  1. Passage to India--many vegan options clearly marked on the menu.
  2. It looks like everyone was at Palena last night. Here's the soup report. Lentil soup included lobster, andouile and a foie gras emulsion. This was nothing like any lentil soup I've ever had before and with the flavorful sausage it actually ate more like decadent franks and beans. I can't really do it justice. It was outstanding. Mussels and seafood dumplings in lobster broth were great as well. The dumplings were light and flavorful and the broth was flavored with green onion and daikon lending an Asian quality to the dish. Palena is so good and so close to my house I don't know why I go anywhere else. And for the quality of the food eating in the cafe and mixing in courses from the dining room is one of the better deals in town. The icing on the cake was that the butter arrived at spreadable temperature. Huzzah!
  3. Tropicana on Florida Ave/U St. is passable for take out. Good might be a stretch. I don't know of anywhere that does real jerk. (Real jerk, like real bbq, is slow cooked and most of the "jerk" you see at restaurants is just jerk flavored.)
  4. 2 Amy's was serving house made bagels and lox last Saturday. Quite good.
  5. Deschutes!!! Is Deschutes going to be there? A pint of Black Butte would be worth the $85 admission.
  6. I am consistently impressed by and jealous of the meals people are putting together out there. Seriously, where do you folks find the time? For those of you wondering what a person with significantly less time, talent and ambition eats on a Monday night: -Store bought hummus and pita -Leftover turnips -Red leaf lettuce w/ oil and vinegar Then I folded the laundry and went to sleep.
  7. We finally made it to Central last night. Results were mixed. The bread was excellent, perhaps the best I've had in a DC restaurant. The Borgougne Blanc "Michel Richard" was great as well, especially considering the price. I liked the fries, while my better half who prefers a crispier frite did not. We both agreed that the lobster burger was not that exciting. The crispy part was actually kind of leathery and the flavors didn't do much for me. A side of brussels sprouts was not enjoyable--mushy and oily. The faux gras with rilletes was nice, but very heavy and a large portion. I think we could have used a half portion. The highlight of the meal was a special of seafood gumbo. This was a pretty straightforward version with little crispies sprinkled on top. Seafood included crawdads, shrimp and oysters and was perfectly cooked. The crispies added a nice textural contrast. Service was friendly, but kind of mixed up. There was a minor celebrity sighting, some guy from CNN---but no William Shatner.
  8. I am not a fan of their chicken. Their poussin, on the other hand, is un-freaking-real.
  9. They'll be there every other Sunday until March when they'll return to their normal weekly schedule. The guy told me it was because he couldn't get enough people to staff the market every week in the winter.
  10. I've found the cheese counter at their Georgetown/Glover Park location to be a lot better than P Street. The folks working the counter are very friendly and happy to cut pieces to order.
  11. What does this mean? The blood sucking bourgeoisie drink cocktails, but the hard working neighbor folk prefer wine? It's your restaurant, your prerogative, but I am not sure I understand this section of the rant.
  12. I think cooking pizza properly is kind of like cooking steak properly. Different folks have different ideas (although we all know rare to medium rare is ideal ) If by undercooked you mean actually raw, that's another story.
  13. I'm curious to know when you've ordered these pizzas. I almost always go on Sundays and I've had good luck ordering my pizza well done. Could it be that some folks in the kitchen heed the well done request and others ignore it?
  14. The goat didn't excite me as much as the mezze or pasta courses, which is not to say that it wasn't delicious. It was. The other entree options I can remember from Friday night were salt roasted fish and suckling pig. I was wavering between goat and pig. My plus one wanted the goat, so that's what we had.
  15. We dined at Komi last night. The mezze course was quite an experience. I am not going to try to recount all the courses. Highlights for me were a lobster salad with heart of palm and hazelnut and a mini ice cream cone made up of wagyu tartare with some kind of foam on top. The other highlight was my pasta course: tagliatelle with snails, sweetbreads and mushrooms. Service and wines were very good, especially an Austrian varietal whose name I can't remember. I am probably in the minority here, but at the end of the day I don't think the meal justified the check. I have no complaints; everything we had was very good to excellent. Call it heightened expectations. For this type of check I expect an epiphany (aka 'holy shit moment') and although it was a great meal, I didn't really have an epiphany.
  16. I'd call the restaurant before I paid it. If they give you grief you could contest it, assuming you have the time to go down to the court house and all.
  17. I visit BlackSalt almost weekly. It's expensive, but not significantly more expensive than WF. The quality, as others have noted, is top notch. And it's right next door to Bassin's.
  18. What are the consistently awesomer places (aside from Greek Deli)? I work in the area and would like to know if I'm missing something.
  19. I live 2 blocks from Palena and dine in the front room often. I actually like the dark bread, but I totally agree on the butter. I am not sure why they have to serve it rock hard. It may just be a pet peeve of mine, but the cold butter really stands out especially when everything else is so good.
  20. Cucumber-Almond Soup at Palena Soft Shell Panini at 2 Amy's Wood Fired Oysters at Cochon Profiteroles w/ Foie Gras Ice Cream at Le Pigeon (Portland, OR) Grilled Pork Chops and Lamb Steaks at my house.
  21. They have rillettes at Whole Foods. I've never tried them.
