  1. Can anyone comment as to if this promotion is still going on? I'd like to grab dinner and a bottle of wine at the bar tonight if the deal is still in place. Thanks.
  2. I was in for lunch today and shared the faux gras with duck rillettes. It was excellent and there's more than enough there to qualify as an entree replacement. That said, it is quite rich and might not be the most waistline-friendly sort of choice.
  3. I gotta respectfully disagree. I stopped in for my first Hellburger early Sunday afternoon and the Fat Joe was pretty much perfect. I'll give you that the burger flavor was probably a little muted, but my taste buds did enjoy the fatty goodness of the foie and the meatiness of the burger. The only drawback from my perspective was the fact that I ate the whole thing in about 8 straight bites in 5min or so, without putting the burger down. I know that's the fastest that I've ever consumed that much foie and probably want to keep it that way. Now if Michael can only start serving some Château d'Yquem...
  4. Looks like Tom is launching a new blog called 'Sietsema's Table' (can't get the link to work now, but it can be found in the middle of this page. Gotta say that as a longtime wp.com discussion reader ( must have been since '99 or '00 when it was called 'Live Online') I'm a little disheartened to see the movement of folks like Tom and Gene W. into the blog-ish sort of writing. The 'Gene Pool' is nearly unreadable, and really make me value all the work that the producers put in to pull out the decent questions/comments. I do hope this new project succeeds, but I'm just not sure that it's for me.
  5. So I happened to be checking an old email account that still gets Daily Candy and came across this little nugget: "Fireworks Viewing What: Catch the fireworks from the rooftop patio at Liaison Capitol Hill Hotel, plus cocktails and free hors d’oeuvres. Why: Boom with a view. When: Fri., 5-11 p.m. (Weather permitting.) Where: 415 New Jersey Ave. NW, at D St. (202-638-1616)." I thought I saw that the Holiday Inn on the Hill had been sold/renamed/whatever and with a little digging around on the interweb came across the news that as of April 1, the new property is called The Liaison. Interesting naming choice aside, according to the Chicago Tribune Chef Art Smith will be heading up the kitchen of a still to be named restaurant. I have not been over to check out the status of the former Senator Sports Grill, but as someone who lives and works in the area, I'm quite interested to see what might be coming out of the kitchen after reading a little about Fifty-two. Any chance someone has been over there recently?
  6. Anyone have an idea where they serve pancakes all day? Specifically in the next 2 hours and preferably in DC. Thanks. -Erik
  7. Good night last night. Got to Cork right at 5pm, first one in the door. Enjoyed the calamari and rock shrimp with a side of the lemony, garlic fries. Washed it all down with a nice white Burgundy, can't remeber the bottle. Friends were very much enjoying a 5 cheese selection, but none for me. Then off to PX for a My Wife's Manhatten, then moved on to the new "Six Weeks and Counting" mmmm so orange-y. Decided to close with an "(Erik's) Irish Flip" cause, well it's my favorite drink there and possibly anywhere. Ended the night at The Majestic. Tried a new Malbec/Merlot blend from NZ, 51% malbec, 49% merlot. Very smooth and went quite well with a couple of the steaks, as well as both of the pasta specials (mushroom and 3 cheese ravioli; tagliatelle with cauliflower and some other good stuff). Added a side of the green beans with bacon and carmelized onions and finished with the Swiss Chocolate ice cream.
  8. Gotta say that I miss the one on Wilson Blvd already. That drive-through was perfect for times when I was in the car and didn't want to see another burger for a while. Now the only one that I know is on S. Cap near the Nats stadium. Looks like I'll be saving trips to The Bell for when I'm out of town (except for when I'm in CA while ironically enough they have much better TB than anywhere else in the country, but I'll only be found chowing down on my double-double animal-style)
  9. Anyone been to the Del Frisco'sin Vegas lately? I'll be there for my brother's bachelor party at the end of next month, and while I suggested a trip to StripSteak or Craftsteak, I've been informed that Del Frisco's is not as over priced as my choices. Any other suggestions for other houses of meat are welcome. (Somehow I see some posts coming that may be a little off topic. Sorry, Rocks)
  10. Came across this today while bumping around on fishbowl dc. Not sure if anyone around here is interested, but stranger things...
  11. The show is America Eats, scheduled to be filming on 3/17 and more info can be found here.
  12. While I'm no Jake or Dave when it comes to numbers around here, I do know a little bit about the good ole football game. If Chef Karoum when 5 for 5, and each attempt was for at least 12.5 yards (clear to me that all 5 qualify), with one of the courses going for a TD (strong possibility for the seared foie gras, but that may be my own personal bias towards foie), and no INTs (also clear), that would give a quarterback rating of 158.3 (perfect performance). I love the internets. Don, please feel free to revise your rating if appropriate. Note: I'm not sure if there's a good comparable football tool out there to calculate Sebastian's pairings, any other football geeks out there care to take a shot?
  13. Not only did those folks drink the last beer in the joint, they also kicked the last bottle of the Cristom Pinot Noir that Don recommended upthread.
  14. I'm there with some frequency, but am the wrong person to talk about the new drinks. Sooner or later I'm convinced that I'll walk in and see "Erik's Irish Flip" listed on the menu. However, lately I've enjoyed tastes of the Smoker's Delight, Clint's Maple, the Champagne Cocktail (I love me some of that mystery gas pump) and of course, My Wife's Manhattan. You really can't go wrong with anything there. A little while ago, Clinton even made a couple of non-alcoholic creations for my favorite designated driver. Perhaps I can encourage plusone to expand on what she was enjoying while I was sucking down the flips. As to the snacks, it's still just the homemade potato chips. I believe if you're renting the whole place out for a private party you can add some birthday cake, cheese and charcuterie. Every time plusone and I are there, I find myself saying, "why don't we just move down here, and then I could be here 3 nights a week." But then after all those flips I'd probably weigh 3 bills and spend all of our disposable income upstairs on drinks and downstairs on fried Snickers bars...
  15. Hey Joe, I'm still looking to track the Vahine Vanille Creme down. Thanks!
  16. I'm planning to be there with plusone. Time is still up in the air, though.
  17. I'd second the Hawk. Was at Cap. Lounge for the Iowa returns and it was my first time back since the smoking ban went into effect. Wow, that natural bar smell is not so good. I must be getting old.
  18. It seems that NV Egley-Ouriet is available at The Vineyard. Could someone enlighten me as to the differences between the Vignes de Vrigny and the Brut Tradition? I'd love to grab some Blanc de Noir, but at $83 it's a bit out of the price range. Also, is there anything else on their Champagne specials list that jumps out as something to not to be missed? I'm planning to swing by tomorrow and pick up a bottle or two of E-O, but am always looking for some good bubbly. Thanks.
  19. Thanks! But seriously, any idea where I can pick up some of this E-O Champagne?
  20. Last week, Eating Out and I checked out the cart when it was parked at the new Cap. Hill spot. Delle (?) asked about when it would be slow around the holidays and we thought this week would be pretty quiet but after the 2nd, things should be picking back up. Perhaps the cart is back downtown this week?
  21. Looks like Cafe 15 is on the way out. I've been meaning to get here for a while during one of the restaurant weeks, so I guess one of my spots for next month is taken. Be interesting to see what takes its place. From an email yesterday evening: "After five wonderful years of serving the community Cafe 15 will be closing its doors on January 20th 2008 just after restaurant week. We have truly appreciated your support and loyal partonage over the years and we wanted you to be the first to know. But fret not, there is still time to come in for one last meal (or more) Check out the exciting menus we have planned for Christmas Eve Christmas Day New Year's Eve In addition we will be pulling out all the stops during restaurant week (Jan 14th - 20th) and showcasing some of our most requested items. Come join us one last time and enjoy everything you have loved about Cafe 15. We look forward to seeing you sometime this coming month."
  22. Hey Michael, Any chance we'll be able to ring in the new year at RTS? Last year was great, and for a good cause to boot. PSA - A solid base of mashed potatoes and Chateaubriand allows for a deceptively large amount of alcohol to be ingested...
  23. Looks like I was missed in the great name roundup. I'm still interested if there is space.
