  1. This technique works great with baking bread as well.
  2. How about directions on how to make the faucet run? Two children and one adult were perplexed. Only two had been drinking, so there must be some other explanation. Pepperoni and peppers flatbread was very, very good. The Antipasti Plate could have used more meat. I did like the marinated mushrooms and kalamata olives.
  3. As an alternative, you could treat your wait staff like this.
  4. Some well-deserved good press for a hard working street cart. I have never been for breakfast, but I have visited for lunch twice in the last week. I like their idea of a lunch special - the special is the only item on the menu. Yesterday's cochinita pibil tacos were particularly succulent; the pork being especially tender, moist, and flavorful. They usually post the lunch special on Twitter, which is also accessible from their web page. Friendly folks, too. Ain't nothing wrong with that.
  5. For lunch in that neighborhood, I like Bar Americain. The table seating can get crowded and is probably best with a reservation, but I have wandered in with no reservations during the lunch rush on several occasions and found plenty of seats at the long bar. No dress code as far as I could tell as my jeans, flannel shirt, and Timberlands raised no eyebrows during one visit. The Modern and Cafe 2 at MoMA also get good reviews, although I have been to neither.
  6. This seems the safest course of action. If you must mix it all, freezing appears to be the better alternative to avoid dense and chewy muffins.
  7. No doubt this place is owned by the same folks who run the Gun Club of Goldvein.
  8. I second that emotion. Been there several times. Lunch and dinner. Works well with adults and children. Good call.
  9. The news just made the New York Times website two days ago (November 10, 2009), so it appears to be a fairly recent event.
  10. There is this thread, although it is quite a bit dated. I once attended an event at the Spy Museum catered by Zola that I thought was quite good. They offer a private room for up to 36 people, as well as much larger spaces for receptions.
  11. Try Virgil's. It is only a couple of blocks out of your way. Fun place. Light? Depends on your perspective and what you choose to order.
  12. I perhaps did not express myself clearly, and as I sent this thread careening off topic, I'll give it one more short go and let it rest. I was suggesting that fashioning vegetables into products to look like meat may be offensive to vegans, who have good and valid reasons for not wanting to eat meat. I guess maybe I was wrong. I am off to the store to buy my kids some candy cigarettes.
  13. I'll cop to being somewhat intentionally provocative, but I did intend it as a legitimate question. It seems to me that vegans, more so than vegetarians, have an ethical/moral issue with eating animal derived products. As such, vegetable based meat "recreations" seem somewhat offensive to me in that context. You can add texture and flavorings and not have it resemble a chicken tender. It seems an unnecessary reminder of a practice they disdain. This, spoken from a true omnivore.
  14. Why would vegans want to eat a meat facsimile? If you are opposed to eating your pets, would you want a sandwich with imitation dog meat in it?
  15. Interesting article. I haven't been in years.
  16. OK, I'll bite. What are these "surprises" of which you speak?
  17. Dutch Harbor? Maybe the shipment will be from one of the Deadliest Catch boats. I've grown rather addicted to that show.
  18. Soup. Sweet potato and tomato soup. Butternut squash soup. Tasty. Travels easily in tupperware. Can be frozen for the trip. Reheats easily. Brings some good bread to go with it.
  19. According to its online menu, Masa 14 serves food weekdays until 1am and weekends until 2am.
  20. To the democratic process. It's election day, folks. Don't forget to exercise your civic duty and vote early and often.

    Beef Recalled

Now that I think about it, I believe that everything I know about this topic I learned from this excellent article.

    Beef Recalled

Are not contaminations of this sort more commonly associated with pre-formed burger patties? This looks like loose ground beef was also involved. I haven't been in a TJ's in years, but the sense I get from these links is that their beef is ground in NY and then distributed nationwide. Is this true? I am under the illusion that my local Whole Foods grinds my beef right there in the store. For some reason I have been led to believe that this makes the risk of contamination less than buying the pre-formed stuff. Can anyone disabuse me of these notions?
