  1. I stand corrected. According to the teaser on WTOP this morning, we have a 3 star review to look forward to this evening. Any educated guesses?
  2. FWIW I was at Notti for lunch today (taking advantage of the opentable.com bonus points at 1pm) and on the menu posted outside as well as the menu that was presented at the table, there was an indication of which salads apply (incidently, it's all of them except for the tomato salad) for the Lunch on the Run special. Perhaps the menu has been updated to reflect the earlier comments? ETA - their website however, does not make the same distinctions as the hard copy menu. Then again, what they're offering now is a bit different from what's on the web.
  3. Under the better late than never file, I draw your attention to selections 534 and 535 on page 3 of Pangaea's wine list. I defer to Mr. Rockwell and Mr. Slater to determine if this in fact constitutes some sort of "bargain" that escapes my pedestrain palate. I was here between Christmas and New Year's last year and this stuck with me long enough to track down the list and share with the class. Other than a very tasty seared foie gras app., I can't remember what we ordered, but the lasting impression was that it was very good, but quite pricey. BTW, we went with a half bottle of the Archery Summit Pinot Noir Premier Cuvée, Oregon 2000.
  4. And Tom weighs in **1/2. Seems tough to get that 3rd star these days. Mehtinks DR.com will be an interesting read when RTC gets its treatment. [edited for grammar]
  5. That concurs with what I was told while spending a lovely evening at the bar last Saturday. Also, the PX is set to go live on Wednesday.
  6. For dinner, don't miss The Helmand, only about 5 min. drive from the inner harbor, straight up Charles Street. The food is reasonably priced, with good size portions and incredibly tasty. Don't miss the kaddo borawni (baby pumpkin) and the Bowlani (leeks and potatoes in pastry) from appetizer menu and I'm partial to the lamb kabob or the beef tenderloin. Also said to have excellent Turkish coffee. This place was in heavy rotation for the 4 years I was living in Baltimore.
  7. Staying at the Hilton next to Point State Park and the convention center. Price point is flexible, fine with a higher priced place for Friday pm, just would prefer it to be reasonably close to the Hilton and able to seat us around 10pm. As far as food, I'm probably thinking modern American (does anyone use that anymore?) something like Firefly or Circle Bistro would be ideal, but it may be asking for too much.
  8. Anyone have any recommendations for the city of 3 rivers? I'm headed to a wedding this weekend and have a late Friday dinner (won't be in town until 9-ish), breakfast/lunch on Saturday and brunch on Sunday to fill. On opentable Trilogy looked kinda interesting until I saw the website. This post may later need to be cross listed so it can take the cake as Worst. Website. Ever. Thanks.
  9. It's nobody's business but the Turks.
  10. Except that it isn't a sacred cow and the reason I walked out had nothing to do with the food. The service was abusive before we ordered so we got up and I've never gone back. At this point the exact wording of the exchange is a little fuzzy (like I said, nearly a year ago) but the sentiment was damn clear. After a few months to let it go, I thought about going back (perhaps I caught them on a very off day) but recent comments only confirmed my experience. So that settles that. So what I'm taking away from this is that I should have posted at the time. I feel the need to learn to write better (lessons from Nadya perhaps?) as I don't want to come off as one of those people from the other boards where "everything sux" (or ruuuules).
  11. I too would like to hear the answer here. I had an experience last year somewhat close to what happened to Dean, but didn't post because most of the other posts about it was pretty positive. I made the decision that I would not patronize this place again, but everyone else can make up their own mind. A little while back the service/management issue was raised by a couple of folks and I felt validated but still opted to not pile on since my one experience was nearly a year ago. Discuss.
  12. So I'm fine, but my basement is a disaster and my budding cellar sustained a wee bit of damage. Here's a question that someone might (hopefully not too many of you) be able to help out with. I had only about a dozen bottles low the low racks when the waters came in. 2 of them are irreplaceable, 2 probably are cost prohibitive to replacing (wedding gift) and the rest good but definately not the end of the world. Basically, is there any way to know, before opening them, if they're toast? From what I can tell, none were fully submerged, all had foil over the cork (I doubt that that matters much) and the water didn't rise all the way above the top of the cork. I don't know how long the water was there, anywhere up to 24 hours, but my guess/hope is closer to 3-4. So winos, thoughts? Much thanks. ETA, damn I seem to love me some parenthesis
  13. After a fantastic birthday dinner last night, what can I say about Komi that hasn’t been said before? OK, Komi rocks. I mean rocks! How much does it rock? It rocks like lego blocks, bagels and lox, antique clocks, appreciated stocks, Roberto’s cigar box, short skirts with knee high socks, Hendrix jamming about a ladylike fox, Combs of cocks on boudin blancs (Palena shout-out), and reading Nadya’s food porn while silently toasting, “To Rocks!”
  14. When did you pick up that Bearboat? I just called over there and they were cleaned out . According to the guy on the phone all of NoVa is out of Bearboat due to an issue with a regional distributor? I may have misheard that, but does anyone have a lead on where I might be able to score some?
  15. For you opentable.com using establishments, a point of clarification. Is the .25 fee in addition to or in lieu of the $1 per seated cover made via opentable? Basically, is it to your advantage ( i.e. cheaper for you) for me to make my reservations via your webiste link or directly through opentable? Thanks.
  16. Chuck Norris's triple spacing self was seen enjoying a late lunch today at Charlie Palmer. Our party happened to leave just about the same time as his and as we walked out the front door, Nash himself held the door for us. I stifled the urge to ask if he's really never paid taxes.
  17. Very sad to see this go. I was just thinking it's time to make the reservation for our anniversary dinner next month. With our rehearsal dinner held at Nectar and first anniversary last year at Aster, I'm now soliciting recommendations for where we should go, and thereby have them close sometime in the next 5-10 months.
  18. Nice to find a fellow traveller. I'm particular to using a knife to a) avoid peanutbutter knuckles and b ) maintain the pretense that I'm still going to go back to the kitchen for something to apply the peanut butter to. Peanut butter and Ritz crackers has served as dinner more often than I'd ever care to admit in polite company.
  19. I'll be there around 6ish. Be nice, I don't remember any names or faces from the Ray's dinner.
  20. So, as a new occupant of the Hall of States, I just received a call from a friend who asked if I had heard the great local dining news. According to his "sources" La Colline will be shutting down sometime next week and replacing it will be..... Johnny's Half Shell This may also may explain the LA Times article last week about business being down. While I am happy for a new dining destination, I also have my doubts that it's another JHS, but what do I know. Anyone able to verify either way?
  21. Living here for six years, I should already know the answer to this but, can one bring home an unfinished bottle (provided it's re-sealed and bagged) if dining in DC or MD?
  22. We've decided to take a last minute trip north. Anyone have some reccomendations for dining in Manchester, Bennington, or nearby? Much Thanks
