kinda wish you hadn't told us about it, though, since it's going to be a continual temptation. Also, the milkshake I had at DG this weekend (Mozambique) was so thick it was barley drinkable, so I guess alot depends on the clerk who's making it. I think but am not sure that I overheard that the pumpkin milkshake will be back the first weekend in October, in time for the Del Ray Art on the Avenue festival. Is the pumpkin milkshake available all the time in the fall, or only when "pumpkin" is the Flavor of the Day?
porcupine Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Is the pumpkin milkshake available all the time in the fall, or only when "pumpkin" is the Flavor of the Day? I could be wrong, but I believe the milkshake is made with a spiced pumpkin mix and vanilla custard, and is available all autumn.
DonRocks Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 I was having a relatively rare hell-bent sweets craving the other evening, and had dinner (yes, dinner) at The Dairy Godmother, which was absolutely packed, with a line inside extending all the way to the end of the zig-zagging dividers, and wrapping around back into the restaurant with the back heading towards the restroom area (mercifully not out the door). It took a good ten minutes to reach the front, but like usual (although it had been awhile, probably over a year), it was worth it. I got a Large Sundae ($4.21, which, with tax, rounds up to an even number) with fresly extracted chocolate-vanilla custard side-by-side, the free almonds topping, my other topping (crushed nuts because I didn't feel like fruit), and no whipped cream even though it was gratis. This was a very small "large," but I thoroughly enjoyed it once I resisted the street temptation to start in on it walking down Mount Vernon and E. Del Ray Avenue. The Dairy Godmother remains as it has always been: a gem, rivaled only inside the beltway by what Frozen Dairy Bar *used* to be. This little sundae, very small for a "large" by today's standards, is enough to keep The Dairy Godmother strongly ranked in Italic in the Del Ray portion of the Dining Guide. "The Mother of Us All" (1947) libretto by Gertrude Stein, music by Virgil Thomson. When I Tweet about a review, I'm going to begin including links so people can retweet and get the word out. In this case, it's here; one day, I'd like to have this done for everyone via a simple icon. There actually *is* a simple way to do it now, using the "less-than"-looking icon on the top-right of where you're reading right now, to the right of the post number (#150 in this case), but it's clumsy, so a straight link like this one is better, and you can simply click on "Retweet." Please do - Liz Davis deserves it, especially after all the hectoring we gave her about her near-name-change to "That Custard Place in Del Ray." I'm *so* glad she didn't name it that, aren't you? Anyway, the link for retweeting, once again, is here. Sharing my posts on social media (Facebook and Twitter) are two ways you can say "thanks" for the work I do here and for keeping this place free, secure, and commercial-free for you. "Liking" the post is a nice gesture, but sharing it on social media is much more powerful (I won't stop you from doing both!) 1
DonRocks Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 27 minutes ago, ktmoomau said: Sad news: Yeah, I've been sitting on this one for a couple of years. Liz and I have talked, and although I don't want to reveal the content of our conversations, the weariness in her writing was palpable. She's just, plain tired. There are a lot of people out there like Liz - look at Julien Shapiro, Edan Macquaid, *me* ... they want to work hard and put out a good product, and the last thing in the world they care about is "being a marketer" with all the sleazy, self-promotion that comes with it. Unfortunately, unless you either do that, or pay someone to do it (and, what do you pay them with?) you're stuck with a "well-respected, but little-known" entity that people mistakenly assume is paying all your bills and bringing in all sorts of notoriety and riches - until one day, when the person responsible for that entity just doesn't want to do it anymore, and then everyone realizes what they've lost. Liz Davis is a Del Ray treasure, and The Dairy Godmother is an artisan icon. Twenty years from now, they'll be all but forgotten except by a select few, and I'll be one of those select few who always holds her in the highest esteem. Although I haven't talked with Liz about this in probably over a year, it isn't hard for me to read between the lines in her letter. She's somewhere on vacation, and finally said "fuck it," and I don't blame her one bit - she has one life to live, and I hope she enjoys it to the max. It would not surprise me one bit if she didn't make the final decision until she was actually out of the country, enjoying herself, and seeing what she could be doing instead of working fourteen-hour days running a custard shop. 7

Josh Radigan Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 heard about it not too long ago from a colleague and said to myself "why wouldn't she get out?' Of course there are lines out the door at certain times of the day of the week, but its not like you are selling $20 cups of custard but custard at a low price to attract people of all sizes. this place will be missed dearly. One of my favorite pictures with my youngest is sitting on the red picnic benches next to stomping grounds in the dead of August eating custard. 2
stevem Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 We were there the day they opened and remained frequent flyers. I even won a "name the flavor" contest very early on. Liz was a great member of the neighborhood. Happy for Liz but incredibly sad.
JimCo Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 She had quietly stopped selling gift certificates a while ago, which makes me think this was in the works (or in her thoughts) for a while. Good for her. Banana Pudding and Salted Caramel were my favorites. Still got a half gallon of Candy Cane in my freezer. Maybe it's now a collectors item? 1
danlow Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Let's remember that Liz's shop, plus her spirit and hard work was the definitive "third" place. That was Liz's stated goal from the beginning. Third places are important to community building, "places where people spend time between home (‘first’ place) and work (‘second’ place). They are locations where we exchange ideas, have a good time, and build relationships." (Brookings Institution) From 2005: "A Rich Concoction of Midwestern Tastes and Values" by Mary Claire Kendall on alextimes.com What an amazing Liz, then, now and always. 4
abigail99 Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 SO sad. My husband and I had a long-standing tradition of hopping in our little vintage convertible in the heat of summer and driving all the way from Chevy Chase MD to the Dreamery/DG (especially on Mozambique day) and then stopping at Gravelly Point on the way home to watch planes land. Those will forever be happy memories. 5

When I say led, I mean as if she was the lead dog pulling a sled. She was obsessed with Liz's special Squirrel treats.  An essential ingredient was discarded beer hops. In the early days, Liz would often take time to come out front to visit with our leader, us too. As you say, forever happy memories. 2

Simul Parikh Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Yah, dogs love spent grain. Hops in fresh or pellet form are gross. I don't know what possessed me to try them.

Does anyone remember when The Dairy Godmother was "The Del Ray Dreamery," but that name was trademarked, so Liz had a contest to change it? And she initially decided on "That Custard Place in Del Ray?" This is the part Liz may or may not remember: I thought that was an awful name, and I wrote Liz an impassioned letter not to do it, basically saying "It's not to late to back out - please don't call it 'That Custard Place in Del Ray.'" She wrote me back and thanked me for my thoughts, and said she now had a lot to think about - a short while later, she came up with "The Dairy Godmother," which I think is a brilliant name. I have no idea whether I was singularly responsible for the change, partially responsible for the change, or not at all responsible for the change, but that's what happened, and I remember writing her back and telling her how much I loved "The Dairy Godmother." (Hence) 2
stevem Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 We didn't love the interim name, and I remember just lighting up when she made the second change. Dairy Godmother was perfect and so reflected the vibe of the place. Still have a couple small gift certs. Dang it!
Josh Radigan Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 I moved into the neighborhood shortly before she opened and remember the confusion with the name. My sons will be so sad come springtime, along with their little league baseball teams, when the doors don't reopen. 1
Josh Radigan Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 The Pop-up was packed as of 9:00am this morning. If you swing by and see a big, goofy guy in glasses working the No1 Pickle station give him a hearty shout out "Hey Chef Will Ham! Josh says get back to work."

Josh Radigan Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Different styles of Pickles from No1 Sons Pickle Company, Smoked Salmon and Bagels from Bagel Rising.

I think I need a second cup of coffee. I don't mean to be dim, but why is this in the Dairy Godmother thread?
Josh Radigan Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 It was a part of the thread from up top. Pras quoted John Kelly's article which mentioned the pop-up. Move as needed. Get that second cup from Emma's, still digging that place. Â

Popular Post Cook&Bottlewasher Posted January 24, 2017 Popular Post Posted January 24, 2017 Oh,Godchildren! Don't worry! There are people who are interested in buying and, while there may be change, The DG will live on. I had a GREAT time.It was my savior in many ways but I have much to do that I wasn't able to squeeze in while I was working so many hours.I will have another, smaller business of some kind....or a few businesses.I have ideas, just not enough time. Thanks for you support and kind words. Liz 17

stevem Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 As sad as we are, we all agree. You will be missed deeply but are entitled to your next adventure. I can only hope you get a cool new Twitter handle soon. (And that your new business is in Falls Church, but I digress....)
stevem Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 Extremely happy to report that it's back open. It's not my place to speak to the business details, but the custard was perfect on Saturday and it was great to see Liz. Â Â 1

DonRocks Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Liz has posted on Facebook that she's finalizing her move to Wisconsin this week. We'll miss you, Liz! 1
stevem Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 Liz is one of the finest humans on earth and was truly a pioneer in Del Ray. She will be missed. And, fortunately, the custard hasn’t missed a beat. 2 1
KeithA Posted April 9, 2019 Posted April 9, 2019 First time on Sunday for an afternoon treat. The weather was nice but still didn't expect the line wrapping to the back. Good news was it moved fast. Me and the kids each got custard which was good and rich similar to Kohr Bros but a little richer and less sweet (I think slightly better). Portions were small but that was ok since it is rich. Chocolate and vanilla were both good. I also got the passion mango sorbet which was very nice and paired well with the chocolate. I like how you get multiple flavors even in a small. The only downside was the m&m topping (only topping any of us had) which were advertised as m&ms but were either stale or carob coated candies or something else. Did not taste right and were thrown away. So stick to the ice cream.Â
